Totally agree about how the relationship between Furiosa and Immortan Joe being waaay underexplored. That should’ve been the focus of the film I think, about her growing in his ranks and then questioning her place in it to the point of defecting.
@king_supreme11027 ай бұрын
Im confused. Her mission was always to get revenge on Dementus, and get back to the green place. Do you think she actually wanted to be with Immortan Joe? She was there out of necessity. They show that she’s really good at her job, then there’s a time jump (to get to adult Furiosa) and she’s still good at her job. What’s the confusion? She was just very competent and was there for years. That’s how she rose up the ranks. Then she got a bigger reputation by working with Praetorian Jack, who they talk about like a hero.
@fabiosilva96376 ай бұрын
Fury road’s main theme is about redemption not revenge. Her relationship with joe is boss and subordinate. He wanted to kill her because she took his property. She took the wives because she was compassionate. She killed joe because it’s either she kills him or he kills her. That’s it.

I think the movie is awesome and with the Immortan Joe stuff I feel like he had so many wives he didn’t notice her being gone since she was so young, and she didn’t appear as a girl until she was old enough that it would be hard to tell it was the same person
@virginiapicker6 ай бұрын
And by then she had already proven her worth as a driver and a mechanic. A good one. I just got the feeling that even if Immortan Joe had recognized her, he was transactional enough to realize that she was more worth to him as a driver and a hardened fighter than as a wife at that point. And, that ties into something that the history dude told Furiosa when she was young, when they were in the cage together, and he was trying to teach her. He told her she should make herself invaluable in some way. And she did.
@EntrEsprit3 ай бұрын
i got a bit confused on this part. Did he even realize it was the same girl, when she came to him grown up? He (and his crew) surely had to know she either went missing or disguise as a worker. I mean there was no other girls who were fighters or drivers right, so he should've put two and two together?
@rovynsadphire2467 ай бұрын
4:07 I disagree, like you said. She did what she could with the character. She plays the younger version. Of course she's going to be less captivating. She's literally years behind. Young Furiosa is supposed to be less seasoned. She's still young. That's why she delivered the "Remember me?" Line in a question form in this movie. She's a bad ass as a girl but lethal when she becomes a woman.

I dont think people on the interwebz have watched the movie and are simply judgmental just for the heck of it. Furiosa is a cinematic masterpiece that has left me speechless! The time and patience one has to dedicate their life, in making a lifetime work, coupled with an unquenchable thirst to provide sheer awe and cinematic brilliance technically and emotionally, stands out at every single minute throughout the movie. Apocalyptic genres are quite easy to enact, since they require an astute understanding of how humans operate on baseline consciousness. George Miller did a fantastic job at delivering this exact sentiment. I am overall pleased with the aesthetic cinematic treatment compared to its predecessor for continuity and not overdoing with CG. Dramatic pacing and character introduction is given justice with sufficient screen time to develop their story arcs and finale plot. The wasteland is merciless and spares nobody. Flawless execution 10/10.

During the second attempt to film Fury Road around 2010, Furiosa was actually planned to be filmed at the same time. Fury Road would have been released shortly after Furiosa, making it even MORE like Kill Bill vol. 1 & 2. Unfortunately, the studio said, "Hell no!" Miller than tried to have Furiosa released as an animated movie before Fury Road, and that failed to happen as well due to studio negativity.

