A short scene of a South Park episode (season 5 unknown episode number) with a kind of distorted way of storytelling, still funny though.

The biggest problem I had with the book of Job is that it contradicts God’s omniscience. He would already know Job would stay faithful to God and he didn’t need to prove a thing to Satan in the first place. God basically let all of the terrible things happen to Job for nothing.

It also contradicts the Christian Narrative that Satan is an evil fallen Angel. It was GOD who told Satan to do those things to Job.

I like how he, somehow, replaced all of his children with... even more children! And here I am thinking to myself... wait a second, you're God. Can't you just resurrect his family that you just killed? Can you just turn back time and make it so that those tests never ever happened and he would be happy with his original family, in his original house, with his original slaves and cattle, etc.? Nop! Instead, he creates children out of thin air, with whom Job would have NO emotional connection to whatsoever.

God did give Job more of everything. The lesson is Job stayed faithful to God even though he lost everything. Satan said to God take everything away and he will curse you. When you are struggling Satan is the one who’s trying to break you. Keep the faith and you will be rewarded. Again Job went through all this because Satan tried to tempt God and lost.

I don't know what my faith is and all I care about the Bible are the good lessons that we can take to our lives, like caring for the others and stuff. But Job's book is insane, Job earned his things back and had more children after all his suffering, but those lives lost were considered like they were nothing, like if you could replace the lives of your deceased children and eployees any time. People consider this beautiful of how you still has faith in God after all the bad things that happened to you but I had considered this book insane even when I used to go to church. I remember asking my Sunday school teacher about the deceased people and she replied, "but God gave him even more", I think she didn't get my question about how insane God was.
@unknownuser48163 жыл бұрын
True, it's like people are worthless and it weakens the meaning of valuing and loving someone as god is more important. The argument would be something like "oh they'll see each other in heaven and they know that. Also, Jobs has to be happy their loved ones will meet God" And probably something like "you need to balance your attachments in your lifetime". Thing is, I don't think that most of the religious people firmly believe they're gonna see their loved ones ever again and it obviously brings a lot of sorrow and people that truly believe scriptures with their hearts are somewhat mentally ill and scary to be around with. I had a grandmother I did not treat very well when I was young and from time to time I feel anguished with the thought that I won't ever be able to redeem myself since she passed away experiencing the immature me. Overall I don't believe or value religious scriptures as I became a much better person when I left them behind. It's sometimes very scary to live your life knowing you may lose anything out of nowhere but you also give love more value and act accordingly.

One thing that really bothers me about the story of Job (besides the whole god ruining Job's life to prove a point to Satan thing), is that the story ends with Job getting even richer than before with a new, larger family because god rewards him for all his faith. Ok, aside from the emotional trauma that he suffered throughout the ordeal, what if after all that, he told god to kick rocks? Would god say "Ooooh crap, that did not go as expected. I better work some damage control here." Or would he, and I am pretty sure this is how it would go down, tell Job "Alright, then you can just rot in the gutter!"
@johnshen45692 жыл бұрын
On top of that. Job did curse his birth (3:3) did blame God for being unjust (9:22, 19:7). Yes he didn’t literally say “fk you God”, but he pretty much blamed God (either unjust or stupid). I don’t know how God still “won” the wager with Satan.

Also when God supposedly gets jealous when people worshipped idols and such. Why would God care? Is God insecure and he needs praise from others to feel good about himself and if people don't he'll punish them? So basically God is a prideful jealous asshole? Nah. I think there's some sort of creator or force behind the universe, not sure what, but I'm confident if there's a God he's not an angry asshole who is essentially out to get people. Religions use stuff like this as fear tactics to get you to behave a certain way (and ultimately contribute money or service to them). I mean I sure hope I'm wrong and God isn't the wrathful asshole the Bible paints him out to be. Also there are what like over a thousand religions are every one of them think they're right and the others are wrong. Well then apparently either 999/1000 are wrong or everyone is wrong. And then gives Job all that he had and more, but his servants and his children don't come back to life, God gives him new servants and new children. Basically he replaces them, as if they were cattle.

