I knew I wasn't crazy... I'm not the only one that remembers Monster having real sugar. The fake sugar is both 1) gross and 2) just about the only thing worse for you than real sugar (even for weight loss). It's like .... real sugar -> T2D, weight gain, associated risks like CHD over the long term... fake sugar -> Still gain the weight, still get T2D, still get all the comorbidities, and also get 10 kinds of cancer. I'm exaggerating a bit, but for real the fake shit is worse for you. This is also probably why people hate Dr. Pepper so much in the UK... the regular (not diet) Dr. Pepper there has fake sugar, it's messed up.
