As an EMT, we were told to NEVER remove an impaled object from someone, unless it interfered with your ability to provide care. So, if Cassian left the knife in his chest, then he had a pretty good chance of surviving, but if he pulled it out, he wouldn’t live very long. It looked like the knife punctured one of the chambers in his heart, so the sack around it would have been pierced as well, which means the knife was preventing blood from entering the pericardium and squeezing the heart until it stopped beating.

@Jean-Boner - Shock reaches 100% - definitely ;) Especially if you go for the most obvious choice: carotid/jugular artery (almost the same choice in a way - as one is supplying the oxygen to the head and the other drains the deoxygenated blood from the head). Cutting any of them, even with a pencil will kill you in just a few minutes (less than this as you won't be able to do much after just 1 minute of bleeding anyway). You can also go for axilary artery if you can, even with a pencil/pen, sharp object (not necessarily a knife in anyway). Not that easy as the above choice, but possible in some scenarios. Or a classic move with a femoral one. So yeah... it is possible to kill somebody with a pencil, suprisingly in a fast way...

You counted the seven bullets. Fun fact. The producers/writers (who are hollywood stuntmen) tried to make sure that all the guns held the correct amount of rounds. John either reloads or finds another gun at the right count throughout the whole trilogy. The attention to detail is amazing. John Wick is most often shown with blue light hitting him. Villains in the trilogy are shown in red light. Neutral parties are shown in yellow or warm light. For a trilogy with an insane body count there's a lot of fun movie making care that went into them.

Well, you said it correct, John either reloads or finds another gun at the right count throughout "the whole trilogy". I'm not so sure about this in the the fourth one. The scene on the roundabout ;-) doesn't seem okay in this respect. But it might just be that I missed some reloads ...

@@filippironet9231 I think it's just awkward cuts, we don't see him reload and that might just be because of pacing for the scene being more important than to show him reload, or maybe it got lost on the editing floor somehow. That scene is not a one shot, so they get a pass from me for missing a reload in the final cut.

All the more impressive, as, purportedly, they opt to film the gun fights without even blanks in the magazine and/or chamber. muzzle flare and the like supposedly are added in post. (I'm not finding the source RN, but I remember reading about that in two magazine articles, as well as ImDB, I think)

21:30 The reason he shoots Gianna at the end is because it's implied that she's Catholic, and suicide is a mortal sin, so he's sparing her being damned for committing suicide, but also, by taking her hand, and waiting til she passed out from blood loss, he comforted her. It's such an awesome scene and adds so much depth to John's character.

I thought it had to do with the fact that perhaps he MUST leave his mark on her, so that Santinio doesn't just hear that his sister commited suicide, but that she was actually killed.

Wow, I love that interpretation! I always thought that it was just, as the first commenter said, to leave a mark to show Santino he did his task to kill her, so the marker will be officially finally honored. But that religious interpretation is great too, and it is supported by the fact John himself said he still considered Gianna a friend. Thanks for the excellent insight.

@@themask8221 Thanks. :) I cant take total credit for it. I was talking with a friend (who's a devout Catholic), and he initially brought it up. We batted the idea around and it seemed to make sense to both of us. I mean, yeah, it also probably has to do with the Marker, since, technically, if John didn't 'officially' kill her, it wouldn't be fulfilled. But I still like to think my friends interpretation had a part to play as well.

