Fully agreed. Just saw it and it was great. Way better than it's trailers. Yes, some of the CGI was annoying, plus it could have been 20 minutes shorter, but aside from these two facts the movie just delivered on all ends: story, score, sound, editing, acting, action choreography...you name it.

Chris Noonan was the director of Babe while George Miller was the producer. George Miller directed Babe: Pig in the City. As well as 4 Mad Max movies, 2 Happy feet movies and Furiosa, he directed Lorenzo's Oil, The Witches of Eastwick, and Three Thousand Years of Longing. He also directed the 4th segment in Twighlight Zone the Movie.

Speaking as a Nolan fan, I feel like the CGI backlash has gotten a little bit out of hand. Yes, there is more noticeable CGI in this film compared to Fury Road but every shot clearly has George Miller's fingerprints all over it, he didn't turn it over to the VFX department and have them work on it by themselves, every bit of it was designed with his approval to bring his vision to life. It doesn't always look real, but it looks unique. And you can't say that about many blockbusters nowadays.

Exactly. It's about how well it fits into the movie, not if you "can tell that it's CGI" and so many of these shots were NEAR indistinguishable from the rest of the style of the movie. And that's what counts. Also quit putting a microscope to trailers and scenes when they should be taken as a whole. And to the naked eye so many of these CGI shots stood up to the live stuff.

The best thing I can say about this movie is that while it is a wildly different film from Fury Road I really like that because at the same time it enhances Fury Road even more. It’s not a “rip off”, it’s a story in the same world as Fury Road, so has some of the same feel as that movie, but it’s in no way a copy. Besides, saying that George Miller is “ripping off” his own work is not really the best way to describe a prequel.

I agree with everything except the runtimes aspect. There are countless examples of long movies being fantastic and making money. Mad Max Fury Road was a "capture lightning in a bottle" situation. It's a movie that revived the franchise after went on hiatus for 30 years so nobody was really anticipating the level of masterpiece that Fury Road achieved. So i can feel the pressure from Miller and his team in making this movie as they were living under a huge shadow for like 9 years in making this movie. And i kinda think Miller himself knew that this movie is never going to be as good as the first but he still wanted to give his best shot. And for the most part, despite some flaws, i still enjoyed the movie from start to finish, i appreciate the effort that the brought to this movie and if i have a free time, i'd absolutely see the movie again someday

It's rare to see a franchise being that has been alive for decades and it's so far being handled by one director. I honestly don't know how the franchise could go if George Miller someday passed away. I couldn't imagine a Mad Max movie without Miller and that shows how special Miller is as an artist when no one could really replicate his style and success with this franchise

I do admit this flick is not on par with Fury Road, does leak visuals of CGI evidently, has some slower scenes but I loved the twist of history of how Furiosa was born as a character and checking a bit more in depth the wasteland workings in a conflict fueled by a crazy biker lord character. And stil despite of the flaws it kept me glued to the screen, and believe me at almost 58 years old not many films can draw my attention to the end in this era of streaming.

Quite a good watch, but I agree it probably tried too hard to connect the dots between the two films rather than writing a good story on its own. Since Furiosa was a fictional character, her background could have focused more on her history as an adult rather than having a third of the film about her as a child and played by a different actress, making the film look a bit disjointed. The jump between the child and a tough fighter was a bit sudden. The revenge was a little too much dragged out at the end, and Furiosa took no part in the fighting and only chased Dementus after the battle was won by Scrotus and Erectus. There was also no clear motive for her helping the women to escape, though of course we know that was the beginning of the next (actually previous) movie.

Every segment in the movie is a complete story- Furiosa being kidnaped, taking control of gas town, etc. It would be out of place to show just *a* battle for the sake of action alone. I may be an outlier here but i haven't seen Fury Road😅. And i went to see this movie purely for Anya Taylor-Joy, whose career I've started following since 2017's Thoroughbreds. All i knew going into this movie was its a wasteland, since ive seen Thunderdome. And that at some point Furiosa loses an arm because its shown on the poster. Anyways, I thought the film was wildly entertaining, and with nothing else to compare it too, it managed to keep me captivated and enthralled (despite the long run time). Maybe i benefited from going in "blind", but hopefully this movie finds a leg of success with returning fans and casual viewers. And im definitely hyped up to finally get around to Fury Road to see what exactly spawned the want/need for Furiousa. 🔥

I agree with you Dan. There were bits of Furiosa's growth that got glossed over that would have helped a lot. It would have done a lot for her character and origin story. Miller could have made this a two-parter, there's so much to cover and it felt too quick towards the end. It felt too split between Furiosa and giving back story to what already happened with Fury Road.

