Lessons from this video: If you think the cat bed you're looking at is the right size, get a smaller one. No, smaller. Forget thick, soft cushions. Your cat wants stiff, lumpy, and crinkly. When getting a bed with a roof, make sure it's so low that you're surprised when your cat fits under it. The best beds smell like you. Make sure to rub it thoroughly with unwashed gym socks and your own armpits before presenting it to your cat. In the absence of your BO, the scent of your fabric softener will suffice. Fresh plants are a bonus. Cats love the warms. Next to heaters and in sunbeams are prime locations.

I'll point out reasons why cats seem to reject new beds & prefer plastic bags & then give pointers to get a cat to accept a new bed. First a cats sense of smell is highly sensitive & can smell the chemicals that have been applied to the materials for transport (when shipped overseas in shipping containers, fabrics are sprayed with insecticides and rodent detractors) besides the treatment of dyes for coloring. Go ahead - give it a smell then multiply it 100 times. Now for the plastic bags - they have a smell cats love! Bags are treated with tanin (spelling?) to make them easier to pull apart. Cats are attracted to this smell. (Same reason they chew leather). Some boxes are also treated for waterproofing but a box is a box & cats like small cave like spaces. Also plastic makes a fun sound but that's beside the point. But now to get your cat to use the new bed. Air it out for several days to a week. Outdoors if possible. This is called "gassing off". After the odor has dissipated, put the bed somewhere away from the cat & place an article of clothing that has been worn (so it has your scent on it) in the bed. Leave it in there a few days again. Now put the bed down (up) for your cat without fanfare - in a spot it frequently naps but if possible near you like on the couch or next to a chair. Then when the cat gets in it acknowledge & praise it (without fanfare, just quietly). After a few days take out the item of clothing - the body scent will have blended with the fabric of the be. One other thing - cats are used to being a litter, that's why they like napping/sleeping together. Buy larger beds with this in mind.

The cats who are sleeping in the same bed likely are very close and just want to be together! I volunteer at shelters and I’ve seen many times where cats will sleep with each other, especially kittens. Safety in numbers, and it’ll keep them warm!

I may(?) have a two part solution to the cat bed aversion. First: pick up EVERY empty box/sack/bag everywhere in the house. Second: Since cats like to lay/sleep on pretty much anything that has our human scent on it (even one single dirty sock on the bed), take the cat bed to bed with you and lay on it for a night or two. This will get your human scent into the cat bed. Then have them learn your scent is in it, and they should(?) start using it.

My little dog always liked my pillows and blankets. I bought new ones so he could use the old one and he wanted the one I sweated all over the night before. Sometimes I was even using it at the time. I didn't buy him new as I knew he didn't like the off gassing new pillows have. I let mine air out a week or so before using a new pillow so I understand why cats won't use the new bed but am always confused about the boxes. They smell funny to.

Cats and dogs frequently regulate their body temp by what they lay on. A lot of these cats are intentionally choosing to lay on stone, plants, floors etc. because it's cooler. If it gets cold, they'll give the cat beds another look.

Give it (the bed) time to "gas out" - that is to get rid of all the synthetic chemical and formaldehyde odors that are in the material and padding. Once this happens the bed will smell tolerable to your cat. Cats' sense of smell is extremely acuute & they just can't handle these chemicals.

Thank god my princess loveheart (My cat) loves her princess table I got her, the princess mirror. The two chairs I got for her, her comfy bed with a table over it with her food and water bowl next to her bed, her two couches and her small cabinet she can climb into and she can jump onto it and see the view on her throne with her fanning plant right next to her. I just retired from a second career and have embarked on a third career, I've become a cat bed, I sat in my chair and started counting, I got to 4 and my lap was full of little girl kitten, she slept for two and a half hours. I'm so blessed.

Cats are very sensitive to the scent of lignin. Old book smell. It soothes cats. This is why they will almost always prefer a cardboard box to anything else. Lignin is very close to vanilla. If y'all want your cats to try out the new bed, remove all paper and cardboard and spritz the thing with a very light dusting of vanilla spray. Or, rub the bed whatsit down with brown paper.
