Watch what happens when an entitled ICE car owner blocks an EV charging bay and gets called out. The situation quickly exploded into a case of road rage, with the entitled driver driving towards me and then gesticulating angrily before driving off.
This video explores how calling out deliberate bad behaviour can quickly escalate and put people in real danger. Do you agree that this driver is a menace? Do you think I should have left it alone? Should this be reported to the police?
Whether you're a Tesla enthusiast, aspiring EV owner, or simply interested in all things EV, this video will show you the reality of life as an EV driver.

If all the Superchargers had been packed and he blocked, what should be the last available one...I'd say you'd be right to call him out. But seeing as there were plenty of open chargers, and it appeared he was in the car, hadn't parked, and left, I wonder if you were right here. Now, his reaction of using abusive language was uncalled for, and indeed, driving at you was uncalled for, but it didn't look like a serious attempt. In court, it could be argued that he mistakenly put the car into forward gear when he meant to be in reverse. But we also didn't get to hear what you actually said. Overall, I'd say you should have just parked at a charger and left it alone.

@@hivewatch , I didn't see any signage expressly reserving those bays for EVs, so he's technically correct. (Unless there is some UK law regarding parking bays with EV charging stations that I am unaware of. Is it an ahole move to block them? Sure, but that doesn't mean he's not correct that he can park there. And again, he was sitting IN his car. Typically, someone doesn't just park and sit in their car for no reason. Could he be a bored a-hole who wanted to sit and block EV charging and generate EXACTLY this interaction? Of course, he could. But the best way to deal with that is to NOT react to him. He'll get bored of doing it. But it's just as possible from what I saw that he was entering or exiting the car park, noticed he needed to do something that is not advisable to do while operating a moving vehicle, like operating a mobile device, for example, and pulled into the bay for a bit. I get the point the OP is trying to make with this video, and I agree. But the confrontation was unnecessary. He could have discretely filmed the guy from his car and still made that point.

@@nathanwatson7280 - the UK regulations state it's for the council to issue updated Traffic Regulation Orders to restrict the parking including put up signage to advise of the restictions, if this is a public parking area (as a fair few retail outlet car parks are). If this is a private car park that has sold part of the bays to a charging company, then they need to put up signs notifying any usage restrictions and any enforncement mechanisms (e.g. penalty notices). There is no automatic limitations to charging bays in the UK, to allow for flexibility in usage. However, this appears to be a new charging area within a retail outlet car park and from the video it looks like restriction notices have not been put up. Hence either the parking restrictions are not in use yet or the bays could well be open to all not just those charging - with parking/charging use on a first come first served basis. The latter makes sense in a retail car park setting, which may get busy at times so requires the full parking capacity on occasions, at other less busy times the bays are doubling up as charging bays to increase the revenue from the car park and provide a local charging service (especially for those without the ability to home charge). Particularly, as this area appears to be for overflow/local charging capacity in Rugby, as there is a large dedicated transit style charging area nearby, based on Dave's other videos. Mixed usage lowers the management cost of the car park (especially if its a free car park), and benefits EV drivers (of which I'm one) as they also don't have to leave the charging bays once charged either (although it's polite to do so, when the car park is not jammed packed). There are more 'opportunistic' destination charging areas like this appearing across the UK, which is a good thing for EV's as charging capacity increases to a level where it's becoming just a readily available ability everywhere. Hopefully, people will respect the bay's additional function at busy times and politely ceed the space to those needing to charge. But to get this level of well mannered respect it also need to be given by us EV drivers so as not put people's noses out of joint as this is self-defeating, doesn't help EV adoption and gives ammo to those seeking to spread anti-EV rhetoric. It was probable the car's occupants just stopped in an out of the way spot (end of the car park) to grab a coffee/bite to eat, and watch the traffic go by (the spot they choose appears to have a good view over the entry roundabout). Afterall if their aim was to 'block usage' to send a message it was a pointless attempt given the number of available empty charging spaces. It is likely the driver was shocked at someone pestering them when it is likely they were not seeking to do anything wrong, they may have been ill mannered on Dave's approach but likewise Dave was in approaching them in the first place. The occupants returning to film is likely prompted by being percieved as being harrassed, chased away and then reflecting on it, deciding to return to get a record of the event or may have even done so after contacting the car park owner. In short, it's best not to assume preferrential treatment or automatic rights to a charge bay unless such is explicitly notified/sign-posted, such signs often restrict both the EV driver's ability to stay-on post charge as well as non-EV drivers use of the bay.
@stevew9957

