I honestly think G Scale makes the most sense for using in 40k. Considering how a lot of things in 40k are massively over-sized. It would fit right in to the setting. You just have to customize a train to look like it belongs in the universe. And at that point you don't need to worry about fitting it on a board because the train itself becomes the board. I'm thinking back to Unreal Tournament 2003 where there is a combat arena that is a pair of massive trains rolling next to each other that you battle back and forth on.

Maybe one way to integrate trains into a warhammer game is to build up some lore accurate rolling stock to use as terrain, then make a table with a continuous track to run it on. It'd be like a reproduction of the Darktide level. There's a lot of things to consider with a table like that, not to mention it's the furthest thing from practical, but it'd be a fun setpiece. I can also imagine the trainyard idea with a bunch of tanks and titans in epic scale weaving between cars, and there's a map hazard where every so often a train barrels through

I remember, years ago, building a working train layout as part of a Legends of the Old West table. That was fun there. If I remember right, I'd used some of the cheap toy trains that were sold at various places around christmas that were battery powered, took them apart and repainted them, set it up over a few tables that it crossed through while working as a basic layout when not in gaming use. Lots of cheaper terrain that works rather well for a western thing as well. But, one other thing to consider is that the scales are more of a "general" thing rather than a specific thing on both ends. There's a lot of N-Gage that is closer to 1/144 for various reasons such as diorama purposes since there is a lot of models that use that for things...learned that because I build a lot of gunpla, and a few friends have done things there. The scale is also used for CAV, the mech game Reaper Minis makes and semi-spun off.

You could go the other way around. Have a massive train set with terrain and section off a small part for wargaming, that includes a train rolling through. You can then section off a different part for a different game. I can just imagine a reproduction of a small part of a forge world, with trains moving from quarry to smelter with small 1500 point armies battling in certain sectors.

I think one of the room sized track diorama's adapted for wargaming would be quite cool, hell expensive and rather niche, but say make it IG fortress and logistics centre, the trains running supplies around and some could even be armed with artillery to rapidly shift where they bring their firepower, you could if made large enough, even have multiple groups of people attacking and defending with their own sections of the assault/defense. Would I suspect be fun as hell if a nightmare to get set up

I haven't the foggiest on how to play the tabletop game that is warhammer, but I think rolling each turn to see both how far as well as on which track the trains go would be super interesting. You could even just hand move them so as to not have to deal with electronics and that's already what 40k players are used to anyways. I think the rail yard idea is super interesting, maybe taking movement penalties for each track they want to cross or even targeting and destroying the track (just removing a section from the board if that's how this type of rail is laid out) with an attack.. phase? (I heard that word watching Poorhammer so I may be using it wrong) so that way they can choose to either lose an attack or lose a movement when crossing, and maybe the trains when blocking their path can have the same health as tanks so it's more difficult to make it through them when they block your path. Just a few ideas I had that branched from your own ideas. Having a version of the game that includes something like trains would be super interesting because that could bring train people into 40k and it could get the community more non-space marine units which is always a win!

While a layout on a Warhammer table is impractical...what if the idea was approached in the opposite direction through integrating a Warhammer table into a layout? The size of a table shifts from an area that an entire layout needs to be squeezed into, over to the constraint that a specific section of a layout needs to have symmetrical track and accessible from 2 opposing sides, and buildings/terrain features aren't permanently secured in that zone. You would probably want the rest of the layout to have the Warhammer aesthetic so the "Table" doesn't look out of place. So, the question would evolve into what you could do to make a layout with a Warhammer style to it...

IIRC N guage is about 10mm so you could easily go to a miniatures manufacturer like Pendraken and pick up lots of toys. Paint them like IG and another lot in xenos or chaos colours. 3D print some support stuff like walkers and marines. You then have potential to both integrate a miniatures game with actual moving trains as the scale means you need to figure out how to move your forces to the front. I did something similar with the Franco-Prussian War in which the training in of reinforcements was a key factor in the 8 player battle. Fun times!

Theoretically you could build a layout and have a 6x4 area in your layout that functions as a game table and then have the trains roll onto and off of the table as part of a larget loop. I used tyo play warhammer on a 4x8 sheet of Plywood that had a loop of old O guage track on it from a train my dad had as a kid. We never ran the train during gameplay but we just needed a tabletop and it was present.

the rolling stock with HO scale I think would work, IF you don't use normal boxes but instead flats. You see something similar in Darktide, open cargo freights that you have to fight across and them being a little small works if it's intended for a few workers and a pallet of stuff
@8-7-styx945 күн бұрын
So HOn3 can be used if you elevate the track about 8-10" (12" to be safe from tall models) off the board. What you'd be simulating is actually a raised train track and the skewed perspective of those below it. From their vantage point the elevated train is much smaller than it would be, than if they were up next to it. It's a bit of a weird visual trick as your brain thinks the train is absolutely tiny compared to the models, so you have to get down level with the board and view it from their perspective. At which point, it looks awesome. This gives more interesting track layouts as well as the ability to use a working train. Yes S-Scale is basically 40k scale, + or - a little, so that would be ideal, but boy is it really hard to find.