A fair and balanced review. One thing I would like to pick up on though is the "didn't ask for this" talking point. Now, to clarify, this is not just with Cody here, it's a general thing I've seen for years and years in relation to many movies, games, books, TV shows, etc. Just because no-one asked for something doesn't mean it shouldn't exist. I mean, no-one asked for John Carpenter's The Thing or Halloween, no-one asked for Die Hard, no-one asked for Michael Mann to remake L.A. Takedown, no-one asked for The Terminator, etc, etc, etc, but we were thankful we got them anyway. I understand where the viewpoint is coming from, but "no-one asked for this" should not be considered as a reason for marking a movie down a rating point or two.
@MVPMVE7 ай бұрын
You completely missed his point. He said "nobody asked for this" in relation to remakes/prequels specifically. All the examples you listed were original IPs with a contained story, and if you'll notice, Terminator Dark Fate, The Thing 2011, and Halloween 2018 are all soft reboots or prequels that fall way short of the _original contained IP._ Taking away the mystique by making a movie that is essentially a long exposition dump because we know how it must end (prequel) or know the major beats coming in (remake/reboot) is what nobody is asking for, especially when the result is inferior, and should be dinged for that demerit to the IP.
@TheThird19777 ай бұрын
@@MVPMVE You completely missed my point as I was talking about the concept in general and made a specific point of stating it wasn't just in reference to this video here.
@MVPMVE7 ай бұрын
@@TheThird1977 Ah. Then I guess I just disagree, as Cody and most others disagree as well. Nothing exists in a vaccuum, and if you're expanding an original concept into a prequel or remake, then it will be measured as how it _adds to the original._ Otherwise you'd make _an original concept._ If it is good, it will stand out, like a Days of Future Past. And if it is found lacking or otherwise then the result will be critiqued as whether it was even worth the cost of production and consumer spending. I don't think that's an unfair metric. Movies are expensive to make and expensive to see, and entirely elective on both counts, so remakes/prequels when the original IPs exist and were good will have to "justify" their existence. It is what it is.
@TheThird19777 ай бұрын
@@MVPMVE That's cool; the world would be a dull place if we all agreed. Again, to be clear though, I'm talking about the "nobody asked for this" statement, which, TO ME, is a strange complaint because "no-one asked" for a lot of fantastically-received movies and in reviews it is never mentioned that "nobody asked for this", so, TO ME, saying "nobody asked for this" isn't something that should be brought up only to be a negative in a review.
@MVPMVE7 ай бұрын
@@TheThird1977 I think you might be misunderstanding where I'm coming from. I am not talking about "nobody asked for this" _original movies._ I'm talking about "nobody asked for this" _remakes and prequels._ There's a huge difference. A remake or prequel does not and cannot be unique because it is based on someone else's creation, and a _bad_ remake or sequel means that not only is it riding the coattails of an original concept, but it was worse and detracts from its inspiration by betraying characterization or lore or whatnot. Have you never noticed that the "nobody asked for this" complaint is almost exclusively for the remakes and prequels? Imaginary is a terrible horror movie from earlier this year, but the complaint is not "who asked for this?" because it was an original story. Nobody "asks" for stories, you toss it out there and hope it's good, and if it's not, hey, it was always gonna be a toss up _because_ it is untethered to anything prior. But once you establish a character, a setting, a world, an IP, there will come expectations, and when you fail those with stuff _nobody asked for_ it will be called out. Because nobody asks for their existing IPs to be devalued! I hope I was clearer explaining.

I don't mind a prequel if it helped to understand more the characters that we see in the first film, but this is not the case with this prequel and the only thing we learned was how she lost an arm. The rest - including the revenge - did not actually affect the original film with Dementus and Jack long dead. Furiosa's history was dragged out too long. We learned that she suffered as a child, but we don't need one-third of the film devoted to that and with a different actress playing her. The film was slow at times and even the revenge was a bit disappointing. Furiosa played no part in the fighting and after the battle was won, took forever to hunt Dementus down. As a prequel, what was notably missing - but in my opinion crucial - was the relationship that developed between Furiosa and Immortan Joe and how that changed over time. Furiosa helped him in his victory, and they should be the best of friends. What led Furiosa to become disgruntled later and help the women to escape was not explained, except we know that was what started off the original film. Yes, I also feel the film needs a better story.