It's about educating people that parking in any charging spot and not charging is unacceptable behaviour. That applies equally to EV's. He'd soon kick off if EV's parked at his chosen garage and blocked all the pumps so he couldn't fill up yet thinks nothing of blocking an EV charger. I appreciate that there were plenty of empty bays but if he is never challenged he will continue to park there, and other charging spaces he finds. @@TeslaDo_d - this is the UK, solicitors don't have the same level of sway as lawyers have in other countries. Dave may or may not be in the right here, there are car parks in the UK where the bays are mixed usage (parking or charging) without restrictions, this reflects the increased level of roll out of destination charging becoming available in the UK and is a positive development; normalising usage and taking away the anti-EV argument of preferential treatment and reduction in parking due to EVs. It seems Tesla's Public Charging network (which is different to the restricted Tesla only Supercharger network) is working with councils to increase availability of destination charging at local sites to enable a form of lower cost community charging that helps EV adoption in the 20% without access to home or work charging. This also helps councils with another revenue stream from those charging. Some councils are placing these in retail and council office car parks whilst not explicitly dedicating the bays to charging-only to prevent local legislation/planning issues and complaints at reducing parking space availability from blocking their deployment.
@TeslaDo_d
@TeslaDo_d 6 күн бұрын
@@GruffSillyGoat I understand...the fire lane and handicap spots were already taken. This is the mentality that society must overcome. A genuine revenue source is available to a vendor and yet it may somehow be considered okay to block the storefront, because there are other doorways available. If those were Costco gas pumps in those locations and I parked my EGO mower there, I'm sure the gassers would be defending me for my right to do so, and the owner of the pump would not care in the least. Sorry buddy, but this is non-sense in any country. My grocery store has a canopy over the cart corral. I think my Tesla might just fit on a rainy day....nothing says I can't do it. No law against it. @@TeslaDo_d - You may see it as nonsense but it works for the UK, and elsewhere that similar civil approach is used. In the UK, we are well versed as using the persuasion of pervasive politeness to prevent the muppets who block disabled bays; and it's always best to have public opinion on your side in this respect. Plus, best not to use similar false equivalence examples that they those on the anti-EV side so love to use, this is not disabled/services bays being discussed. The role of mixed-usage parking (charging and parking) is beneficial as it speeds up the rollout of charging, supporting those without home/work charging to adopt EVs earlier (voiding one of the leading complaints from the anti-EV crowd in the UK). It's understandable that in the early days of EV adoption (as was the case in the UK a few years ago) or on key high volume routes that charging bays are reserved for charging only (even EVs cannot park in them once charged). However, eventually the majority of parking locations will offer a level of destination charging therefore mixed-usage makes sense as it's just a parking space that you can happen to charge-in. As mixed-usage parking speeds up the adoption, by removing red tape and delays, and normalises EVs then we're all the better for it. But there will always be a few entitled muppets who think they can do what they want. However, we need to avoid giving these self-important fools a platform or cause to normalise their behaviour, hence if a bay is a mixed-use one and there are other charging bays available then it's it not helpful (in the UK sense) to use this as a cause celebre (particularly as it doesn't support the point being made). The UK gutter press have used such before to forward their anti-EV stance, let's hope this isn't one of those occasions - Dave is a bit of a prime target here being an EV YT content creator. In short best not to feed the troll.

As an EV driver it isn’t uncommon to discover this happening however when looking at the video the bays don’t seem to be marked in any way. We can see the V4 chargers but I suspect some EV owners would not spot them let alone ICE drivers. We didn’t hear the conversation but is there not a chance they just parked in what appeared to be extra wide bays? I notice at Aldi locally the bays with charging posts are not marked up or restricted so anyone can use them. Ideally the CPO should insist that the land owner enforce parking restrictions. Unless they are occupying the last bay I think it’s best to not confront, unless this was more about getting click bait footage that l can see you have monetised.

Councils (this seems to be a council run car park, looking online) seem to be deploying Tesla's public charging network in places to drive up local charging support (offering cheaper rates for those without home/work charging). However, these tend to be mixed use parking/charging bays on a first come first served basis, rather than modifying traffic regulation orders to restrict the parking. In a way this is a positive sign for EVs are it's increasing access and normalising the role of parking bays as additionally supporting charging; which can only accelerate the roll out of destination and community charging. It also means there is less ammo for those anti-EV to make noise about loosing access to parking due to EVs. Hopefully, being the UK most people will be courteous and ceed bays to those needing to charge, if other parking bays are available but it requires EV owners to likewise be polite in asking and only doing so when appropriate.

