And I think this could have worked more as a dark comedy, maybe commenting the “teleporting killer” being like people not paying attention. Or something like that That being said, if you wanted to do a more serious approach I think this concept could work if we had a small set of characters that is constantly being stalked so we possibly get that tension when shit hits the fan while keeping the gimmick mostly in tact

I appreciate what they were trying to do in this movie but, as I said out loud while watching the movie last night,” there is a reason we don’t see what Jason and Michael do in between their kills” …..because it boring!! They are mindless killers which means they would do mindless things in their downtime and frankly I’m not interested in watching it. I fast forwarded thru most of the walking scenes. At times, I almost thought this was a parody of Friday the 13th movies because of all the walking as a lot of us always comment on how Jason just slowly walks everywhere he goes. TBH it’s pretty tedious to watch Johnny do it. No thanks. I’m fine leaving that part to the imagination from now on. That being said, the kills are amazing. If someone could just take this movie and recut it without all walking scenes in that it would be tighter and better unfortunately. I realized some of the scenes built tension while you were watching what he was doing but the majority of them was a boring walk about the woods. Watch it for the kills and fast forward thru the rest.

This film was highly disappointing. One great kill cannot save this movie. Extremely SLOW, no character build up, dialogue was horrendous and the acting was below average. Only one other time I wanted to walk out of the theater (Black Christmas 2019)but I kept holding out waiting for something to happen and it never did. Ending was nothing but a waste of time. Entire movie was a waste of time. Just google the Yoga kill and you have all the entertainment this film provided.
@Joakim-Buht-Focker6 ай бұрын
I agree that it was slow, but I love slow movies, personally. Sometimes the dialogue could be a bit simplistic, but I really liked when characters went into monologues. Those were the best written lines. And the experimental part was the ending, to me. Where we are expecting the killer to return, but the killers motivation was just to get the necklace and it wouldn't make sense for him to be close to the car anyway. So when the killer doesn't show up, it was kind of refreshing to me. Subverting expectations. Nor was the lady in the car some evil lady either. It's a very realistic ending to a surreal movie, which is kind of interesting. My biggest gripe was dumb characters, stupid choices. But I think they wanted to catch a bit of that Fr 13th vibe 😅

It seems like, with these experimental films, they never lean in far enough with it. For example, with most slashers, there are those moments of tension when you don't know when the killer is going to pop out. Maybe from the killers perspective, we see it's intentional. They build fear in their victims, so when they do pop out, the victim is more likely to fall when running or run up the stairs when they should run out of the house. They are so scared by that point that they make stupid mistakes.
@elguestoiii73147 ай бұрын
I think if they had split the runtime of seeing the pov of Johnny then switch to the pov of the campers it would have been better. When it goes from no tension to noticeable tension as well as significantly louder sounds of the woods at night and now you can’t hear Johnny walking that was pretty cool.
@politefan81417 ай бұрын
*Minor Spoilers* For the first hour, I was pleasantly surprised and relieved that the whole film wasn't just him walking around, but strangely enough, the last twenty minutes where the killer wasn't featured as much had me the most confused by the time the movie ended. I thought that the beginning mostly worked. The tension comes from not knowing which of the group he is going to target first. There is a nice moment where they lead us to believe that he's going after a woman in the window but then quickly change course. There are also some characters later who put up a decent fight. Some of my disappointments with the first half of the movie were that mask which is not as cool looking as the killer makeup and the fact that we don't see him take trophies. One of the most interesting things about the original slashers is that the killers keep putting their victims on display, which always occurs offscreen. It would have been interesting to see some of that. *Major Spoilers* I was really digging the last act and thought they were going for an homage to the original Friday the 13th but it just ends which soured me on the film. Had they broken their own rules and had the killer appear from nowhere at the end, I would have gone from slightly disappointed by the experience to angry. Figured this film was Canadian because you actually hear one of the characters say "aboot". My suspicion was confirmed by the ending credits song.