Some constructive criticism for you Cody. Some of your mixed and negatives can be explained when you connect the dots. Things are inferred. 1. There is a sizable time jump at the end. For starters, we know that tree had to grow. Idk how much you pay attention to trees, but they take forever to grow. It easily could’ve taken years for it to grow to the size that it did. That’s not to mention the terrible conditions it’s growing in. Secondly, we know the war rig in this movie was destroyed, and that they’ll now have to build the war rig we see in Fury Road. The War Rig in fury road is real grimy looking, compared to the one in Furiosa that looks brand new (because it is). So we can infer that the one in Fury Road took years of wear and tear between the movies. That’s not even taking into account how long it took to build the new war rig. Lastly, Furiosa is not imperator by the end of her movie. And she is by the start of Fury Road. Another indication of a sizable time jump. Also, you’re just thinking too deeply about her relationship with Immortan Joe. She was never invested in that relationship. She worked with him out of necessity, and to gain the recourses to get to the green place. We know this. There was never any fallout between them. She was just biding her time with him. We did not need to see any bonding or falling out. We know why she was there, and why she left. There was never anything else that we needed to know there. And to my knowledge, she never told anyone there her name when she first got there. So we don’t even know that any of them are aware that adult Furiosa is the same person as that little girl. And Dementus didn’t recognize her as an adult until she told him either. Not to mention, Joe’s son (the one she escaped from as a child) started to recognize her as an adult but it then gets brushed off. And then he never says anything else about it, even when he can see her full face. So if he never fully recognizes her, then why would Joe?

I thought the film was good, but “Fury Road” is an action masterpiece and this no matter having its own tone etc will be compared to it. Sadly the film just doesn’t offer enough for me, it’s nice to return to the world, but not much is really added. I would say it’s worth checking out but I was definitely expecting more. 6 out of 10

Another great review and video! Thanks Cody, I recently discovered you and you’ve quickly become one of my top movie KZbinrs 👍🙏 But though I’m with you on the “more sequels and less prequels” line of thought, I’m still glad creators do what the want to do instead of just doing what the audience wants them to do 😊 George Miller is a true artist, and I’m glad he does what he wants and not what we want. Like all creators should 👍 Have a great day 🌞

I thought this movie was darn near perfect. Epic, best dialogue of any of them, IMO, and it’s the perfect prequel to Fury Road. It’s 2 hours and 44 minutes long, but I was almost sorry when it was over.

No they were clearly planning on running away together...and him being tortured to death by Dementus just reignited her vengeance. If you didnt see it that way, that's fine...thats art. I think it was pretty heavily suggested.

My review Background - Furiosa tells the origin story of Furiosa. How she was kidnapped as young kid by a group of deadly desert warriors led by Dementus. And how she grows up and seeks revenge on them to become Furiosa. Dislikes - Plenty. I fundamentally agree with Cody. I too do not like prequels because I never like the idea of taking a story backwards. Its inherently difficult to take a plot backwards because its our natural instinct to know what happens next in a story rather than what happened before. Unless there is a solid connection of the plot to the past. Which is why prequels never work. I mean barring the Hobbit Trilogy I cannot think of any trilogy that has really done well. And that did well mainly because of the grand spectacle and world building of Peter Jackson. I mean look at the Amazon Lord of the Ring's series. Never found its feet. Because they could never really generate any interest in the back story. Jeff Bezos must be still tearing his leftover hair over the 200 million Amazon spent on it. Furiosa suffers from the same fate. The plot never generates any interest. I mean it does not help that this is a plot of very limited ideas. You definitely feel the 2 hrs runtime. And by the end you feel the makers were completely out of ideas and just forced a connection between the 2 movies. Final Thoughts - Furiosa never really gets going after a interesting start. There is just no story to hold the main plot or link it to the source movie. And the screenplay is very ordinary lacking any emotional depth or thrills and even logic. It clearly appears that the writers could not integrate or connect the main plot of the story i.e. the revenge drama with the origins of the Mad Max Fury Road. Hence the entire plot feels cluttered and just lacks any substance. I give Furiosa a 5. This is an ill-conceived Prequel.

Complains movie is more of the same, wears a Friday the 13th part 4 shirt. In all seriousness though, how long do you think it takes a tree to grow from a seed? This didn't go straight into Fury Road. There's a significant time jump and Charlize was Furiosa during the tree scene.

