My friend, let me be clear: I've watched the Hi, Ren video dozens of times, experienced emotions shared with dozens of reactors, maybe 100+ and I can only state, simply, that yours is the best, most acknowledging and understanding of all of them. Your perceptions and conclusions bear weight with me, and I shed tears alongside you, carried to the truth north of emotions that erupt, unexpectedly, from the viewing and listening (for it shares those important moments of truth ) of this performance, this art created by a very special individual who, and I mean this, has affected my life with his song. And now, I have taken to my breast your reaction, and it rendered me to tears, much as he did you. You have contributed to me, and I wish to contribute to you, if only by subscribing and liking, as a brother human being. Be strong, I love you for who you are.

Why's it have to be ok only if he's not religious? If he were, would it make a difference? I've seen people tear up and choke up at the end of this video precisely because the light is better than darkness. The most hardcore react the hardest because they know deep down that this kind of hope can only come from our beautiful one God Yahweh! He's the voice that loosens the noose on the rope. He's Hope because of His son Jesus, who suffered all the same things you suffer and intercedes for you before God.

Great, emotional reaction. Ren gave a Twitch talk about this song and said that (paraphrased) he's not necessarily religious and doesn't identify himself as a Christian, Buddhist or Muslim, but he's interested in the stories that human beings use to explain the divine. I kind of got that from the song and video, when the flickering lights of the "shadow Ren" are mixed in with the triumphant falsetto singing at the end.

Such an insightful and honest reaction! I'm an agnostic atheist myself. For those who don't know, it just means I don't believe in gods, and I don't pretend to know either. The religious bits did cause a knee-jerk reaction in me the first time. Like you I took it to be symbolic and just hoped I was right as I knew I couldn't stop. So nice to hear someone else appreciate the "gods" bit at the end too. Have yet to hear anyone else even mention it. From damn near the start you can feel the rawness of his performance, how personal and genuine it is. It just hits like a ton of bricks. I had to pause it 3 times to deal with all the face leaks since it apparently demolished a damn somewhere in me. Regarding reacting to music you already know... If there are any songs you want to share I think you should. I know you wouldn't try to pretend you had not heard it and would probably disclaimer the shit out of it just in case as well. There's just so much music in the world that without someone to introduce it, we can go years without hearing something that we would love. Ren, VoicePlay, Geoff Castellucci, Home Free, Chinchilla, Sam Tompkins, The Warning, Dorothy, Sleep Token, Falling in Reverse... to name just a few from this past year that I found thanks to reactors like you. I can't wait to see what gems you might bring into my life.💜

About the "devil" at the end: Ren explains it after very well. The brighter the light shone, the darker the shadow it projects. So as soon as Ren, in the song threatens the shadow that he will kill it, the shadow goes: "oh yeah?! well you can't kill me 'cause I'm eternal and immortal. I'm the Devil, b###h!" And then, Ren responds with "I am also eternal. I am Hope." Basically, the inner battle escalated to biblical proportions.

It's also powerful when the first time Ren stares in the camera, he delivers the Hope line. "I want to speak to you directly, because I only need one name for people to recognize me, you narcissitic b###h."

I will say. I've watched at least 5 reviews of this song a day for the last few weeks. I've taken notes and loved to see the different reactions to all the different pieces. As someone who's attempted suicide, and later lost a brother to suicide... I know both sides of the equation. I'm also a massive empath and feel what you're feeling. YOU HAVE BEEN THE MOST GENUINE and real reactor I've seen. Thank you for listening so closely, and being willing to be open to your truth. Those who have this what I call "ugly voice" inside understand the impact it has. I didn't realize until this came out and reactors posted videos that there are humans that DON'T have this ugly voice... But to know that there are people that do, helps those of us trying to live with it silence it some. OR even just understand what it is and be like "oh, hush. I've heard this song over a hundred times now, many from reactions, and you took me straight back to the feelings I experienced upon encountering it for the first time. I'm an apostate, too, for what sounds like some similar reasons, and I'll tell you my take. For me, this song describes the intensity of internal experience that necessitated the creation of gods in human stories. Ren has a great deal of religious symbology in some of his music but, as a lover of archetypal human stories, it's easy for me to digest all of it through those frames. He has a brilliant song called Genesis that, for me, references my own love of that particular set of stories as reflective of the capriciousness/arbitrary wrath of that god. You mentioned looking into more rap. Ren is a good one for that. Genesis, Ocean, Insomnia, Power, all brilliant, clear, meaningful. Usually, he pins the lyrics as a comment.

Welcome to the Ren rabbit hole - it's vast and amazing. Ren is a one off creative genius. You asked if what he was talking about was true - others will fill you in more than I can but yes it is true. Ren was signed by Sony many years ago but got ill and his illness got so bad they dropped him. He was misdiagnosed for several years and was put on many pills and treatments which did nothing until he was finally diagnosed correctly with Lyme disease. He had stem cell treatment and is still getting treated for symptoms as we speak in Canada. He does it all - sings, raps, plays several instruments and as well as his solo stuff, is also part of a band called The Big Push and their stuff is fantastic too. He truly can't be pigeon hold into a genre because he can and does do them all it seems. I'll leave it to others to recommend where you go next with Ren (and the Big Push) but generally, pick any song and it'll be a banger.

