MGS2 led me to a place where it’s ok to have heroes and emulating it is great but to not follow the hype, to not be a replica but to surpass that point of its peak, and to also not live in the Norms of society and live to the whim of higher entities “governments” and such

I've argued with many friends that MGS2 is the most important game ever made. It was a warning about a dark future, where disinformation runs rampant, where certain entities, parties, or a dangerous autocrat would seek exploit it. A phantom from 2001 come to haunt us in the 2020s. Enter Solidus Snake. I appreciate the essays greatly. The meta-narrative Kojima and team crafted over the years has never faded with this gamer.

When you realize the Big Shell itself is like a symbol for Raiden's heart, after he's captured and Arsenal is activated, the Big Shell (both the place and the "Big Shell" around his heart) are destroyed. Heck he's literally stripped both naked and in the persona he had prior where he believed he was a rookie soldier who never killed before. This is where he starts to breakdown and remember who he is. Snake could be interpreted as Raiden's Super Ego, the part that keeps him good and sane, reassuring him whenever he feels doubt (Looking at him while Solidus strangles you literally slows the depletion of the o2 gauge.) GW could stand for the Id, trying to influence him in unhealthy ways by divulging the origin of his birthname being linked to war, encouraging him to fight and kill Solidus (Literally refers to the two as their monsters.) Making Raiden question everything he knows, the mind break codec calls in Arsenal, and trying to convince him that his free will is a mistake. Most importantly, GW is directly against everything Snake stands for despite insisting not to trust him because he isn't part of the simulation even though he perfectly fits in as the "Meryl" of the S3. The symbolism in this game is something else!

It's funny how the playable main characters are all related in a way. Jack Sears is named because he's the adopted son of George Sears aka solidus snake. Like solid snakes dad is big boss so is raidens in a way since solidus snake is the 'perfect' clone of big boss. Now raidens not genetically solidus's son, but it's still funny how all the main playable characters are in some way related to big boss. And like how solid snake had to kill his 'father' so too will raiden by the end of sons of liberty. Oh how I love mgs for its overly complicated story.