In case no one went over it since I didn’t read all 400ish comments, the body shot followed by the head shot is considered to be standard tactical practice when engaging a “threat” to completely “eliminate that threat to you”. In real life it’s been noted that a lot of individuals can continue to be a threat even after being hit several times in the chest as it can take several minutes for the heart to stop or for all the blood necessary to be exanguinate in order to loose consciousness. So typically it is taught and practiced as two shots to center mass followed by a shot to the head. The body shots should at least slow down or partially incapacitate the threat then the head shot will be followed up for complete neutralization of the threat. I am using the typical terms here as you have probably noticed such as “threat, incapacitate, neutralize’ etc. just for fun and completeness. Since if you were defending yourself w a weapon you don’t want to say you want to kill someone (unless that’s what you really want to do which is of course a crime) what you want to accomplish is to stop the threat of serious or mortally injuring you with deadly force. A lot of legal stuff goes into it. Though prob went past the main subject matter basically that’s the approach and rationale behind the shot or shots to the chest followed by head shot. One practices like that so it’s just muscle memory and one doesn’t waste time trying to decide “should it shoot the chest which is a bigger target but may not completely stop the threat or the head which is almost always a stopping shot but a harder shot to take due to it’s smaller size and higher mobility of a target compared to the chest since the head can tilt, turn, look up or down, vs the chests lesser range of movement as a target. My favourite take of that is that John killed a lot of people to get the picture of the woman who made him explicitely promise not to go back to killing a lot of people after she died. He loves her so much he does everything he can to break his promise to her.

I did security at hotel’s for 30 years. In a fight you’re going to get hit. You ignore the pain at the moment and spend two days in hospital at the end, or you end up being carried by 6 friends.

The 2 shots to the chest 1 to the head is called the Mozambique Drill its a tactical drill sometimes done with just 1 shot to the chest and 1 to the head as you see in this movie, there are scenes he does do 2 shots then 1 as well throughout all the movies.

The caliber of that rifle will penetrate most concealable body armor but most professionals use AP rounds (armor piercing). The shotgun is 12 gauge solid slug AP, because regular 12 gauge can't penetrate standard body armor.

Keanu does a shooting competition called Three gun. In it you go through a series of stages using three different kinds of guns. You use a pistol, a shotgun and a rifle. So when you see him shooting he can do it with such proficiency and accuracy.

I like how they make John to be the mythical Baba Yaga. He appears from the shadows only when he wants you to see him, and when he shot that goon in the shins and he screams, the mob boss listens to the yells and the foot steps, they make it as if it's an actual monster growling and walking towards you. They get better as they go along - first one was good because it was something somewhat original, but this one is more squared away and opens up the lore and some of the fight choreography etc is better; third one more of that which makes it better still. That's why everybody is hyped for 4 and 5 - you have an expectation that 4 will be better than 3 and 5 will be better than 4, which is a high bar to vault.

That liner in his suit is absolute science fiction. Real body armor that's soft like that is quite thick, can only really stop pistol shots, and degrades the more shots it takes (it would also break his ribs and completely incapacitate him even if the bullets didn't penetrate). Armor rated to stop rifles comes in two real-world varieties. Ceramic armor is relatively lightweight, but it's rigid, and as soon as it's shot it starts breaking apart so it couldn't last more than a few shots, and each shot would need to be in a separate part of the armor. Steel armor can take essentially unlimited hits by whatever pistol or rifle bullets it's designed to stop, with thicker steel stopping more energetic bullets, but it's very heavy and rigid. Another issue is how the bullets just impact and can be wiped off like nothing. Real world body armor tries to capture the bullet, because on impact the bullet will break apart and send shards of metal flying at high speed parallel to the armor. If a person is wearing armor that means fragments of bullet flying up and hitting the person's neck, or sideways into the person's arms arms, etc. So, there's generally an added layer of plastic or something to capture those fragments right at the impact site. They say in the film that it's some kind of ceramic composite, and the best theory I can come up with is that it's made with a bunch of smaller ceramic plates in a flexible, overlapping arrangement. The military was looking at something similar called Dragon Skin years ago. The project was a complete failure in the real world, basically a fraud, and military contract got canceled and the company making it went bankrupt. Maybe in the John Wick universe the underworld has a vastly superior version of it. But the individual ceramic plates would still break on each impact, so it wouldn't last long in a firefight, and the outermost layer facing John's enemies would need to capture those bullet fragments. Ultimately any armor can be defeated with a sufficiently energetic and pointy projectile, and there are bullets made specifically for penetrating various kinds of armor. Some have steel cores, or even more exotic materials in their construction, and some will even explode on impact to cause even more damage to armor. But anyway, it's John Wick, he's able to survive crazy stuff, and recover from injuries at an accelerated rate. Magic armor that makes him immune to everything and enemies that never think to aim for his head can be hand-waved away for the sake of entertainment. I sometimes wish they stuck with a bit more grounded realistic gunplay, but I can overlook it for the sake of enjoying the action set-pieces and incredible stunt work.

