I just love What's Up Doc, and especially this scene with the late John HIllerman.

John Hillerman's talent is almost mysterious. To be so stoic, so expressionless and yet so drop dead hilarious is unmatchable by any talent today.

This is one of the most criminally underrated and overlooked movies of all time. Can you believe "Whats Up Doc?" did not receive a single Oscar nomination - if nothing else Madeline Kahn should not only have been nominated for, but won Best Supporting Actress for her role in this film over Tatum O'Neil, instead of being nominated for her role in 'Paper Moon"
@jennifersman79904 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of this had to do with Peter Bogdanovich. A lot of the film community was jealous of his instant success with Last Picture Show and he was quickly becoming a Diva. There was a lot of competition that year with The Godfather, Cabaret & French Connection so it got lost in the shuffle. There was probably a lot of resentment of Streisand too
@markschildberg16674 жыл бұрын
Buck Henry did receive a special award for his screenplay. I’m not sure if it was from the Academy or the Writers Guild.
@inwalters4 жыл бұрын
@@markschildberg1667 Had to look it up - Buck Henry's ward was from the Writer's guild. Madeline Kahn was nominated for Best Newcomer at the Golden Globes, but still not one Oscar nomination. Sort of like "Sweet Land" the 2005 indie film that should have, but got zero Oscar nominations

One of my favorite scenes from the movie. "We would appreciate it if you would check out. When? Yesterday. That soon?" I always wondered if someone saw this scene and thought of casting Hillerman in the role of Higgins in Magnum PI. Funniest John Hillerman moment from What's Up Doc? Actually it was his only scene but very funny.
@jennifersman79904 жыл бұрын
Even before Magnum he specialized in roles like this, he was originally from Texas and played a Sheriff in Paper Moon, a water department bureaucrat in Chinatown and later played Bonnie Franklin’s boss on One Day at a Time. So Higgins wasn’t much of a stretch for him

I love those lines you mentioned here from the clip. Both actors played this scene perfectly. Hillerman manages to be serious, humorous, and distainful all at the same time!

I remember seeing the film when it premiered at Grauman's Chinese in 1972. The audience loved it of course. I remember the audiene bursting into laughter when the door knob fell off. Great metaphor for the train wreck of events that just kept happening. They don't make movies like this anymore...and what a concept: NO profanity, NO gross content....the script actually had to be funny...no coarseness as a desperate substitute for true humor.
