His translation also started the standardization of German (such that it be). I have been in the room in which the translation was done. There was a legend that during this time Luther was tempted by the devil and he threw his ink pot at the devil, leaving a stain on the wall. For a long time tourists would scrape off a bit of the stained plaster and take it with them. And regularly the locals would reapply plaster and ink. Good for business you know. :)

Unfortunately in Luthur’s time most people were still illiterate. The problem lays in the fact that if you have uneducated people reading a Bible each will have his own interpretation of the writings which in essence ends in 10000s of different ways of interpretation. Each person then filters the Bible through their own lens. This throws Christian dogma into chaos. There is in essence no teaching body of the church ( magesterium). So the individual is allowed to makeup and believe what they want. Kind of like today, I am spiritual not religious. This is nothing more then stating that truth can not be known which we know is a lie. We can each have a certain passage in the Bible that speaks to us personally but this does not allow us change the basic dogmas of Christianity. So fast forward 500 years and you now have more religious denominations then you can shake a stick at all teaching something different.

@bigmonkey1254

Very well done. Personally, I find it so curious how the Bible is a sort of "self-perpetuating message". Even when people fight and war over interpretation, it's overall message is only proven in the matter. That message is how humans are not God and thus need God in order to live proper lives. Jesus warned many times about false teachers, so it really should come as no surprise that there will always be those who attempt to exploit the Bible for their own gain. That is why I think it was very good of Luther to translate it like he did. Amusingly, every "interpretation" of the Bible I've heard used for immoral purposes share the same fatal flaw. They are being used for selfish purpose and do not stand up when countered with another specific passage. I've heard too often people say that the Bible is filled with "contradictions". Now, I'm sure most people who know literature should be able to tell intentional juxtaposition when they read it!

When is ANYTHING concerning the Bible told in ANYTHING but myths, misconceptions, half-truths, or outright lies ? Because the Bible was butchered, (or as they called, editing), by the Roman Catholic Church at the "Second Council Of Nicaea" in 787CE by deciding that only they had the authority & the right to decide which Gospels were included or excluded, not to mention their 'editing' of the first 9 books of the Old Testament, so much so, that Genesis itself makes little sense with all of it's omissions & it's constant contradicting of itself. I seriously doubt that were Moses brought back just to verify the Bible's validity, he wouldn't be able to make any clear sense of the Gospels that are attributed to him as the author. And it's accurate to note, that more people have been killed in religious wars of Christianity, or literally murdered by the church, or it's representatives, than for any other reason. And the King James version is even worse, as those who were translating it from Latin & French to English omitted or mistranslated it to the point that it made even less sense, and has caused even more arguments & violence due to the liberties that the monks translating it took. It's why I steer clear of both religion & the Bible when dealing with other people, though I probably know more about the Bible than most church-going Christians. because if I choose to read accurate versions of both the Old & New Testaments, then I'll pick up my copy of a fairly recent Hebrew to English copy that's on my bookshelf. I also have copies of most of the 19 omitted Gospels of the Bible, several of them having been Gospels written by women, (Gospels that the Catholic Church still deems to be heresy, as most Christian religions still wrongly demonize women in their patriarchal views). One day, before I pass on, I truly hope to both find & read an accurately restored Bible, a book that will really allow me to read the tales & the histories as they were originally meant to be read.

@@SierraThunder No, that's not quite correct. You make it sound like the Roman Catholic Church decided everything in the Second Council of Nicaea, when it was actually a council that assembled various christian groups with not quite the same view. In the first place Nicaea was in what's now Turkey and at that time it was under the sphere of influence of the Orthodox Church. So what was decided back then was the result of a discussion of several groups and it is respected by both Catholics and Orthodox alike.

Luther had more than 1 trial and at the first one the church was not that concerned. I am not sure when the Bible was first translated into German, and I believe there might have been an earlier translation. Truly though Luther did bring to light some problems the church was experiencing. Luther removing parts of the Bible would have led to some more accurate comedy. After all Luther being a Catholic religious accepted the Bible in both Latin and Greek as used by the church for about 1,200 years. Luther included the Deutrocannonicals for quite awhile until he moved them to the center of his Bible and later removing them. One thing that would have made a great addition would be influence of the printing press, the Internet of its day. If Luther had to use scribes and hand copies of his Bibles his church may have never gotten off the ground. Bibles were still nothing that poor folks could afford to get, but it did put them into the hands of people of moderate means.