TL;DR it's a movie, roll with it. And also HACKSMITH proved that the concept is not entirely crazy, just less effective in real life. Which is way more than you can say about most contraptions in action movies of the last hundred years or so. So again: roll with it. It's fine.

I got to meet Mr. Reeves while he was training for this film. He attended 2-gun and 3-gun competitions all over the country in addition to his training with Taran Tactical. He randomly showed up to an event I was in, at the Rod and Gun Club in El Paso, while I was stationed at Ft. Bliss. It was not an officially sanctioned event (it was organized, but purely for fun, no national ranking). I showed up and discovered that he'd paid to cater food and drink for the entire event. He treated the entire thing like a total non-event, gave out autographs to people who recognized him, and he placed upper-mid pack. There was no publicity, no cameras, no anything....he was just there, and competed along with everyone else. He's probably the nicest person associated with Hollywood; a total class-act. I'm not big on the whole celebrity worship thing, but I did get to shake his hand and thank him for the water and food.

You're gonna love Parabellum (part 3). And Lawrence Fishburne is not part of the high table but he rules all the "forgotten" people - the ones that are there but unnoticed. Which gives him eyes and ears everywhere. So although he's not one of the "ruling class", he's probably just as powerful.

The car wasn't what he was after.....the picture of his wife in the car is what he cared about. After shooting the last guy....John knew he was a dead man and he wasn't going to fight it. He walked home and grab his wife's necklace. He knew when they showed up at his home. He didn't fight....he just sat there, placed the necklace over his heart and closed his eyes. He was ready to die.....

Your 'I want more' line at the 46 minute mark really got me. Can't decide if you were channeling Dopinder from Dead Pool 2 or Kirsten Dunst from Interview with the Vampire. Either way, great react and review video. I think the main thing Wick 2 did was not be a dud sequel as has happened so many times. Great action scenes, and continued world building of the Continentals and the society of assassins, and yeah laid the foundation for the future Wick outings.

Reeves is actually a highly trained shooter. He's trained with the absolute best (Tarantactical). The shooting/reloading is practically muscle memory, making it easier to act while sitting than it may appear.

The King of the Bowery was to show that there are folks beyond the High Table that have agency. In essence, the High Table runs the world, but the King runs the streets. And the Continental, though instrumental to the Table, has its own power and leverage, so Winston is making a play, and in a way, is using John to destabilize the whole structure.

The two shots to the body and one to the head is called the Mozambique drill or failure to stop drill. If the two body shots do not stop the opponent the head shot is ALMOST a guaranteed kill shot. Larger caliber and more powerful cartridges will penetrate lighter weight body armor. Although in this movie nobody has a large enough caliber.

When it comes to shooting people, you don't aim for the head. The head is small and easy to miss, you aim for the torso, because it is bigger and easier to hit, and even if they have protection, the force of impact will knock someone down, so they'll be vulnerable and in pain, which is difficult to recover from.