The is no restrictive signage as such shwon in the video so these are not (yet) dedicated charging bays, which it why some of the EVs are also in them parked without being plugged in. Given that mixed use charging/parking is used in the UK, particularly at destination chargers, it's best not to assume bays are reserved for charging only, as such has to be sign-posted explicitly in the UK. If this was signed and a council/train operator owned car park, fixed penalty notices could be issued with legal enforcement possible. If private only a psuedo-penalty, charge for service can be issued. However, this looks like a free retail outlet style car park, so most likely is intended for mixed use. Hence it's bad manners at best, although given the number of charging spaces available this isn't even likely in this case, to park in these bays as it prevents local charging particularly by those without the ability to charge at home/work (which in part these community orientated locations seek to support, particular if a council run retail car park).

Something similar happened to me last weekend in a Tesco car park. Lots of empty bays but a guy parked his car in a charging spot right in front of me, deliberately going there. When I pointed that he parked with a combustion car there and that's an EV bay he went out of the car "f.... k you" and entered the store. He stayed there a good time of 20 minutes. At his return he looked at me very proud and provocative. Pure idiocy.... I wrote to Tesco describing the situation but Tesco do nothing about this. There are so many idiots with empty souls that need to feel important and they fill their lack of attention and respect with haters for things.... Feel sorry for them.

I often see ICE cars parked at the Tesla open-to-all and Chargeplace Scotland chargers in Fort William. This area is for buses, HGVs, and charging - not for cars other than those charging. Unfortunately, two or three spare bays which are obviously intended for cars waiting for a turn on the chargers do not have an EV logo painted on them. One of these spaces is at the right hand end of the Tesla chargers - the ideal space for me to choose in order to charge my Kona without occupying two Tesla bays. It really would help if they were marked 'EV only'. These spaces are the closest to the bus and rail stations and back of Morrison's - car parking is a longer walk. I used to challenge drivers with no blue badge parked in disabled spaces at my local supermarket. One day an engineer had parked his van in the space while in the store to fix a fridge. There were plenty ordinary spaces available, not much further away. I asked him to move, and he aggressively refused. I spoke to the duty store manager who was stood beside him, but he clearly did not want to say anything negative to the guy fixing a fault in the shop. So I said I would take a photo, wait a while, and e-mail it to his company. I did. I later got a reply assuring me there was no possibility of this happening again, and implying that he had been sacked. I didn't feel any regret. I'm not disabled, but I used to take my late mother shopping there, who did have a blue badge, and who really couldn't walk far.

I wonder how the ice drivers would feel if EVs were parked blocking all the petrol,pumps? When I lived in Hawaii, they made a law that only 1 motorcycle could park in a parking stall. Soon after early in the morning, an organised group of motorcycle clubs rode into town and took every parking place, then police aligned with their cause ticked all the cars that parked between them. The law was quickly rescinded.

I would have opened with "Hi, do you have a problem with the car?" Giving him the chance to make his excuses and leave without a confrontation. Worst I have had - arrived to find the only bay where a car wasnt charging, blocked by an ICE car - left empty with the engine running. When I started taking photos of it, the owner rushed out of the Costa Coffee and got aggressive - would not admit that leaving a car unattended with the engine running is an offence - or that there was a problem ignoring the free parking spaces to park in a charging bay; as it was several feet (no more), closer to the Costa. I gave him a choice - I could post the clip on YT - calling him an ignorant twat (I am 6ft 6 and also not a 6 stone weakling), or I could call the police and report him for the traffic offences - he went to his car and drove off.

Im not sure he blocked a charger on purpose. I just think he bought a coffee and chose those bays so he could watch the coming and goings, and they are the best spaces. I just think him being challenged upset him and he didnt like it. Upset people do act odd unfortunately. Well hopefully he will put this matter behind him and not block chargers in the future. Although there will always be people who once challenged may do it more often. But I guess if we are challenging people for blocking chargers then we probably should include the people blocking the wrong bay on Tesla sites open to all. Tesla could help here by putting the bay number (1A,1B) on the floor of the space as many new people probably genuinely don't know which bay they should be using.

I think you’re overthinking this. To be honest I imagine the man man in that video in question probably didn’t realise it was an EV bay given the age of him and his passenger. I wonder if the man was actually responding to your use of a camera. There are many people who misunderstand privacy laws and seem to think that you cannot film them in a public place. The first shots you showed had the man sitting in the car drinking something, possibly he was 'unaware' of his blocking action. He would have got very defensive after you spoke to him , hence his aggressive drive off. It would also explain the 'getting his own back' by using his camera to film you. I had a similar situation when I remonstrated with a driver who was parked on the footpath near to a school, a common problem for which the Traffic Wardens often attend. When I took a photo of the vehicle to send to the Traffic Wardens as evidence, the man got very abusive and launched into a tirade about 'Human Rights, and EU laws on privacy, etc.

