The part that makes me respect Zero so much is the fact that he actually states " under stress, a stupid, common movement could become very hard". Gives him the credibility he deserves because he acknowledges that even with a metric F-ton of training, in a hairy situation it can be very challenging to keep all of that stuff together.

That's referred to as, "mid-brain response", where under stress fine motor skills are lost and the frontal lobe (which controls those skills and reason) shuts down, emphasizing why training is so valuable.

Funker Tactical - Gun & Gear Videos The only thing that looks as good on the range as it does in a real situation is me, because I'm sexy as hell. Seriously though good training, good information, good instruction, and very realistic application. I have taught marksmanship and CQB for years in the Marines, and if I've learned one thing it is that every situation is different and no solution fits every situation. Your material is presented in a very fundamental, explanation based way that says "Look this part works for this, now find a way to use it in other applications. Thank you for putting this information up for key board comandos like me.

Great point made. As an 8532, providing technical application to my Marines come clearly out of a book. However, personal and battlefield experience is where you make your money. I always understood the reason for lateral checks but didn't agree with such. Instructor Zero clearly defined and presented a more realistic alternative.

What makes him such a great instructor is all summed up by the quote at the end of the video "Every option needs to have a logical application on the base of YOUR experience...not mine" -zero That is the sign of an instructor that recognizes no matter how much you know, you never know it all and accept you cannot train for every variable no matter how hard you try. Keep up the great vids Zero

I took Tactical Response Fighting Pistol in January. We did muzzle-up 360 degree scans, but I found that I wasn't really paying attention when I was doing it. As the class went on, I tried to focus more on the 2nd line behind me. It didn't sink in until I got home and started dry practicing it, where there wasn't anyone behind me. I started mentally noting objects behind me, just to pay attention. From there, I went to a public exercise that's helped immensely. When I'm out and about now, I try and take note of what people are wearing and identifying 1 piece of cover/concealment and 1 additional exit. As taught, scans should involve 3 things: Bad guys, good guys and somewhere to go. What you scan is as important as how you scan. You can't do it with a head shake at the range. Good video!

By "muzzle-up" you're not talking about that silly movie thing where they point the muzzle straight up toward the sky are you?

jerreece I don't know about the "silly movie thing", but yes the muzzle was straight up. "Temple index" (everyone I know just calls it "up") =\= "Charlies Angels".

Aka "high alert" position, it can be useful is some situations, such as working in the aft position behind a partnet, but definitely not a "silly movie thing". However, I was always taught to never allow my opponent the luxury of a moment where he doesnt feel the pressure of my muzzle on him, even if he's down. My scans are conducted accordingly, even if I have to collapse into more of a chest-ready position to do it, kind of like what he does in the video. Just my two cents...

Great info. We train to scan for 2 reasons. To break tunnel vision and to identify additional threats front back side to side and back on the threat you just shot because he might still be alive. I'm glad to see zero mention that shooters should be looking for cover even though we rarely train to do so on the range. There are so many haters out there who see someone practicing these life saving tactics and all these haters do is ridicule and be negative. Hey that's the internet though right? Lol

please enlighten me on the 'who' in your "we train to scan for 2 reasons". i would love to know because I, MYSELF, was formally trained by the US Army and scanning behind you to check if any combatants are still alive is bullshit! In a mobile squad moving through urban combat areas, watching our 6 is someone other than the guy leading point's job. obviously you only mean when you are shooting on a range where paper doesn't fire back. this lone wolf shit you fools speak of is complete hogwash. in a firefight; that rambo shit is going to get you killed dipshit.
@wesjones6370
@wesjones6370 7 жыл бұрын
CirusDaVirus3 I've trained with the US Army Airborne and Marines. In both cases, they scanned their surroundings the same as we did, which includes checking your six. If the guys behind you are dead, how can they watch your tail? Situational awareness means knowing your entire surroundings. Scanning and breathing is done once your engaged targets are neutralized, not just a couple rounds fired at them like paper targets. That being said, I do agree, these lone wolf internet experts have no idea what they are talking about. Even SOF operators act in teams, and often with even more appreciation for their squad mates than anyone thinks.

@mr sir Incorrect. He is adamant about doing things based on YOUR experience. A soldier who thinks his six is covered when that person is actually down will get shot from behind. I would wait until I was behind you before I fired. He mentioned three things on when the scan will be done and when to modify. WATCH and LISTEN before you spout off. You could have been in a hundred violent encounters and NONE of that may be useful to any one else because you were LUCKY! You ever hear of an ambush?