Disappointed. I agree that with Dan that it lacks its own direction. And it makes the fatal error of “softening” the horrors of the Citadel as it was depicted in Fury Road. Almost like it needed to make Dementus the arch villain. I also agree making it more as a two hander outside of the Citadel would have helped (loved the opening sequence with Furiosa’s mom). Seeing so much of the War Boys and Imorten Joe’s crew felt too repetitive.

Unfortunately I have to disagree on the "great score", I found it quite uninspired. Disappointed also by the story, Furiosa was looking for redemption in Fury Road and we don't really get to know why, since she's not doing awful stuff because of Immortan Joe, but going through very tough times because of Dementus. Joe maybe should have been the villain of that movie. And not sure about her motivations in this movie, does she want to get revenge on Dementus or to go back to the Green Place ? Hard to know since she's barely talking. There were also very few lines from the main characters in Fury Road but the chase was non-stop, that does not work as well in this more classical movie in my opinion. On the plus side, the first chase and its atmosphere were very nice, like the others chases and battles. And great cast overall. As a huge fan of Fury Road, I knew Furiosa was not going to be as good and epic, but I think that a character like Furiosa deserved a better origin story, and I was overall disappointed by this movie.

Thanks for the review! Saw Furiosa last night and was so disappointed. It felt like a backstory outline and not a fully cooked script or story. Visually if the stunts were real I couldn’t tell, bc the cgi and artificially sped up scenes in post made everything look so fake. Mad Max, The Road Warrior, and Fury Road remain Masterpieces for me, but I don’t think I’ll rewatch Furiosa for a long time. I think Dementus became more interesting in scenes around the plush bear. I would have been interested to see his full backstory from family man to wasteland leader play out along Furiosa’s eventually overlapping to see how the wasteland could turn one evil vs the other into a hero.

This film had impossible expectations to luve up to with how incredible Fury Road was, and while I still enjoyed Furiosa with tempered expectations I couldnt help but be a little disapointed. All your criticisms are very valid: the pacing is rough due to the structure, the CGI is noticible at some times, and I wish there was more action. Furiosa's lack of dialogue also bothered me since it felt out of character for her conpared to Theron's performance. That being said, its still a strong film with some great action (when it happens), visuals, and strong performances from Anya Taylor Joy, Alyia Browne that carry the torch from Theron's powerhouse portrayal, as well as Chris Hemsworth. Also, the ending is really strong even despite its lack of action.

Furiosa was so good. Honestly, the only problem I had with the movie was that she stopped shaving her head. Also, I feel like they didn't need to recast Furiosa. The Mad Max cameo actually suggests that this movie's ending is only a few months before Fury Road. Though the tree does make it at least a year before Fury Road. So the cameo was a little weird.

Going off the ages of the actresses its about 10 years before Fury Road. Not sure how old young furiosa is supposed to be. But I would guess 8 to 10. It is stated as being 15 years after that the climax of the film is happening. And Charlize was 10 years older than Anya when she filmed Fury Road. So if we want to compress time a bit. Maybe 5 years between Furiosa and Fury Road (ignoring the closing scene).

I just watched the B&W version of Fury Road and WOW!!! It gave me a whole new appreciation for what was already a masterpiece. It's disappointing to hear Furiosa is lacking, though it's understandable considering how long it took Fury Road to finally get made (more time for Miller and co. to work on pre-production, work out glitches, and fine tune every aspect).

Man, Dan and I are totally aligned on this one. The only disagreement we have is that I think Hemsworth has shown tremendous range as Thor over the years, and a lot of that energy is what makes Dementus so great (even more so because the character deliberately plays on Thor, though more the mythological one). I wish I liked this movie more, but it hurts my love of Fury Road and makes so many prequel missteps.

