** This video is intended for educational & entertainment purposes only. **
The 21ft rule states that in close quarters combat a knife is more effective than a gun. That a knife wielding attacker needs only to enter a 21ft radial distance to conquer the gun fighter.
In this revolutionary exploration of the theory we pit one the of world's elite gun fighters, Instructor Zero from the Spartan Academy in Italy, against the best knife fighter we could find, Doug Marcaida, an edged impact weapons specialist who trains some of the world's most elite fighting units.
What we found in this first round of exploration is that a skilled gun fighter actually has tools within himself to cut that distance by more than half! In coming episodes, Doug will increase the difficulty of attack using concealment tactics, distractions, and advanced movements to see if he can EXTEND the 21ft rule. Stay tuned and please subscribe so you do not miss a single episode!!

Possible scenarios: 1)Knife from concealment and gun from concealment at arm reach or just over arms reach apart. 2)Same as last only exposed holster (think officer having conversation with civi and he pulls a knife). Also, I know you're trying to keep it elite vs. elite, but very seldom is that the way it works out real world. If you could incorporate small groups into the equation it would be quite interesting. Say maybe 3 guys (1 or more concealing a knife) confronting Zero. Or something along these lines. Great series, glad you guys are keeping it going!

I would like to see a scenario of a crowded area, where the guy with the gun needs to defend from a knife attacker(or just a sharp object), but he has no idea how the attacker looks like(think about a police officer in a bad neighborhood)

Thanks for this video! I've shown this to my fellow practical shooters who've never known about the 21-ft. rule. In our country a lot of gun owners lack proper training & some are too confident having a gun for self-defense.

when somebody charges me from behind with a knife i just fart as hard as i possibly can, due to my potent diet solely comprised of refried beans, kimchi, corned beef and pbr the attacker always stops dead in his tracks. yes, sometimes i shart myself and i have to throw my boxers away, but its a small price to pay when my life is on the line.

This series is great. 99% of the population have absolutely NO idea of how dangerous a guy with a knife can be. A cop in Toronto shot a crazed kid with a knife who was on a street car & the public want to lynch him. No rolling to the side for him if he were on that car confronting the guy with the knife. Keep up the good work.

I fucking knew it! I said as much on the first vid, a dive roll can change the circumstance completely, because as they showed, it completely changes your location and level very very quickly, and even marcaida couldn't react fast enough to re-engage. Doesn't have to be a dive roll, either, just anything that changes positions quickly, and the attacker, whether with a gun or a knife, will have a difficult time re-engaging effectively. Thanks for these vids, guys, and I'm glad the series will be continuing.

However, I'd like for Doug to have gone all out. It felt as (in the dive roll bit) he just kinda stopped sloppy and didn't go for Zero rolling, but it's hard to tell from the video.

Daumier would kinda be cheating tho imo if he was expecting the roll he could time perfectly to stab him in the back during the roll. but being that he supposedly doesn't know what to expect there is no way he would react in time,

I enjoyed how you expanded on the concept, but I would like to see if Zero can explore easier maneuvers to avoid being stabbed. These movements seem to be the most effective way to deal with the situation, but they're difficult to learn and unrealistic for people with disabilities such as *****. Funker Tactical - Gun & Gear Videos you guys did a great job opening what seems like an entire new mix of gun fighting and martial arts. I would love for Zero to explain how this can be used by the average concealed carry holder. Thanks again for the great videos!

Get off the X. Human eyes are good at tracking horizontal and vertical movement but aren't good at tracking diagonal movement. Another way is to use distraction ie. throwing everyday objects at the attacker's face then presenting the firearm while moving diagonally or sideways.

Possible Scenarios: 1- Gun man protecting someone else (like his wife or a v.i.p) from the atacker. 2- Drawing pistol inside a car (like was done with karambit, i loved that btw). I wondering if is better have a gun holstered or keeping it hanging on the seat or somewhere of a car. 3- Drawing pistol on a motorcycle. 4- Knife guy reactin a frisk situation. Swiss knifes was a trouble to a cop shaking somebody down, it would be interesting see how Zero deal with this. 5- sitting across a table This channel rocks, keep the good work and forgive my bad english LoL

Ya I don't know what Doug was thinking. He moved slowly and in a straight line. Holly crap man adjust to the left and hit him as he rolls. In Kali you would adjust as he moves or use a fake with a redirect. This is just what happens in Kali. Why wasn't it shown? I am a knife and a gun guy equally so I am indifferent, but I want Kali represented, and I know Doug can bring it. But this wan't it.

