I'm guessing that most of the kids were selected for compliance as much as personality. A few would have been kept in as "troublemakers" and a few might have been smarter than the producers figured, but on the whole they wouldn't want the hassle of unruly children. The kids probably didn't realize that if they stopped doing what the producers said, then they would probably be sent home faster then if they listened to them.

True story: i remember when this show came out. I was in fourth grade and i started going to a charter school where you got to do a lot of performing art: music, acting, visual art, etc. On my bus was a kid an he told some of us on the bus that he's going to be on a reality show called Kid Nation. I thought it sounded super sweet and I started watching the show. I remember asking him if he was ever going to get a gold star but he was on camera probably a total of two times. Im pretty sure the times he was on camera he like fell or something and maybe he got homesick. His name was Brett, wore glasses, think he had a mowhawk. I remember one time on the bus we were talking about religion and Brett said he was an atheist and i had never heard that term before and asked him what holidays atheists celebrate. Got laughed at good lol

Christ was shoe horned into an existing set of pagan holidays. No where does the New Testament say December 25th as his birthday. In fact, when did the Romans collect taxes if that was the time of Christ’s birth? Hell, we didn’t have an accurate calendar until a millennium and few centuries after his alleged birth. Furthermore, if you believe in the Bible, Jeremiah 10 expressly forbids Christmas trees. And then you get into all sorts of messy things about gifts, usury and consumerism depending if you take the Bible as the literal word of God. So, as an atheist, I celebrate Christmas because it really has nothing to do with Christ. BTW, have you ever looked up what Norwegians call Christmas?

I was aware there were people who didnt believe in god but i didnt know there was a name for it. When i asked him "what holidays do atheists celebrate" i genuinely thought atheism was some religion i never heard of because i was a naive child. Over a decade later and i too am an atheist. The reason i got laughed at wasn't because i was a child making fun of another child for his religious preferences rather i got laughed at because i assumed atheism was an organized religion with its own unique holidays and traditions rather than the absence of religion.

After first vid I had to see the whole season. And I did. And honestly - that was the most entertaining reality show I have ever seen. All those kids did great and honestly it had a wholesome vibe to it.

Okay, I’ll play along. If by “wholesome” you mean: filming in New Mexico because at the time they were the only state that didn’t have have child labor laws in place to protect children from around the clock slave labor (ever wonder how/why production could get away with 24/7 filming of kids the way they did?), then sure, we can call that “wholesome”. Or how about a kid drinking bleach because it was in a clear soda container that they thought was water? Or the crew smoking pot with the kids. You know how that was even possible? Because there were absolutely NO parents on-site during filming!! How about all the kids who came back saying that “hooking up” was a common theme while on set? Not exactly sure what was meant by that, but the oldest kid was 15, the youngest was 8 and the average age was 12. Im shocked that no one has come forward talking about sex crimes but it wouldn’t surprise me if, at some point, someone does. I don’t want to burst your “wholesome” cherry or anything, but there was absolutely NOTHING “wholesome” about that show. In fact, NM changed their child labor laws as a result of them filming there. That should speak volumes regarding the dangers of doing shows that were simply that unethical.

My 18year old boyfriend at the time tried to console me by downloading the entire first season of Kid Nation to my video iPod so I could watch it before bed. How would a heated water slide have helped them out? I mean, imagine getting up on a cold morning, stripping down, and taking a trip down a warm water slide. Sure, it feels good for 30 seconds. After that, you're cold AND soaking wet. On another note, Michael revealed on a Reddit AMA that the water pumps had to be preinstalled before the challenge. When they didn't win, they were just covered up with barrels. He would flip the the barrel over and haul water from them anyways.

Um what. Now I know people shipped Derek and Casey, but the show NEVER made it a thing so this comment makes no sense unless you meant for them to make it a humour thing. Also they were step-siblings who met later on in life, so it isn't as dramatic. The weirdness between Justin and Alex in the Wizards of waverly place movie though....

I watched the whole series and really loved it. Every character goes through growth(or pretend to for the gold star) and successfully run a society for 40 days.
