I think we have to look at the lyrics through the time when they were written, during the first half of the 1800’s. No central heating, life expectancy still quite low, years of bad harvest > famine > people leaving the country for America aso. Sweden had just lost Finland to Russia, and I’m sure there were Swedes who were reminiscing the “golden days” during the 1600’s when Sweden was one of the biggest and mightiest countries in Europe. I’m sure Sweden still was a nice country during the 1800’s, but we have to remember that it was a Sweden without all the commodities of today - but also without the greatness of “the old golden days” …

Tbh, sure Finland is a sovereign state but we in Sweden still suffer from that defeat as well as you. They burnt down our entire east coast. Since then Russia is always the direction our statutes point at and gor good reason We founded your state (Kievan Rus) but you will always be our enemy.

Something I like about the anthem is how it seems so at peace, more often these old national anthems will be about rallying the people to reconquer old glory, but Du Gamla just ends up being timeless if you consider the Sweden of today, it tells you how awesome Sweden is to live in; even if it's now a mid-tier regional power best known internationally for furniture, pop music and video games. It's still beautiful! It's all very perfectly Lagom, som man säger, I think other Swedes get it

I like this national anthem a lot (is in my top 10), especially its tune, but its words are nice too. I can actually sing a significant amount of it just from hearing it enough times. And I'm not even actively learning Swedish - though it's a nice language, no disagreement there. I think, the "glorious old times" is probably a reference to the days when Sweden had an empire, when it was a major power player in Europe, the days of Gustavus Adolphus, that era.

I don't think the part about the great old days is necessarily talking about the people's general level of comfort, but of glory, for instance the glory that comes from pushing through the harsh times of the pre-industrial north.