I love it. I teach Taijutsu/Ninjutsu and some of our Muto Dori (Unarmed against sword) has different rolls and leaps to escape but roll and/or leap back in to disarm. We also use gun tactics such as those plus how to use Kamae (Stances) to scan areas with quick no stepping movements and so on. Dive rolls for/with weapons plus the traditional knife fighting/disarming and gun fighting/disarming. Very fun stuff. Awesome video.

Pure awesomeness, I'm looking forward to the next episode! My suggestion: it would be interesting to see, how knife throwing would work out. When zero switch levels, it seems posdible to throw the knife in his direction. It's a risk to lose your weapon, but in a life-/dead situation, everything needs to be considered. Keep the good stuff going guys! Greetings from a fan from the Netherlands!

Excellent series. We do not always have the luxury of an attacker with an edged weapon being 21 feet or further away when we initially identify him as a threat. And, not everyone can draw and get off the X fast enough to avoid being stabbed even when the attacker starts at 21 feet. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT! Alternative means of survival, like this, need to be explored and taught.

Thank you for showing this informative video. I get sick and tired of people thinking a knife can be stopped by using a gun. You prove that there is a lot of dynamics involved in attacking your opponent with a knife. It seems you have to do more training using a gun due to the level of safety since the gun trigger can be pressed accidentally.

Although I never anticipate being in a situation where I'm facing a guy with a knife, you never know. This video series opened up a new perspective on how to increase time from "the 21 foot rule". I'm 66 years old and it is doubtful that I would have the reflexes to draw my IWB weapon and defend myself within 1.5 seconds. I'm going to need to dodge and duck first!

I know this video is old and it is awesome to watch these two together. Only thing I would make a comment on is at 2:12 when Instructor Zero falls back and smacks the back of his hand on the mat. With gloves or kit this might not be an issue but if on concrete with bare hands (most concealed carry situations) it would be a good idea to do arms out turn palms down. If you have ever smack the back of your hands on a hard surface from a fall like that you will never want to do it again. Can also impair hand mobility from the impact. BJJ and Judo I was always taught palms down. Just my two cents for what its worth:). awesome video series!!

It is actually his real life nickname. Numeric designations for joining a group, club or membership is not uncommon. He is "0" because he was the founder. Yes, %100 agree. I have been in this position as a pizza delivery driver back in the early 2000s. I ended up in a 'Mexican standoff' when 2 wouldbe robbers entered the first floor landing of an apartment building while I was on the second landing. I was knocking on the door of the customer when they entered and demanded money. They had a gun, and robber 1 (with the gun), said 'gimme your money'. I was familiar with the building, and had construction experience. I knew the steps were concrete. So I retreated around the corner, using the landing switchback as cover. I said 'no' and started banging on the customer's door like I was trying to raise the dead. This went on for a minute or so, and the customer appeared to maybe not be home, or asleep-so I started banging on every door I could reach without giving up my position of cover (4 apartments per landing, I really only had 2 doors to choose from without giving up my advantage). Robber 2 was actually getting discouraged, and told robber 1 let's just leave and go get somebody else. I had predetermined in my mind, that if they came up the stairs I was going into full-on fight mode (6' 225lb ex-Marine) I contemplated many scenarios, mostly drop kicking or diving down the steps onto them to engage hand to hand. But things continued with them being undecided, and me pounding on doors. Finally the neighbor (not the customer) opened up to demand what all the noise was about. He let me in and called 911. Using his peephole, he observed them fleeing the scene. We both sheltered in his apartment, laying on the floor in case they came back and opened fire, until the police came. Just for the record, I'm a white dude, and the neighbor was a black dude-in this era of 'defund the police', I feel obligated to say, that black man just may have saved my life that day. What happened to 'can't we all just get along?'