There is a second possible explaination :- Did you accidentally come upon a secret meeeting , was it a lunchtime tryst and the man thought you were a 'private eye' or similar? You may be surprised to know just how many such 'meetings' take place in public car parks at all hours.

This is a common occurrence, some people just want to argue the fact they can park wherever they want. You can’t stop people parking in charging spaces . Confronting the man is exactly what he wanted. Should have totally ignored him as if was charging. That would have frustrated him more and his partner would have looked even more embarrassed than she was. Typical Ken and Karen.😂😂

As a ev driver I have experienced lots of ICE cars parked in charging stations even when there are plenty of free parking spots available, at my local train station there are six 7kw chargers and the chargers are placed close to the station door so I suspect it is just laziness with ICE drivers not wanting to walk a extra 20 metres. Can’t wait till they need charger and are blocked 😂😂

Some people just thrive on confrontation. It is possible he knew who you are and wanted to wind you up. It’s also possible he was hoping you’d say or do something on camera. Not worth opening yourself off to potential retribution Dave. If there had been low availablity of chargers and you needed access fair enough, but you don’t want to be the headline in tomorrow’s papers cos some head case stuck a knife in you. I don’t think there is anything you can do to educate these idiots and they are challenged less and less. Heard from someone who works at one of the big supermarkets they have got shoplifters just filling trollies and walking out. They have been told not to challenge them for their own safety. We will be back living in the Wild West if this continues. On a separate note I do smile when all these people reckon their ice cars are good for a million miles and they will never buy an EV. No problem then is there! Or they say they only ever pay 2 grand for a car and everyone that buys a new car is an idiot. They don’t seem to understand that at some point someone bought that 2 grand car from new. I fear we still have a way to go before we reach ‘peak numpty’ unfortunately.

I was at Trentham Gardens on Saturday, and despite the place being crowded with shoppers, the Tesla spaces were only being used by charging EVs. There were 15 bays free when I arrived around 3pm, though it got a bit busier over the following 20 mins while I charged. Even the V4 chargers were a challenge for an EV9 to use. The Kia that pulled in next to me was so huge that the owner struggled to get the cable all the way around the back to their charge port on the rear offside. This was made harder thanks to the citing of the V4s to the back right of each charging bay, and not perfectly in the middle of the bays at the back as some other V4 locations have them. I think this was necessary due to the bays not being deep enough to site the V4 chargers at the back of the bays. That Kia would definitely have been sticking out into the service road if it had not been able to reverse past the V4 charger.

I suspect he parked there, not to spite EV drivers, but because it was the nearest place in that carpark to the McDonalds opposite, especially as his passenger appears to be drinking a McDonalds coffee. As there were plenty of free EV charging spots, he probably thought why not, especially as we won't be there very long. Given that there were so many free EV charging spots available and that no EV driver was being denied the chance to charge, I would have said nothing. That's probably why you got a bad reaction. He probably thought you were just a job's worth. I would only have taped on the window if all other charging spaces were full with charging EVs and you wanted to charge your vehicle. My advice to you is to pick your fights wisely and be reasonable at all times.

You put a camera in this guys face and then say, why are you parked here? What were YOU trying to achieve? Filming people without permission is at the very least rude. By your own statement, there were plenty of spaces available both for EVs and real cars so who gave you the right to challenge his parking when it clearly didn't affect you. Banging on someone's window, camera in hand can be seen as aggressive. EVangelists tend to come across as holier than thou, mainly because of the forcing of an unrealistic model of transport on everyone when one size doesn't fit all. They have their place, they also have their problems. Personally, on the whole, I'm ambivalent about them. It would not fit me because I have nowhere to charge. The nearest public chargers are nearly 2 miles away and spending hours waiting there for a couple of hundred miles of range, is a total waste when 5mins or less gets me around 600 miles of range FOR ROUGHLY THE SAME COST! Also, I'd have to buy a new car to replace my 10yr old one so the economics just don't add up either. EVs are great in tos and cities so long as the charging infrastructure is there, but in rural communities like mine not so much. People in the village do have them and they run cables across the pavement to charge creating a trip hazard. (How is that responsible?) I think it should be live and let live. The EV is no more ecologically sound than an ICE car and they should be able to exist side by side without government dictats.