I was actually good with the slower pacing and structure. My biggest issue is like you said when it tries to be Fury Road aka big rig chase scene it can't compare. And that scene had some noticeable greenscreen so it feels much weaker in comparison. Still found the last 20 min absolutely thrilling.

I hope, WB is on board for the next film "The Wasteland". Really like to see, where Miller can take the character in a new storyline. Really enjoyed "Furiosa" as much as "Fury Road", really liked that this new prequel was more toned down with car chases and gave some time to focus on the main character as a whole.

This movie does everything that a good prequel should do. It gives depth and development to a character or movie that we saw before. And this leads into Fury Road so nicely that I don’t think I’m going to ever watch them on their own again. Furiosa is like the first two acts and Fury Road is the explosive third act action sequence that resolves everything.

I saw this yesterday (May 23) and I don't know why but something didn't click for me. I loved Fury Road, to be clear, so I actually had high hopes for this, but something felt off. I think it falls into the "Rogue One" trap of telling a story that's best left to the imagination. Not that bad, as R1 has logic leaps I still don't understand. Here I think I'm just underwhelmed. I will admit though that the last shot of Chris Hemsworth's character gave me shivers in a good way.

I loved this movie. I can see how some would be disappointed by the lack of high-octane action compared to the first movie. But I was transported to another place. Frankly, this is what I wanted (and didn't get) out of the Dune movies. A beautiful aesthetic, great world-building. But unlike with Dune, I was actually pretty invested in the characters.

4:20 i dont agree Dan, the space where Fury Road take's place, is Furiosa's place, even during Fury Road, it wasnt a mad max movie, it was a Furiosa movie. So connecting the dots in this prequel was imperative, it's what prequel does, but it also expands the universe. We should have seen more of the green place tho but maybe the are saving that for a Theron's Furiosa sequel? please? anybody??

I think it's interesting you say they should have fleshed out Jack and Furiosa's relationship, when this movie is making a point to mirror Max and Jack's interactions with Furiosa as if to underscore that the filmmakers are saying Max and Furiosa were in the same type of relationship.

Surprised Dan didn't enjoy this more. Was every bit as good as Fury Road for me, albeit while telling a much larger operatic story. Every frame felt like a masterclass in film making. Anya, Hemsworth, child Furiosa actress and the other Praetor were all absolutely sublime. Miller, in my opinion, is one of the last true visionaries.

I think you nailed it. I agree, the film was best when it was doing more its own thing. The war rig scene seemed unnecessary and not as good as Fury Road. And now I realize that might be because of the different cinematographer. Interesting. I also agree that it was missing some focus.

I'm a mad max superfan (all movies)....This movie was so disappointing for me (NUX would have been a better movie)....the only part I liked was the mad max easter egg when it showed him on the cliff....other than that the movie was corny. Furiosa was like a Tubi movie and it's a lot of wasted cgi effects in it....It wasn't enough screen time for furiosa and her mentor...I felt hardly anything when he died...if we knew more about him it would have helped....and using Dementis as live fertilizer at the end of the movie is absolutely ridiculous. 😂

When you opened about seeing the movie, I almost immediately bailed. But then you began the review and boy was it apparently insightful, thoughtful, and in equal measure laudatory and critical without being judgmental or unintelligent. I reserve my judgement until I see the film, which I’ll now do, you influencer, you. And I agree. Fury Road is a once in a century kinetic masterpiece and Theron was astounding. Her brazen life from the horrors and exhilaration of her own family tragedy (a mother every it of Warrior as Furiosa) to best of both genders’ androgynous beauty to acting and physical prowess that was razor sharp, she’s the shit. Little Miss Horse-eyes ain’t gonna cut it.

Agree with a lot of your review but you were even still a tad generous. It's disappointing, unfocused and WAY too long. It drags and the ending just kind of peters out. I saw it an advanced screening, packed IMAX theater with people dressed up and really excited for it. No one made a peep except for the occasional sounds of snoring (no joke). Maybe 5 people clapped when it ended. I'm thinking the law of high expectations hurts it. It's not all bad like you said. The action scenes still work and I think it looks great despite the cgi but I just can't recommend it to anyone. I think it'll open big then drop like a stone on word of mouth.