I myself am a knife fighter I've studied seven different forms of knife fighting and i have been a practitioner for a little over 14 years and i see many flaws in the gun fighters techniques cause it shows the knife fighter as an average Joe schmo, my point is even though you're skilled with a gun or skilled with a knife don't ever underestimate anyone. Because skill can create arrogance and arrogance can get you killed.

This is also a good example of a gun fighter who is gun focused. His response is "go for my gun, go for my gun, go for my gun." I'm not saying it's good or bad, but there are other options, maybe better, maybe not. And I would like to see what happens of the knife guy pursues and attacks with relentless murderous intent. Chases the gun guy if he changes direction, crashes him if he goes to ground. Good stuff, great videos.

May I suggest that next time these two meets, perhaps place them in situations where both have and dont have any advantages. For instance, zero is house clearing and doug is somewhere inside waiting to strike. Or both go to the corner store and one of them rob the place while the other have to stop him. Or in an alley... Pit them in realistic scenario both with objectives to achieve. Thats what I mean.

I think it would be good to test situations where Doug tries to sneak up on Zero. The whole 21 foot rule I think still applies in cases where the gunman is surprised and (like law enforcement) trained to respond and draw their weapons in a specific manner. In any case, props to both men for their exploration of this important topic. Also, cherishing the couple years I was able to train with Doug in the 90's! Long time ago, but glad to see him move to bigger and better things.

I do like the discussion and honesty this series brings. one thing that seems to be forgotten with the invented 21 foot rule is that you can fire your weapon with one hand while controlling a knife temporarily with the other (you will probably still get cut but hopefully not fatally). knife needs momentum and precision whereas gun only needs precision.

One other observation is the the relative skill level requirements are much different. The knife wielder doesn't have to be a high level expert to pull off what he's trying whereas the person with the gun (at close range) would have to be a relatively higher level. Of course, the further the distance, the lower the skill level required for the gunman.

Stealth [aka hiding] or ambush is one way to point out that a knife attacker have the advantage. Rarely you see a person would pull out a knife several feet away to strike. We have to think also that a "knife" is meant for concealment for the expert and not to be shown. Thanks for the video.

Idk if it's been addressed or not (and I may be wrong) but it seems that it's centered around defending against knife, if you have a gun. How about defending against a gun, if all you had is a knife. Example: Conceal carry (gun) is prohibited on the property where you are so you have a knife and a bad guy with a gun tries to rob or kill you. I like how it is now because I carry concealed (gun), but I think it would be beneficial both ways. Awesome videos and amazing people that you all have on all the subjects btw. Love it!

How about throwing knives, spikes, etc. How do you respond when your back is turned to that?

The 7-meter rule (and "back in the day" I showed law officers it could be over 10 meters because of dive-rolling) was the product of an era where lawmen were generally counting on the symbolic intimidation factor of having a firearm theoretically available to keep people from charging them, which is a horrible misnomer. In the last quarter century, smart officers have learned about grappling, distancing, and smothering techniques, so this whole thing should be a bit of a dinosaur. Still, it is important for each generation of guardians to recognize and train in these principles. If you want to go home to your families after each shift, you should pay attention to what is described in this series, and take extra classes in CQC & martial arts. Also, do look at the "Uncut" version of this workout to see several valuable analyses and admissions worked out. Also, just realize that if someone with even moderate training with a blade is going to come after you, there will be stitches. This is the minimal risk you take, so thank you for your service! Hopefully, there may be trained/geared citizens who will back you up in the moment, because this is also supposed to be part of the pact. Many developed nations have forgotten the value of "the militia" and "civil defense," and this puts our honored officers at undue risk in many emergency scenarios.

What?! You travelled all the way to canada, and that is the only footage? I thought you guys are goung to do ahell lot of different videos, maybe a bit longer. Anyway, I'm waiting for everything from these guys. No matter what they do, you can just learn from it. By the way, GN, please make Ryan do a first-aid / combat medic role series! That would be superb! Keep it up!

Thanks for the info i will most definetly incorporate the movement aspect into my own personal training, and that backward shooting that can be a lifesaver most people would try to turn toward the agressor and by then it may be to late

Suggestion: Place no shoot, innocents randomly around the room to see how this effects Zero’s movement and his ability to successfully put rounds on Doug.
