Umbrasyl didn't even notice that he wasn't fighting or that he was absent from the rest of the group. It was important in the overall storyline for Scanlan to have the reputation of running away to avoid confrontation. If you recall from the sphinx Osysa's prophetic assessment of Scanlan: "No one cares about you. I am no different." Translation: the powerful will ignore you because they do not consider you a threat. In their injured, weakened state, Vox Machina would not be able to defeat an ancient dragon head on. They needed to catch him totally off guard and Scanlan was the perfect candidate to deliver the killing blow. If you weren't aware, Mythcarver gives special attack & damage bonuses. In addition, if the wielder can invoke bardic inspiration (which Scanlan did with his song), the enemy gets disadvantage in its defense. Btw, in the actual campaign, Grog got the killing blow. In this show, Grog killed the blue dragon Brimscythe in season 1 (Vax did it in the campaign) so they probably didn't want to repeat that, especially so soon after he triumphed over Kevdak. Regarding the Vestiges of Divergence, I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say each member of Vox Machina will get at least 1 Vestige. There are many more - at least 25 total documented, though most have not yet appeared in a Critical Role setting. Vestiges also have 3 states: dormant, awakened and exalted. Vax's wings come from his armour's exalted state. I think we've only seen the awakened states of the other three Vestiges.

The power of a dragon is determined by 2 things: their age, and their hoard. Thordak is essentially accelerating the power of the newly hatched dragon army with the gold he's acquiring. Also, they foreshadowed (briefly) that dragons of different chroma don't get along in the first episode of this season. That's why it was such a shock and harbinger of doom to see them working together. Couple all of that with all the dragon eggs being in a seat of fire (insinuating that they are all fire dragons of Thordak) and that dragons are naturally highly intelligent and cunning, and it's not hard to see where Raishan is coming from, turning on Thordak and going to Vox Machina to work with them against him: She would rather deal with them after Thordak is out of the picture than go against Thordak and his army alone. Don't sweat it if Mighty Nein comes out before the next season of Vox Machina: where VM are a bunch of heroes that happen to be assholes, MN are a self-proclaimed bunch of assholes that happen to be saving the world. I think you'll like their aesthetic and general vibe even more. Mollymauk is your spirit animal, Beauregard and Yasha are total badass awesome bombs, Caleb is a tormented soul/mood and a half all by himself, and if you're all about the dick jokes, haaaaave you met Jester? lol

I love this sudden appearance of cowardice in Scanlan. Sure, he's always been a bit flaky, but he hasn't ever ditched the party like this before. But, he also has never had anything to live for before. Now that he has Kaylie, his life has purpose and is worth a lot more to him. I think that's why he is suddenly so scared to die.

Didn't he fail the dragons terryfying presence? And he does a lot because he has crap for wisdom.
@johnobrien7562 Жыл бұрын
it's actually been part of the Scanlan in the animated show - when he has time to think about it. He was the one who had to be pulled through the "booty-ful" portal in S1E1. He later said that they had enough evidence to take back that they didn't have to go fight the Briarwoods in S1E10, and in this season, he made a huge point that they weren't able to fight the Conclave. Overcoming this fear has been his arc.

Kraghammer was the very first mission we saw Vox Machina go on when they started live streaming their game. It was fun, they fought some Mind Flayers, Grog got kidnapped for a minute, and Grog tripped Vax which I mention because in retaliation Vax shaved off half of Grog’s beard while he slept.

Also even changes in different media from the source material that was in another media is not retconning. Retconning actually changes the history. Differences in the animated series from what happened in the table game does not change the history of what happened in the table game, so is not retconning. For example Marvel comics has retconned many, many things in their comics history. The MCU movies have also changed many things from the comics source material, BUT that is not retconning. It is just a difference in different media, which has it's own history.

The Kraghammer arc was also the source of some of the "favourite kills" montage from season one. Keyleth pushing the guy under the lava and Grog biting the tongue out of the monster were all bits from fights at the table.

13:37 You haven't watched the campaign so just to let you know Liam (Vax) has the lucky feat which allows him to re-roll things a certain amount of times per day. So VAX in particular saying that there's no such thing as luck is so funny. It's also perfectly in character for what he's going through with the Matron (The game mechanic being interpreted as fate by the character, etc), but I still was like, _OK LIAM_ Mr. "I"ll Use Luck" says Luck doesn't exist, _Sure_ lol.

