If it was one of the first, I imagine that's why it would've been considered heroic. Not only being revolutionary for television, but I could imagine something like that being a big deal all those decades ago. Hence, being heroic for having the guts to do it.

Shatner would only do the show if Nimoy and him would be in the same booth doing their lines. When the time came, the whole crew of the show were crowded around the window watching them. The reason for Welchie was that James Doohan would not do the show under any circumstances.

The chair was a reference to a star trek episode, by the way. Honestly practically everything in this episode was. A lot of the series, too, really.

I LOVE how Zapp Brannigan is essentially if Captain Kirk was playing William Shatner, not the other way around.

You know it's funny the term Mary Sue came from Star Trek fanfiction and that's What Melvar is in his fan fiction a self-insert Mary Sue.

i sometimes forget just how old mary sues are. people made parody fan fictions making fun of bad self insert ocs back in the 70s.

Continuity always goes out the window eventually, but IIRC Hermes openly mentioned _Star Trek_ to Fry way back in the second episode of the first season.

Maybe he's descended from someone that survived the purge. Maybe they didn't get sacrificed because, not being, no one knew the were a Trekkie? The old faiths never truly die, they merely lurk in unseen depths... waiting.

True. But on the other hand, in the very first episode, Fry was interrupted from staying Star Trek when an automatic door closed onto his face before he could finish uttering the forbidden words.
