Yeah!..Finally John, you are doing something that i am familiar with. I use soldicam for lathe pretty much every day at work..it will be really interesting for me now to compare it with your work.

I have been trying to learn Fusion 360 and have a small lathe that I have added stepper motors to, and have been hand writing G code, so I though I would watch you video to see what it is like to use Fusion 360. Now I wish I had played more computer games when I was younger. It is almost the same as a game, fiddle around till you find something works. :)

You needed to set your holder to an internal grooving holder. Also I reckon given how open that face groove is, you could probably use Face Profiling instead of grooving if you wanted to take a different approach. The main issue with face grooving is the holder definition. they are extruded profiles... and so are the inserts, so you get false crash warnings in the simulation. I just define the insert and holder with zero thickness, then make sure the tool comments include the radius range your holder will support. You can then build in some checks in your process to make sure you are using the right tool for the groove. Bit of a ball ache to be fair, but workable.

I did a part with a internal face groove. 11in deep. 11.000 to 9.something +.003 -.000 tolerance on that dia. Now that was a great experience. on top of that they were from another shop that couldn't do that feature.

Hi, I was looking for a way to program face grooving and found this video. It is the exact same part as I was programming LOL! I need to do a 2nd operation on this part where the side you programmed was already made. The part has a taper on the largest side, a diameter of 35mm and a length of 6mm and a 6mm hole in the center. The operation is cutting the same face groove in the back side from 9.5mm to 26mm. Any ideas on how to hold these in a CNC lathe with a hydraulic chuck? the taper makes it want to push the part out I think. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

It would be interesting to see how abom79 or Randy in the shop would do the inside groove on a traditional lathe and how that might be applied to cad/cam/cnc.

How did you create that grooving tool. I'm a beginner and I have to create a groove like that one.

does fusion have shading and color options? those bright colors and shiny shaded parts are hard to see maybe only on camera but that's what is being viewed here. More pastel colors would help greatly.

Cad-Cam_Man Yes it does. I set my work background to near black. I hate staring at bright colors on a screen. Just wish they would allow a color change for their toolbar backgrounds as well

Is it a correct guess that the 5th axis for the haas has a high speed mode for lathe work and that's why you don't use the lathe templates much anymore?
@occamssawzall3486
@occamssawzall3486 7 жыл бұрын
Tjita1 No. the HAAS 5th axis rotaries are actually quite slow. They don't have continuous rotation like a lathe, Integrex, or a Mori with an FD table does.

Ryan Noppe that's a minor incident, a major mill crash is crashing the spindle into the vise, aka the same as almost every lathe crash. I've heard of tool holders going flying with a chunk taken out of them from the chuck.

I worked at a shop a while back where the lead hand's father was a service tech, got some rather interesting stories. At one shop the operator of their HMC set the part zero at the bottom of the part rather than the top, then ran the thing at 100% rapid, the cutter plunged through the part at full rapid speed, into the vice and friction welded itself in place. The whole spindle was a goner, and needless to say, the operator became an ex-operator. Goes to show you, always prove your programs and setup, always.

If you don't learn g code this problems stays .. cam is for complex machining like 5 axis when the human brain can't write or calculate all point of code. A face groove like that i do every week in lathe parts in 3/4 min of programming. Is simple ... LEARN G CODE AND HAND PROGRAMMING !

Thanks for another great video, to me this part is a railroad wheel for a model train, on the grooving for the recess as it is just there for looks you could use a button tool or like this www.aliexpress.com/store/product/SDJCR1212H07-12-12mm-Metal-Lathe-Cutting-Tools-Lathe-Machine-CNC-Turning-Tools-External-Turning-Tool-Holder/1141026_1804918130.html Cheers Mark

It is a model train wheel based on dimensions but the profile is a rail car wheel of any scale including 12 inches to the foot.

Janne Kotka everyone crashes.... I did my second day. last time since. I run fanuc and hurco both conversational and about 500 times faster to program at control. also more of a mill guy but like running our hurco tm18. it's butt puckering

Janne Kotka I had my coupler break on my z axis dropped bout 3in into my vice. machine was OK just had to replace the coupler. my 2" iscar upfeed took a little beating but is still usable. vise was old but still a decent vise.