Everything is situational. In a training line you should avoid sweeping the other students and instructors with the muzzle of your firearm. People tend to be offended when you point your gun at them. Go figure. Hence the muzzle up method used in most group training scenarios is really about the safety of those around you and avoiding making them angry by sweeping them with your muzzle. In a real world situation, I must trust you have my back and you must trust I have yours so better for us to muzzle sweep each other than to lose the precious milliseconds getting our guns to the horizontal where they can be brought to bear on a threat. But statistically, the odds are probably greater an individual would incur an training accident than an actual gun fight. So training safely should be given the highest priority. Perhaps trainers should add an exercise where blue plastic guns are used instead of real firearms so that the method Instructor Zero is describing can be practiced safety because it definitely has many advantages in the real world than muzzle up scans. As to how the military does things... in any real world chaotic scenario from EMP power outage to to civil unrest and riots, expect all variety of skill levels of other good people to be around you will need to work with. Then factor in they are probably hungry, thirsty, sleep deprived as well as being emotionally distraught, mind numb and not thinking clearly or able to move efficiently. Even those with prior military training will not be functioning anywhere near military expectations. Now those precious milliseconds of delays turn into seconds of delay when there are only two possible outcomes: the quick, and the dead.

You mean from start to finish? Just because his finger wasn't on the trigger doesn't make it acceptable. From training to combat, still not acceptable. Let's hope in combat it's very accidental. Let's hope in training that it's a never thing. I'm hoping that's just a training aid and not a real gun. Or that the angle of the camera was direct while the students were indirect. I highly doubt he would flag his students. I highly hope he wouldn't even if it's unloaded and clear. That's a big rule. And for the guy above who said "how's he gonna show them etc" that's a pretty ignorant statement. I hope you were being sarcastic.

Good points made in the video. I practice, after drawing--checking right, left, and deep six. I believe it is still helpful to get in that habit of checking your surroundings--it helps, somewhat, to avoid tunnel vision, as when your eyes are locked on the front threat that you have neutralized. But it would be good, also, if one practices more movement towards cover--like Instructor Zero demonstrated. Very helpful video.

azntactical and that's why so many people in your country suck at handling firearms. In weapons training in the military, you always cleared your firearm before picking it up, then for inspection so the instructor knew they were clear. Even still, there is a safe direction for pointing your weapon, and no one other than the instructor walks in front of them, and he only does if necessary. Proper demonstrations are done from both sides, so that the trainees can see both angles. There is no need to point a firearm at students.

When I attended weapons training where the instructor need to point the weapon towards the students for teaching purposes, a cleaning rod was run through the broken open M16 and the well was checked prior to proceeding. Done once with the weapon never leaving the hands of the instructor.

@@iamrobert100 no excuse. Even if cleared treat every weapon as if its loaded. If I had a instructor pointing a unloaded I'd get nervous about it. Growing up with a father as an instructor...creature of habit.

I respect the fact that not all techniques work in all situations. But, to have options in the Rolodex is a good thing. Practical application doesn't always work on a square range (where most training takes place for most folks) with other participants on the line.

One of the best drills/practices. "When people are panicked. They are dangerous." Every option/(action=for me) needs to find a logical application. I have heard that before and it goes with everything in life. That includes: Even if they are an unarmed civilian, trying to be a hero, they are trying to stop the wrong guy, like Zero. Rhyme intended.

He's such a bad ass that he doesn't even have elbows, he has hellbows. This dude is awesome. I enjoy learning from him and using his techniques on the range, but sometimes confusing youtube by watching his videos with subtitles just to watch what the computer thinks he is saying is just as awesome.

It's called the "whirl" as to that spin move. That's learned at A.I.T, but it's awesome to see more extensions of its application to real life scenarios.

Because you think it's funny, I'll stick with the "whir" or the whirl. You might even think basketball or football spin move is funny, so I'll add that as well. In any case it's very basic pivoting laughing person.

agree with this, quite logical. Also proper scanning provide information about eny,concealment and obstacles. Last in urban are, you can simply fall and get injuries or worse.

I have seen a lot of flak thrown around about the way Zero does his scans. I think this is a great explanation of the why behind his actions. I think that even more clarity could be offered through the context of PSD where controlling a subject will need to be accomplished before, during and after contact. Using elbows is a great way to maintain the physical aspect of communication too. Where a situation may be loud, and demand that you keep eyes on a threat, using your elbows like that would be a good way to confirm your team's/subject presence.

Thanks for explaining the rest of it. I always assumed that you were doing that kind of rear clearance to compensate for the limits of your field of view that can change with the gear you are wearing. I.e. tactical helmet, shooting glasses or goggles, tact vests etc. Thank you for taking the time to explain. God bless!

Scanning, footwork, weapon down range direction must be instinctively co-ordinated with nimble light but firm hold of ground in offense/defense immediate/direct action; tracking your shoot (foe) / no shoot (friend) trajectories of your bullet & the back stop of the round for urban encounters particularly.
