This would make a great dresser for a baby’s room. From there it will grow with the baby till they leave home. Simply classic. Hardware and buttons can make or break a piece.

As you stated that “ Batwing” drawer handles have been around since the decade of the SEVENTIES, you are correct. However, Colonial furniture makers from the era of William and Mary, Queen Anne , and Chippandale furniture all have used Batwing pulls. It’s not a “ decade” thing; it’s a “ centuries” thing covering the 17 th century to present, specifically starting in 1620.

The set screw on the collar backs off because you’re using an impact driver to drill. The impact that makes it good at screwing faster is vibrating the drill bit.
@melissagraham6180

Using the impact drill, you can also get the opposite effect where the collar screws grind into the bit and is almost impossible to remove.

Thank you for showing what ‘bleed through’ looks like! There’s often a lot of steps taken to PREVENT things from happening, but not much to show what you’re trying to prevent. I hope that makes sense. Can you make a video or ‘series’ of what exactly to prevent? There’s a lot of jargon like ‘wet edge’ or ‘texture’, ‘cured’ , things like that. It might take sacrificing pieces or some wood to explain things, but it’d be super helpful 💛💛💛

I say painted if you want to, but if the old finish is needing to be refreshed in any case then maybe you could send it down and just put a really natural wax finish on it so it looks fresh and clean, but also shows the character of the old piece. That being said, paint is protective for old wood. Our ancestors liked paint and used paint. I would not feel guilty about using paint in spite of some of the people that come on these shows and criticize it. It is no longer 1880 and we don’t have to play by 1880 rules or decor styles. Maybe they would have preferred paint if they would’ve had the option for that piece of furniture. You don’t know nobody does..

Lauren, amazing work! You didn’t do the slanted cut at bottom of the feet. They look too square. Glad you used the red wood for the base. Those knobs do not go with that dresser. You just repurposed the knobs from the previous set that wasn’t selling because of the knobs. Wish you would have given more thought to the design of the piece.

Hey Lauren, great job but it’s one thing that I notice. You always say “flip furniture” even when you keep it for yourself. I am a furniture artist as well so for the sake of others learning flipping is when you get a piece and make it over and sale it. If you keep it it’s not a flip. What Is Furniture Flipping? Furniture flipping is purchasing used pieces of furniture to resell for a profit. 🎉🎉

What can i say? Not being able to read tape measure! let's discuss wood and it's properties., just because you go out and buy hardwood I.E (RED OAK) doesn't make it any better for building bases. I've built hundreds of base using everything from red oak down to pine. What you're looking for in the wood you chose is that the grain is straight and the edges are true and the edges and face are 90 degrees to each other. what you also need to look at is moisture content any wood sold from any big box store will have a moisture content of 20% . That number is way too high to building anything related to furniture. Your lumber ahould be around 9% or lower in moisture. You should also be using a joiner to square up the lumbers edges. Don't assume that the edges are square! square . does not exsist! You have to create square by joining your lumber before you begin working with it. So lets discuss wood and glue. The end grain of any board is like a bunch of straws all tied together, so if you're going to glue end grain to long grain . You should put on a very thin layer of glue on your end grain and allow it to dry completely, Then you can put your next layer of glue attach your two boards together. It makes no difference if you're using screws or nails they act as clamps holding the two boards together till the glue dries. The glue gives the joint all it's strength. This knowledge and over 20 yrs in this trade is what makes an antique furniture restorer. I share this knowledge because i feel that it is important to know these things. NOT to pick on lauren but to point out things that need to address. It's important to understand the repair/rebuild process as well as the finishing process..