We have to keep in mind that the book of Job, though in the old testament, was less a tale about how God was unfair to his devout servant. Rather, if we view it in a transcendental context, it is the take of a man who had much, did good, and lost everything. Instead of lamenting his tragedy, he was sagacious enough to understand how good and bad exist interdependently with each other. It was less a story of a man who was manipulated by deities, but instead a man who chose to live on his own terms, with a broadmindedness that is rare. In his day, people died, and lawlessness was rampant. People live, people died, the healthy may become sick or die, but in the grand scheme of things, that is all still Life.

@@michaeltrinh4394 Take the anthropomorphic God out of the story, insert the "forces of nature" and "faith in life" and rabid atheists will praise it. It's a good story. Quite reminiscent of Stoic philosophy I find. In a time when people's entire families could die in the blink of an eye, it was vital to have an anchor to keep on living. In a more primitive time, that was a personal god. While I don't believe in God myself and do find this bit funny, Matt and Trey and every other particularly vehement Atheist should put to use the critical thinking they purport to possess and try to understand the necessity of the these stories in the context of the period it was written.

If Kyle’s parents told him the true ending of Job’s story, it would’ve cheered him up and inspired him to have patience and keep faith. This would’ve also foreshadowed what happened to Cartman at the end of the episode, the opposite of what really happened to Job in the ending of his story. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away!…and vice versa.

They got one thing wrong, God removed the “shield” around Job and Satan did all those bad things. Matt and Trey also forgot to mention God gave Job twice of everything he had. Money, children, animals. “But chino, his old family is still dead”. Yes, but that just makes the after party of the resurrection bigger, bro. This episode affected me when I was younger. Thank god I read the Bible later and knew the rest of the details. Still top five South Park episode I enjoy.

Yes. Because new wife and kids make you forget all about your dead wife and kids... Also considering that God is omniscient and Satan knows that then it is pretty clear that Satan tricked God into allowing Satan to do all those horrible things to Job. So either way the story isn't a nice one...
@chinojosa45634 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you read. His wife didn’t die, and Job believed in a resurrection so he knew he’d see his kids again. How did satan trick god if at the end Job has more than he had, Job had a renewed faith, and the devils point failed about job worshipping God and not being a baby when satans world hits you hard.
@Pikkabuu4 жыл бұрын
@@chinojosa4563 Even if his wife survived my point still stands. Does a new kid remove the sorrow for a dead kid? And you don't think that Satan managing to speak God to allow him to torment someone when both of them know the result beforehand isn't tricking God?! Again, both of them know the end result already so there is no reason to bet, the only reason to accept the bet would be to torment Job and of course Satan wouldn't pass a chance on tormenting people, especially if he can trick God into allowing that too. So again. Either God is dumb or he gave Satan the permission to mess with Job knowingly. Either case God isn't a good guy according to the story.
@chinojosa45634 жыл бұрын
Pikkabuu Pikkabuu All right, first of all, you’re thinking from your perspective. Putting your beliefs unto other people like Job. The first thing he said is [the lord gives and he takes away, let him continue to be praised] after his kids died. He wasn’t “fine” with it but he accepted it. Its okay to feel bad for job but don’t be angry at God when Job wasn’t either. Also to say they both knew the outcome is just an assumption. God “knows” what you’re going to do cause he knows you better than your own mother, sibling, spouse. Satan thought he knew but not cause all he sees is what you do, not who you are in the inside. Again, my decent hearted person, you need to read. It’s a good book. If you read it with an open mind you’d see the good parts and the parts where you see a problem, choose if you accept it or not. Which is okay. God wants you to know him. How do you get to know anyone? By reading stories and hearing about him, you believe what you know what sounds right about the person and what doesn’t. Thanks for reading.

I've never thought of this story this way until I saw a comment about it, but in my opinion, this story shows that God is flawed. Satan tempted him with pride, and God caved. God has canonically sinned. Man, the old testament is wild.