Great reaction. I subscribed after watching your first John Wick reaction and dived into your Star Wars and Marvel reactions. Fantastic reactions. In the first John wick movie you get to see that there is this assassin organization. And it's infiltrated all aspects of our society here. This movie you get to see that the organization is worldwide. That there are codes, honor, and certain amounts of respect that go along with being a member of this society. I've always thought that throughout the movie you get to see why Santino's Father chose his sister over him. She respected those ways and was all about that life. Santino was a cruel and power hungry brat. He chose weak henchman which was why I was so easy for John to just mow through them. Her henchman were more formidable for John. She faced her death on her own terms with honor and respect, because she knew that John would handle it in the end. And in the end Santino went and hid in the Continental. Thinking he would be protected by the rules that he had already broken. And now you can see why Santino is a father chose his sister over him. She was the stronger of the two. She was more honorable and respectful of the two. At least that's the way I have always thought of it. As far as the shooting at the shins. That goes back to old martial arts and self-defense training. As a teenager I took martial arts and one of the things that they had always mentioned besides it being for defense only, was three things: Go for the eyes, man can't see man can't fight. Go for the throat, man can't breathe man can't fight. Go for the knees, man can't stand man can't fight. Go for any of those three areas, it gives you time to get away and regroup. It gives you more of a defensive posture. It gives you more of a tactical advantage if your attacker is injured. The thing I like about these movies is they happen close together. There isn’t a huge Timelapse between movies. Shows how tough John Wick is to not get much rest. Can’t wait for the fourth movie to come out. They’re already working on a fifth movie and two spin-offs of John Wick. One is a TV series called the Continental which happens prior to John Wick and the second is a movie called Ballerina. I’d love to know the story behind John Wick and Winston. They have a more father-son relationship.

There's a fan theory that Winston is John's father and gave him up to be trained. Another is that he's John's father-in-law (either with or without John's knowledge) or that he's the father of the daughter of a character we meet in JW3 (again, with or without John's knowledge). It also appears that Winston has some kind of beef with the High Table or others in the organization and he's using John's situation as a means of settling his own score.

@23:50...Different types of bullet resistant body armor are rated for the caliber they can handle. They mentioned silicon carbide and ceramic matrices being sown into the kevlar. The kevlar itself is for the smaller caliber pistols most people use in the film, while the silicon carbide/ceramic matrices are for the more potent pistol/rifle rounds. Body armor has many levels depending on the protection offered. Level I is obsolete. Level IIA is good for 9mm (1165ft/s) and .40S&W (1065ft/s) FMJ (full metal jacket) pistol calibers. Level II is good for all pistol rounds up to an including .357 magnum JSP (jacketed soft point). Level IIIA is good for all pistol rounds up to .44 magnum. Level III is the first one capable of handling rifle ammo. Six shots of 7.62x51 NATO (2780 ft/s). Level III+ can take the same as III but also M855 green tip and the M193 5.56 ammo which was used by the US Military in their battle rifles. Level IV is rated for one hit from 7.62mm armor piercing (2880 ft/s). There is an intermediate Level IIIA+ that is rated for shotgun, FN 5.7 and 9mm defense rounds but it's not an official rating from NIJ (National Institute of Justice)

I agree with the other comment to see man on fire. A great movie I'm sure ull love. As to if it matters the bullet vs the body armor. Short answer yes. There are different levels of body armor , and higher velocity rounds can defeat armor designed to defeat lower velocity, say lower maybe being a type of pistol , vs a higher being more a rifle . Not a perfect answer, but think u can get an idea . But good reaction. Loved it. Also would like to throw something in retrospect. When John asked how was he, answer was.. he was a good dog. If you think a bit differently, maybe it was John that was always a good dog , loyal, fierce, protective, loving.... maybe he was saying goodbye to John a loved and respected associate, and friend. Maybe....

The reason for the "double tap" (as they call it - body first, then the head shot) is because: 1. The head is a smaller target. Even a great marksman can miss in a fast-action assault like Wick performs. 2. Shooting the body (being a bigger target) ensures a less likely chance for the enemy to retailiate with fire, giving more time/opportunity to get a more accurate head shot on the second firing. Here's a question though... Why is the #1 pencil in the world a "No.2" pencil?

"A lot of guys have told me that John Wick 2 is their favorite movie" So, it isn't due to absence of a love interest. His love for his late wife is something that is a cornerstone of his character, a core value of who he is. This second movie takes an excellent premise and a compelling world- one with gold coins, strict rules, and incredible reverence for said lifestyle participants (and the consequences that come with their decisions) and expands upon that world, the rules, and the consequences. The action is more creative, the locations are more exotic, and the consequences are more dire. All of which are things that escalate **even further** in Chapter 3: Parabellum. So glad you're sharing these with all of us! EDIT: "zero shock on the pencil kill" -- until it gets REAL, you mean 😂
