Scene hits a little different for me now. In the theatres this was hilarious, still funny, but recently found out Margot Robbie actually for a good portion of her life thought she was genuinely ugly and still holds onto a little insecurity from it. I would imagine some of it coming out now, especially since recently when Barbie came out a lot of people started coming out of the wood work to call her "ugly" or "mid".

Disagree with the note to the film makers. This hits on the very real feeling of not being what you are "supposed" to be. Shes supposed to be perfect barbie but even she cant live up to that. This wouldn't work if she was played by someone who was obviously in fact not barbie pretty to begin with.

@@MinorityGamerReport1 Yeah, I've actually seen the movie now. About half the movie is "haha" jokes and the other is pretty valid social commentary. I feel like this was meant as a "haha" knowing Barbie was originally going to be objectively unattractive but it didn't land that way with me, I stand by my previous comment.
@widM_
@widM_ 6 ай бұрын
100% agree with you. The "note to the filmmakers" was not funny to me cause it missed the point and it turned this otherwise heartbreaking scene into a joke. The most beautiful girls are always the most insecure. They think they will never be enough. Being physically attractive doesn’t mean you are happy with yourself and that you don't struggle with self-esteem and self-worth.
@galll_0375
@galll_0375 5 ай бұрын
Imo this note was more for the audience and especially for little girls. Cause they could think "but if Margot Robbie is considered ugly then how much uglier am I?" So it was to me a funny way to give the right message to the people (everyone can feel ugly) by still giving more insicure people the confirmation that Margot Robbie is in fact beautiful and so no you're not ugly, it's her that is just stunning. Plus if the line wasn't there there would have been a lot of people saying the exact same thing online like "but cmon she's Margot Robbie she can't feel ugly" or things like this one, so it's also a fun way of anticipating them by turning their criticism into comedy

I felt like the commentary was unnecessary. All women feel ugly and insecure sometimes no matter how beautiful they are. I interpreted this scene as, even Barbie can feel ugly because of the pressures that are put on all of us. It was the moment that made her relatable, and then the commentary threw her right out of relatable again 😢

@declaracionespolemicas
@declaracionespolemicas 8 ай бұрын
@@ananyomukherjeeixd281 Maybe because women's worth and value is judged based on her looks and youth. The pressure gets even worse when we're bombarded, practically since birth, by images of impossible beauty standards created by the use of filters, photoshop, facetune, etc. all over social media, both celebrities and influencers creating this false expectation that you'll achieve flawless poreless skin by using X make up product or X skin care rutine. It's hard to be unattractive in a superficial society that only cares about looks, for both genders, but at least if you're a man you can somewhat compensate by getting a great career, making money, having confidence and great humor.
@ananyomukherjeeixd281
@ananyomukherjeeixd281 8 ай бұрын
@@declaracionespolemicas Pretty sure that those beauty products you talk about are promoted by women themselves and they support superficiality. The filters and colors are also used by women the most so at the end of the day only Women are to blame for this issue. Considering that Men beauty shows exist shows that Men beauty matters too to a certain extent just not a makeup or filter based beauty(unlike women). I don't know which country you live in. But in India majority of modern girls have jobs and rate of housewives getting married is decreasing, so it's very obvious that Job and intelligence is far more important than something as cheap as makeup.

Am I the only one here who thinks that maybe this part is a trifle ineffective? Like, we're clearly in the middle of an “emotional” scene, and then the narrator chooses that moment to break the fourth wall and say a funny/quippy line about the attractiveness of the actor? I don't know, but to me, that takes away from the emotional and serious value.

I think it acknowledges that a significant portion of the audience will be thinking, ‘Margot is beautiful. What the hell is she doing having insecurities like a regular girl?’ when the truth is, picture perfect or not, we all have insecurities. Even someone beautiful enough to play Barbie. Of course this moment would land without the joke, but it grounds it in my opinion, making Barbie very very human. Even the most beautiful humans hate their appearance in weak moments/ cannot see what everyone else sees.
