Nice trick, I did something similar with a Raspberry Pi box but since it was flat there was no need to copy the body. I could Extrude-Cut the shape directly and extrude again to isolate the area with the pattern. I am a bit biased against copy/paste and Move commands, I think it's because they seem less parametric to me 😜 I've been thinking about this a bit, looking for something simpler, and I think in this case you could apply a Split Body of the shape, then extrude cut the pattern and combine both. Since you liked my suggestions in other videos I took the liberty to add one here, sounds like a good way to improve together 👌😃

Always appreciate your suggestions. I would still class copy/paste as a parametric move, since whatever changes you make to the original would be reflected in the pasted body. I like your suggestion about the split body. The honeycomb cut then be applied only on the split body. That is certainly a good alternative.

To create the hexagon pattern you can draw one hexagon and define the pattern directions perpendicular to two sides. This creates the same pattern.

Hi, thank you for the suggestion. That is certainly the better way. I realised this as much when I searched for other honeycomb pattern videos.

Thanks for posting your video, but I think there is an easier way to do this. Just shell the mouse model. Then on a plane above it, draw the hexagonal pattern, then the crop area outline(s). Then just extrude downward and cut only the areas defined by the mask line and hexagons. Done!

How do you get the hexagons to be normal to the surface instead of normal to the plain?

Hi, thank you for the comment. I will see what I can do here. In general, I try to make it a point to introduce a new concept or technique in every video. I will see if I can use the mouse model in a future video when I talk about a new concept.

You can use the move\copy command, just move it 1mm in an axis, when done select the body and move it the 1mm back. Sometimes for whatever reason the copy paste doesn't work, so i had to do this.
@Fusion360School
@Fusion360School 3 жыл бұрын
That works too. It is just strange that the move/copy command doesn't allow for copying a body in the original location.

@@Fusion360School yes, very strange, every other program has a duplicate function, which is not the same as copy and paste in place

Hello, I know this is an old video, but I wanted to ask how to make the mouse model shown in this video? because I've already spent over 2 hours trying to make it, looking at the history of modeling in your video, but unfortunately I'm still too weak to do it :( I'd be grateful for help or maybe some description :)

I know this is an older video but hopefully someone can reply, Is there any quick way to avoid the segments of the pattern that get split by the masking area? I want to make a pattern like this but i want to keep every single one of the pattern objects whole.

Is it possible to sketch on curved plane/surface? What if we wanted the honey comb cutout to be perpendicular to the curved surface? The method shown here work only for small curvatures.

I’m doing this with .125 radius with .3 spacing and either crashes or completely deletes my copy. When I go to .25 radius with .5 spacing it works. This isn’t the size I want, what am I doing wrong?

Alternate Workflow? what about using a Split Face on the original body using the mask as a profile then embossing the honecomb pattern only onto that Face ?
@Fusion360School
@Fusion360School 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the emboss command only works on surfaces with curvature in only one direction (e.g. cylinder). In this case, the top face of the mouse has curvature in 2 directions. When I tried this out, the command does not allow me to select the face. Looking back at this workflow, I should have performed a split body to split out the masked area. I should also have extruded just a single hexagonal cell and patterned this single cell cut instead of patterning within the sketch. The pattern can then be constrained to the split out body.

how did you selected ONLY the profiles on the "windows select" if i just drag my selection it selects all kinds of stuff in the sketch
@Fusion360School
@Fusion360School 2 жыл бұрын
Fusion is usually pretty good at recognizing sketch profiles. In this case, there is nothing under the sketch that interferes with the selection. This makes it easier too. If you have difficulty, you can use the selection filter to turn on sketch profiles only. Knowing what I know now, I would actually encourage you to just do a single honeycomb cell, extrude and do a feature pattern instead. Patterning within sketches should be avoided.
