I met Shane a couple of times in the early 2000s. He was a Gentleman. A little story : I met him in Killarney, Ireland and was chatting with him. My daughters who were kids at the time came in and Shane's first response was to take money out of his suit jacket and demand "Buy the children a drink. Love Shane. R.I.P.

That's lovely and so typical of Shane as I knew him. I spent time with him when he was working (gigs etc.) and "off duty". He was typically polite and kind to most people. In my experience, he was especially well behaved around kids and the elderly. For instance, he'd be careful not to use "bad language".

I have. met him at a gig they played in north London many years ago. Had a chat and a beer with him. He was not wasted, just tipsy. Thought he was quite clever, very humble, very sensitive, extremely easy to talk to,, it was like talking to a friend, funny and really kind. His sensitivity transpired when talking to him in person. He was nice enough to come along to give my boyfriend at the time, who was a big fan, a surprise. That's over 30 years ago. We were young. Thought he was a top bloke and he even sang me a song when he went back on stage. It's a wonderful memory! He was an excellent human being too! Rest easy Snane!!! 😢

One of the best things and saddest things to happen to music best because he gave us songs that will last forever and saddest coz it only lasted 5 years really of genius songwriting and singing. Once he became dependent he lost his mojo and the drink n drugs stop working they will never work again and he just accepted being an addict and never git his inspiration back but he still done enough in those few years to make him live well forever but i don't like it when people romanticise the drinking and drugs as he himself wanted to stop but people dont realise he had mentally health along with addiction like most abd was on doctors drugs. Ive looked and been like him in the past during my worst times that my nickname was his name so fir him to still go on tour feeling sick, anxious, hheartburn, depressed, diarrhea, vomiting, tired, weak, no food, not wanting to be seen, feeling ugly, shows hhe is a hero and he is a hero to me as he doesn't seem like he would want to hurt a fly, just wish could of sern what he would of achieved without addiction and people cant say it helped him as he did all his best work when not full blown addict, it can help at first but not for long. Wish we had more interviews like this as Shane was in the top level of intelligence in England why he got a scholarship. RIP SHANE MACGOWAN O HOOLIGAN

Ah but so much chaos is hard to put up with. Like when they were supposed to be flying to the States to support Bob Dylan and Shane couldn’t make it coz he’d taken too much acid. I love Shane’s work- a true original- I’ve met him and he was a gent. But any band would find it difficult to function with him. Anyway may he rest in peace the legend.

Nooo I don’t think he looked annoyed, it’s just his genuine and honest demeanour that makes him seem like that I think, (not sure if you get what I’m trying to say) Like he only smiles when he feels like it and his replies are strait down the line and contain no body language to make people like him as he dosnt care) but I know he hates confrontation and he is extremely generous and empathetic

@liam.4454 Shane was going to do what Shane was going to do, despite any people pleasers or anyone trying to do some sort of intervention on him. He was not about that. He believed in casting no judgements on how anyone decided to live their personal lives & was so graciously charitable to others who had less than him, which he wasn't super flush with money most of the time. Anyway, many artists, unfortunately for us, but maybe not them, go down the road of substance usage that to us would be over the top. But no one would change Shane's mind about the drink or the drugs... Only he, himself, would ever make that decision. But he often spoke up & recommended that people not do what he did, though I believe he thought the drink was pretty ok, esp for an Irishman.