Hopefully, ANOTHER film is forthcoming. Hopefully, Furiosa is a HUGE success on home video -- on D.V.D. and on Blu-ray AND on 4K U.H.D. Furiosa was never going to be better than Fury Road, but it was still an excellent film. Was it too long? Yes. Terrifier 2 was too long as well. I loved both.

Yet another great Wasteland movie from George Miller. He is such a master. And I would think that Furiosa, stuck back in the Citadel, having watched the wives being used as breeding cattle for years, which is what Furiosa was going to be, would be enough incentive to take them with her in her plot to escape. That's what I gathered anyway.

Going to watch this film this weekend, but something about the trailers make it feel cheap compared to Fury Road. Your review seems about what I was expecting. Anyone who says Max was always a side character is kidding themselves including the Red Letter Media guys. He's like Daryl Dixon of WD. Hardy is Dixon in the Walking Dead main show, but Gibson is Dixon in his own series. I liked Fury Road a lot, but the way the movie is shot and told almost makes it seems like a fantasy movie. I do like that, but I still prefer the aesthetic of the Road Warrior. It might be that the film didn't have a large budget and that Fury Road was always Miller's vision of the story, but I like that dirty, gritty style of the character and world compared to the fantasy style of the Fury Road. I guess it kind of makes sense since these stories are like folk tales of the character and now Furiosa.

I loved fury road, but I found furiosa to be disappointing. I love slow burn movies (recently really enjoyed “I saw the TV Glow”), but for a mad max movie with very little dialogue, it needs to have a faster pace. Similar to you, I found Furiosa to be too slow, and I found myself bored. Ironically, I decided to do a double feature, and I watched Furiosa right after I watched “Challengers,” and I was surprised with how much more thrilling Challengers was when compared to Furiosa. I was shocked with how much of a high/rush “Challengers” gave me. I was expecting Furiosa, as the second half of a double feature, to continue that adrenaline rush, but it just felt like a slog. I would never have predicted Challengers to be more of a shot in the arm than Furiosa, but it most definitely was. If you take anything from this comment, please see challengers before it leaves theaters. We need more movies like it

Yeah the part that kind of aggravated me and this movie is was kinda a fan of the Hawking Rictus Erectus in fury road and in this movie they did his character dirty by making him a creep just so Furioso can escape 🙄 especially when they establish that she’s clever you’d think she’d wanna stay and explore and learn about her surroundings and then escape on her own but instead they made that character until like a creep and then she was able to survive on her own by disguising herself for that long I just not buying it but besides that the rest the movie was pretty solid .

A Mad Max movie without vehicles is like a slasher movie without a body count, so glad the first positive insured that. 😉 I didn't know about this movie until reviews started dropping on KZbin, which is slightly better than Fury Road which I didn't know about until the Blu Ray came out, but does sound interesting, so I'll probably check it out at some point. Thank you, Cody.

Jodie Comer presumably was one of the leading casting options for Furiosa. Haven't seen her work yet, but facially ( especially if you add the forehead black paint) she looks like a younger Theron. Anya is pretty good. She's not bad or excellent. Some people might say she was MEDIOCRE! especially when compared to Chris, who steals every scene he is in. Showing Furiosa willingly rip her arm off would have been powerful. Thought they were going to give Anya an emotional scene where she goes from heartbreak to hatred over the death of Praetorian Jack. If anything, they should have had a scene where its like in Terminator 2, where Sarah dreams of kyle comforting her dreams about the feminine side of herself that she lost. Not a dream in Furiosa, but just a moment where she can be feminine for just a little, adding a little more layers to her. Especially adding a little of Jack teaching Furiosa skills.
@BloodeeJacob7 ай бұрын
@SonnyBLightSun “some might say she’s MEDIOCRE”? lol haven’t seen that, who are you referring to? Anyway I kinda fail to see even objectively speaking how she was mediocre executing anything she was given. Charlize did have the advantage of having more dialogue and just being awesome but I’ll agree Comer would’ve been a good pick as well, but again Joy did as well with what the part called for in this entry as anyone could’ve. All caps or not lol
