Ah the secret is out! any kind of EQ, bright/ tight OD, or treble booster into a big muff will give a great metal sound. crazy to think every thing you need to get a killer "modern" sound was already there by 1970 Right?

Boosted Muffs are a favorite of mine. Another fun one that only works with a passive guitar is a Rangemaster type pedal (my favorite is the Catalinbread Naga Viper) into a Fuzz Face. You get a bit more mids, and a bit less low end, but it's still a great uncommon brush sound.

I normally only like to use fuzzes for industrial and doom, however this boosted fuzz indeed has a pretty cool sounding for any metal approach.

The Big Muff Sovtek Deluxe has sort of a mudkiller inside + a noise gate ! Bringing back the mids you want to cut through.

Mudkiller into the Big Muff sounded CRAZY, I definitely need to try messing around with some different fuzz and od/boost plugins for this track I'm working on That's got so much more character than the standard tubescreamer > rectifier/5150 > v30 setup that so much modern metal seems to be defaulting to these days

A tube screamer does the same thing essentially with a little less control. I run two of them into a big muff, into an mxr eq, then into a compressor and it sounds fucking brutal and it's kindy spongey feeling like a tube amp. You just have to mess around with the gain/sustain knobs to get a good balance.
