I'm a person who writes a 7 with a dash through it. I don't remember precisely when I started doing it, but I remember why I started doing it. My handwriting was so terrible that I found it difficult to discern my ones from my sevens, because I draw my ones with the downstroke from the top. Throwing the line through the 7 makes it easy to tell them apart

The “joke for my Pacific Northwest friends” is that the first picture is of Mt. St. Helen’s before it erupted in the 80’s and it was a complete peak. The second is after it erupted and the whole peak blew off, like a wig falling off. Not that great of a joke but I’m from the PNW so I got a chuckle from it.

Also keep in mind the people who developed these number symbols did not use Roman characters, so any similarity to those letters is a coincidence.