Honestly one of my favorite parts of this show was the group’s reaction to Scanlan living. They’re all just relieved, with Pike still calling him “fucker” for scaring her. Compared to something like Persona 5, where Ryuji nearly dies to save the group, and when he turns up alive, they beat the shit out of him for scaring them.
@I.Lostalim Жыл бұрын
09:40 One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet, and I take no credit because it was pointed out to me by others ... If you translate the page Scanlan is reading in his dream, it's the wording from a letter sent to Keyleth from a guest character Kerrek, played by Patrick Rothfus. Another fun reminder a lot of the artists were also long standing fans of the original stream. They met him in Westruun but he sent this letter later, and Rothfus recorded himself reading it and sent the audio to the Crit Role team to play for the table. 💙 The algorithm only just put you in front of me, so I have just crashed my way through your entire LoVM run in two days 😆 You've been my favourite reaction to a series I absolutely love. Looking forward to seeing you tackle the next couple of seasons when they come out!

@@thehappyaipom From what I recall (and just looked up) Grog doesn't fall to the ground at this moment in the game, Scanlan grabs him with the hand then polymorphs him into an Eagle (making him smarter by accident), then Keyleth bamfs up to them riding Eagle Grong and falls out of the air as an earth elemental (a "Keyteor" as I think the joke goes) and smashes into the ground, so I think they used that moment as an inspiration for this. I do remember Grog falling and using the knuckles to gain size before hitting the ground but I cant remember when that was.
@thehappyaipom Жыл бұрын
@El ok that makes more sense. I know it happened, I'm mixing the two events up. I just assumed the size change had something to do with it mechanics wise. It's been awhile since I played myself. The rules are just as rusty as Crit role campaign 1 events haha
@NoActuallyGo-KCUF-Yourself Жыл бұрын
If anything, a larger creature should take more damage for being heavier. (×2 size = ×8 mass. momentum ×8 = force of impact ×4 to ×8, depending on factors of impact time and air resistance.. anyway, maybe just ×2 fall damage for each size category above medium, ÷2 dmg for each smaller size.)

It was only fitting that they ended Season 2 in that manner. With one dragon felled, albeit barely, it gives everyone hope that the rest will be as well. And THIS fight left everyone running on fumes, with practically nothing left in the collective tank when it was over. And the reveal at the end? Perfect. They waited until now to finally give us a proper introduction to the fourth member of the Chroma Conclave: *_Raishan, the Diseased Deceiver._* And she absolutely lived up to her title with that reveal. And I definitely wasn't expecting our first inter-party kiss to be Pike and Scanlan. But they earned it. And Scanlan slaying Umbrasyl with Mythcarver, the vestige gifted to him by the sphinx that the dragon murdered? Poetic justice. They definitely stepped up their game this season. Every relationship within the party, and that of the party itself, has been building up well in this adaptation, the pacing is near-flawless, and it's giving us the same story that was first told back in 2015 but telling it in a way that is fresh. I can only pray that it continues to be as consistent next season.

I was luckily an early "Critter" and started watching just months into the first campaign when it was running. Your reactions have been "absolutely delightful" to watch, and so appreciated. Also, R.I.P. Lance Reddick. He did so well voicing Thordak, and we're incredibly lucky to have had his talent contribute to such an extraordinary villain. I'll be sad but excited to see who fulfills the role for the rest of Thordak's appearances in however many seasons he's our big baddie.

Sam played one hell of a support character. By that I mean the music he plays during a battle usually plays a part in boosting allies or weakening enemies. His choices and rolls have been make or break moments in many situations.

“I love our team!” LoVM does a terrific job lMHO of showing how TTRPGs and D & D in particular highlights the strengths (and possibly weaknesses) of a party (which often feels like a family in my table’s games). Deadly boss battles usually come down to multiple huge moments/rolls for multiple players regardless of who gets the killing blow. We often use our turns to save someone and it often feels “last second” even if it’s not.

I know Keyleth is your favorite so I admire your ability to still give her a bit of a critique in your opening. I was feeling very bad for Vax at the start of the season. His sister had made him believe she didn’t need him (in the past) and Keyleth had rejected him and flirted a bit with Kash in front of him. But Vex showed him she needs him too (“do not go far from me”) and Keyleth figured out her feelings (even if she didn’t express them yet). People like Vax who wear their hearts on their sleeves need to be told they’re needed too. He went through a lot! His story was beautiful.

What I really find so surprising is how you fall in love with these characters and story so easily. What makes it so much more special is when you realize that this phenomenal story unfolds because of the people playing in the story that Matt set up, and was entirely driven by the choices they made during it (and some good/bad) dice rolls.