Common Protestant misconceptions abound. The bible was first printed by Catholics in 1455, 29 years before Luther was even born. Most people could not read at the time. Those that could read had full access the bible at any Catholic Church if they did not a printed version. The handwritten manuscripts were chained down as they were extremely valuable not to prevent common people from reading them. In order to justify his interpretation, Luther was forced to almost completely ignore the book of James and many other texts. Amongst other things rejected by most Protestant's as "unbiblical" Luther believed in the Saints, Sacraments, The title: "Mary, Mother of God" and a modified version of the Real Presence of Jesus. As the Protestant movements began instantly to splinter and division and chaos ensued, Luther complained: "There will be the greatest confusion. Nobody will allow himself to be led by another man’s doctrine or authority. Everybody will be his own rabbi; hence the greatest scandals." ... "There are as many sects and beliefs as there are heads. This fellow will have nothing to do with baptism; another denies the Sacrament; a third believes that there is another world between this and the Last Day. Some teach that Christ is not God; some say this, some say that. There is no rustic so rude but that, if he dreams or fancies anything, it must be the whisper of the Holy Spirit, and he himself a prophet". ... "How many doctors have I made through preaching and writing! Now they say, “Be off with you! Go off with you! Go to the devil!” Thus it must be. When we preach they laugh …. When we get angry and threaten them, they mock us, snap their fingers at us and laugh in their sleeves". (quoted in O’Hare, The Facts About Luther)

Both are a forum in which you can express your thoughts on the writing and the meaning of book in question. It isn’t necessarily to tell you what the book means, or what to believe, it is to open your mind to a different point of view. Something that it appears you have no desire to do.

📜🆚🖥️ Wait for the Next Level, a Computer Programmed by GOD, then you would believe the Book. ☝️😕 But without kiding, extremes are dangerous and some religions are camouflaged MILITARISM for political cause, but Atheism can also become fanatism leading into Brutal Persecutions against innofensive individuals, like grandma, Nuns and Monks... * There are good people with Bad religions, and BAD people with BAD religions, or something worst, call it Last Prophet idolized to death in name of a god... 💀 wgt

The "Protestant Church" - ? Seriously?
@ujue1966

You missed a VERY important part of the story. Luther decided to change the bible by taking many books/certain scriptures OUT of the bible so that it would fit HIS narrative. Gee, did God give Luther permission to change the word of God? NO. Did Luther know better than the Apostle who were taught by God? NO. Results, chaos amongst the people trying interpreting Luther's NEW version of the bible. Now we have over 30,000 different "Christian" churches thanks to Luther. One church in the beginning...the Roman Apostolic Catholic church, the ONLY church you can go to globally until Luther another anti-Christ Satan helper came and f*%k it all up!

Slight correction. The books Luther decided to omit were the Apocrypha, which were not originally part of Catholic Canon in the first place. Those books were added later. In a sense, Luthor only took them out because they were never part of the original scripture text under the Apostles in the first place. An understandable move, given it was closer to the source content. All that is a moot point, though. The main point of the reformation was to protest human interference with God's Salvation Plan. Namely, the Pope's design of turning the church into a money-based credit loaning agency over the soul, rather than a loving guide to heaven based on God.

You mean in the way that the Catholic church decided what books to include in the bible in the first place? You know, to fit THEIR narrative? It's funny that someone who obviously belongs to one of the most morally bankrupt religious institutions the world has ever seen is calling a man who dared to question it an 'Anti-Christ'. It just shows how far Catholicism has fallen, though many protestant denominations are admittedly no better. It's why I don't go to church anymore. Tired of the obvious corruption and hypocrisy of it all.

@@RedneckSith oh really? I hope you don't get your information from Wikipedia, KZbin or non-unauthenticated sources. Explain this then, Martin Luther in his memoirs writes how he wanted the Book of Revelation removed because it went against his Doctrine that your saved by faith alone when Revelations states saved by works. Luther did manage to have it removed along with all the other books contradicting his doctrine. Much later people went against him and put it back along with the others.

How lucky that Luther had a wealthy friend with a castle to hide in. Who knows the hundreds of people who did not have that luck and had to fall or die at the stake for being "heretics".