Despite not being a massive fan of how this film ended, you are 100% right about the tension. The last 10 minutes or so, although boring and full of dialogue, was the most tense moments in the entire film. The whole time, I was on the edge of my seat, expecting something to happen because you just dont know where Jonny is and what's to come. I think it was very clever on the directors part, any other film with pure dialogue and absolutely nothing happening would be a horrible way to end a film, but it just works in this case, and it honestly gives me a wierd feeling, almost like I'm being manipulated. The last shot of the film was brilliant, in my opinion. Just really wraps together what his true motive was while also leaving you with questions. I truly enjoyed this movie. (Maybe because of my biase and being so pumped for this movie for what feels like years, amd even an average movie would be amazing considering the absolute crap the horror genre dishes out) Probably to an extent that my wife may have thought I was crazy (Its truly a wierd feeling when you are enjoying the yoga scene, just to look over and see your wifes face in her hands trying not to vomit or pass out). From start to finish, even the boring parts, I truly enjoyed every minute. I knew Chris Nash had that dog in him since seeing his short in ABC's of death 2, but man did this movie impress me. Huge factor as well is that Jason from Friday The 13th has been one of my favourite slashers since I was a kid. Rant over. Movie is worth watching, but good advice for advising not to watch it after a long day and being tired. I do agree with that, the ambient nature noise for long periods would be a good soother into a nice nap.

I respectfully don't agree that there wasn't tension in knowing that he was about to kill someone. For example, the 2 girls at the lake. We see him go under water and we are waiting with anticipation as to WHEN he is going to reach the blonde girl in the water and yes, we know he will, but we are waiting for it to happen. Same with all the kills. We know the person is going to get killed, but it's the WHEN that is the most unnerving part, like when the Ranger shot Johnny and we see him lying motionless and we know something is going to happen, but WHEN is the stressful part. Besides, it typical slasher movies, the victim is always isolated and we know they are going to get killed by the killer, but we don't know WHEN. It's the same exact thing here, just from the opposite perspective.

In a Violent Nature has the dubious honor of being only the 2nd movie I have ever walked out of in my entire life. It was only after I got home from the theater a little while ago that I remembered what you said about the interview the director gave. Well, it definitely succeeded in pissing me off. I don't know if I've ever seen a movie so far up its own ass. I stuck around through the yoga kill that everybody's been raving about. Sure, it's creative and gruesome but it's also an infuriating example of "bury your gays" and wholly unearned with how dull and pretentious everything leading up to it had been. I was the only one in the theater so as soon as that kill was over, I checked the time on my phone. When I saw that there was still about half the movie left, that was where I called it quits. I had no desire to continue subjecting myself to something I was already finding insufferable. I think this could have been a brilliant short film. 45 minutes to an hour at most, one shot, stick to the gimmick of following the killer as he stalks and kills the teens. It could have been incredible. But what we got instead was meandering, poorly edited, and far too pleased with itself. It's also the only movie to ever give me motion sickness with that ridiculous spinning shot around the campfire that goes on and on and on... So yeah, great job all around. Oh, and the only other movie I've walked out on was The Woman in Black, which I've since revisited and actually enjoyed. The only reason I walked out on it back then was because I was a kid who couldn't handle horror yet but was too proud to admit it.

The movie wasn't terrible. I enjoyed it enough going into it knowing that it's a Shudder film. (not dragging them) but I also think the minimalism is what worked for me more than probably most people. They didn't have to do a whole lot, or use any crazy music to set a tone... the ambiance of the woods and that stuff made it feel good. and yes, I agree the movie was shot very well. My biggest critiques is some of the acting being pretty bad and the story itself being a little bit lazy with writing, and how the killer looks without a mask. But for the kills.... totally worth it and I wasn't mad I went to the theater to see it either.

This movie is like that Hitchcock story about the bomb under the table. We know what's about to happen, but the characters dont. And i can't believe everyone is just ignoring the ranger part. That is so much more effed up than the yoga one

I love how you acknowledge the experimental nature of the movie. The lack of tension because we're following Johhny? Yes. That's different. But that's the point. I feel like your basic viewers of The Voice might be upset by that. But that's why I loved it: subversion.