Subscribed!! - loved your honest reaction, this is my first time here - your music background is similar to mine (Alice, Guns, Queen...) - just like me, you also roll your eyes everytime it smells to religion. Love it! 😅 Time to know you from now on. You've got a beautiful voice! Hope somebody already told you to react to The tail of Jenny and Screech (full version, 13 minutes). It's worth it, believe me! Regards from Portugal 🇵🇹

Wow... First time I hear someone other than me voice that as I would... "Nah man, if you tried suicide and survived, you failed." That resonates deeply even though it's dark and grim and not suitable to most people out there. Not that I've ever tried, but I've thought alot about it and I've known people who did it, people close to me, and I've always thought: you fucked up at the easy way out... I will walk the hard way all the way! I will break those barriers, those standards, all those shits that life can throw at me I will face 'em and never back down. No matter how hard it can get, I will prevail. No matter how down I can be, I will rise and take a step forward. Failing is just a step to success. We are all flawed, and we all can surpass our limits. As long as there's a will, there's a way.

What a phenominal reaction. You caught on to the meaning of the song so much faster than most others do, which probably highlights the fact you can relate to it as well. I'm in the same boat, no judgements here. Love your insights and the honesty in your resction. Subbed for sure.

I think rather than just have to get on with it . Rens saying that although you have vast challenges, that you can't just force your way through. You have to accept some stuff, challenge some stuff and learn to dance in the chaos. I think to a certain extent we have to accept being a victim sometimes and not beat ourselves up about not being strong, brave, intelligent , normal etc and the way to learn to dance through the chaos, is by learning about yourself, and finding the things you have to accept, the things you can change and the things that you can move away from. It's learning the steps, being a student of yourself.

As a pagan, I particularly enjoyed that bit which you called "god talk" because when you finally understand what all religions share and how they each have their own description of the same damn truths, then you realize this is none other than insightful tying-in of "archetypes" that shows just how well-read Ren is; that he can acknowledge that "the adversary", Shaïtan, Temptation, Lies (Truth in a blender is even more pernicious because it's still bits of truth!) And all the other archetypes are pretty-much names for our own shadow selves... Mwah *chef's kiss* I used to be just like you: knee-jerk adverse reaction to any form of god-talk. I call that period of my life my Atheist Adolescence. I've grown through it now, see that everybody's saying the same thing (more or less) using their own metaphors and perspectives. When you really dig into what they're trying to say you will begin to see commonalities across all humanity (I'm alluding the the elusive "perennial philosophy"). I hope you find peace within yourself to be able to let any "god talk" wash through you and no longer be jolted into mental rigidity. ❤ Also, because I love it so much: have you mulled-over that line "Not your place to be biting off the hand that feeds me"? I LOVE the underlying contradiction: here is some self-aggrandized 'epitome of the shadow' scolding Ren for having bitten-off the hand which feeds him? Like he NEEDS to be fed? Like a caged animal. Like a dependent weakling. Makes me kind of want to say to Shadow Ren "That's right, your fucking god complex leaks out of you". 😂

Sick Boi is a continuation to the story and a good intro to rap for you. Ren was misdiagnosed for years. Power is a prelude to his story. If you like the bard-core, then the Jenny/Schreech/Violet tales. Loosing It is a fun rap. Bittersweet Symphony Retake you'll enjoy. Then for Another side of Ren, The Big Push I Shot the Sherriff/Zion/Hip Hop.

Thank you for your honest, heartfelt reaction. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 6 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on KZbin are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. "The Big Push" busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are awesome and well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," “War Pigs,” "My Generation," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. The band performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo medical treatment for his multiple health issues, including surgeries. In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren has hinted that he might release his newest song on March 29, which is his birthday.

People who suffer from psychosis and delusion often hear voices clearly as if someone else is actually speaking, and often times these voices can be "god" or "Satan" even if that person doesn't believe in religion. It's simply stereotypes we learn as we grow up in a culture that does. Sort of convenient actors for the interior dialogue. Still terrifyingly real, Great reaction vid!. Thank you,

Ren, to the best of what I've seen him say, isn't any more of a believer than you are. However, we live in the wreckage of a culture where it's still a touchstone; a metaphor we all understand simply by growing up here. As you push back harder on the 'depression' voice, its last gasp is usually pretty grandiose. "Fell, mortal, you push back on ME!?" Then you either get the joke, or you just let it win (at least for the moment.) "You think you're a god... then I guess that makes me a god too, MFer"

Thank you for sharing yourself with all all of us in this video. The reaction videos of analysts/musicians/common working folk/psychology experts etc. On music/art like this are a black hole, b/c they deliver an incredible dopamine rush of re-experiencing profound emotional impact through the eyes of others. Ren and Oliver Anthony have had a huge impact on me over the last year, after decades of not really listening to anything new. These songs, and ppl's reaction to them have restored, nay ignited a belief/hope for the future of humanity that (when not abused as escapism) really have helped me change my perspective, relationships with family, approach to career/life.

'Light Ren' is the Sail. 'Dark Ren' is the Rudder. The Sail wants to follow the Wind, sees the Rudder as an obstacle. "Leave me alone!" The Rudder can't move forward, sees the Sail as an erratic problem. "You need me!" 'Ren who stands' is the Pilot, using Sail and Rudder together to travel the World. Light/dark, good/evil have too much 'baggage' for me to feel comfortable. I like to 'go sailing'!

I've watched several American reactions to Hi Ren. I'm a Yorkshire girl and watching a fellow Northern Brit react was great. Finally someone else reacting at the same things as me! Like you, I was brought up in a Christian household... my Dad is a vicar. I think it produces two types of children: those that stay in the church bubble and those, like me and you, who get psychologically fucked up by it. ..and remain a "disappointment" for ever, despite many attempts to show I have other strengths. Your reactions were honest and insightful. Ren's lyrics are honest and insightful. And watching both of you reminds me that I am tickety-boo being who and how I am. It’s less about god vs devil, good vs evil and everything about surviving and getting through the other side. Using the ideology many have had forced on them. It’s a song that is the duality of survival. And there’s one thing you haven’t failed at- you haven’t failed at living. Yet. Because you are still alive.