I should have listened to you, Cody. I saw this later than I usually see movies and yeah, I dozed off. Not at a main scene and I didn't feel lost but that was a dumb choice. Handsomely directed, clever concept and that kill was gnarly, the others were decent too. I appreciated the tension and a few characters and lore choices. The ending felt odd to me; I kinda see what they were going for but it didn't come together for me. I did get impatient during the movie a few times (Jaws ruined the idea of tension in horror in so many ways). I respected the movie more than I liked it but solid stuff. One of the years bigger surprises for me. 7.5/10

Loved everything but the ending that car ride conversation was more torture than the kills themselves!

Yoga kill was a hall of famer for sure. Never seen anything like that before.

Scared to watch this because this is one of my most anticipated films and I won’t be able to see it till 2 weeks from now lol

Its crazy how you think of a movie and then they make. I always wanted a movie from the killers perspective.

I felt like although there was a lot of walking, there were details added each time that kept me glued to the screen. A couple were too long though for sure

See, about 15 minutes in I realized this wasn’t an artsy film. It’s kind of comedic. That campy dialogue! Even that old fireman mask was Scooby Doo level. It felt like watching a friend play through a horror video game.

I threw up in my mouth a little bit during the yoga kill scene. I had to choke it back down so my date didn’t know I have a weak stomach. It still tasted better than magic spoon.

This film had its theatrical release today in the UK. I enjoyed it, some of the kills were decent & the lack of a score & any type of music actually added to some anxiety inducing scenes even more so imo than if it wasn’t silent.

Having just returned home after the movie, it was clear to me they set out to make a slasher film "wrong". I found the lack of background music or dramatic moments, along with the stillness of some parts, uncomfortable in a good way. I did yawn a good few times though during those pretty but damn slow walking scenes😅 Thank you for the excellent review Cody!

Just got out of this and honestly I felt a lot of tension even from the perspective of the killer! Great video as usual Cody

To me it seems like they should have embraced the concept of the teleporting killer. I think there are so many creative things they could do with that both visually and narratively. Even if they insist on only following the killer. And you get rid of all the boring walking around stuff and inject some suddenness to the killing and keep the pace. Without trying to even inject my own story ideas of how to implement such a thing, I think a creative writer could do something really cool with that as a concept.

Yoga kill and wood splitter kill were mean spirited.. I loved every minute
@MrSirMang3 ай бұрын
Wood splitter kill was pointless. Victim would have felt none of it as he was turned into a paraplegic. That's all I could think during the kill "this would have been so much better had the victim been able to even experience what's happening here." Which totally took me out of the moment.

I loved it!!! Great nod to classic 80’s slashers. Get why it wouldn’t work for some but me and the wife finally saw it in Saturday and we had great fun with it I’ve been watching horror for so long now that ALL tension is gone from slasher viewing experiences now anyway so maybe that’s why I was able to love this so much

I just saw this last night. Holy hell, I loved it! It’s so nice to see someone take a different stylistic approach after seeing Tarot and Strangers. Lol also the kills were BRUTAL and the gore was so GNARLY! I didn’t mind the walking. And Cody was right about Terrifier 3 having its work cut out for it if it wants to top one of the kills in this movie. 😅

Ya I feel like if I go to this and it just shows someone walking around for 90 minutes I’d fall asleep and wake up and it would be over

I believe the people who live in a movie like this should actually scare the killer a bit that way it could be a interesting or intense experience.
@stolbez666legend7 ай бұрын
I'm sure the yoga kill is brutal. One kill I don't think gets enough credit would be from The Furies. The scene where they girl gets her face peeled with the axe just looked brutal and nasty - and relatively realistic considering.

Yes it was the loooong takes too. He kept the camera going for a really long time, even after the action happens. I compared it to like a Terrence Malick or Gus Van Zant slasher film.
