Bam! Friday video following a Tuesday video! The world has descended into chaos. Yes this gauge setup has some questionable eyelines and yes there's a lot of hot glue, but I don't know what else you expected if you've been following this project. This video was tough to put together, it covers a lot and bounces all over the place, but at least I was mostly able to sort it into categories so hopefully it makes sense. Episode 47 we'll wire the engine bay and the car side of these gauges, and then we can have some fun in 48!

Two Videos in a week? What a treat! For hot glue I suggest getting a high temp gun and glue, the glue sticks WAY better to metal I found. A bit more expensive but its worth it, also you can get black glue.
@FuzzyDiceProjects11 күн бұрын
I did eventually get a no-name brand glue gun that uses Dewalt 20v batteries, it works very well and the glue sticks way better but honestly sometimes it sticks too well haha. Sometimes there's value in being able to peel off a hunk of glue without scraping parts clean, so I think both types have their place.
@sandpiper151511 күн бұрын
@FuzzyDiceProjects a great trick I've learned for hot glue is isopropyl alcohol, make any glued part pop right off like magic as soon as it wicks underneath.

I love that. I think you did/are doing a great job. I do not care too much for the black on white label tape. You can get black on clear or any color you choose, if you choose. You can also program the machine to print vertically. One more thing, are you sure about the hot glue? What if it were to get, you know, _hot?_ But you do it your way - whatever that is - you look like you know what you're doing.
@FuzzyDiceProjects11 күн бұрын
The plan was to change out the labels later on, I just had the white ones at the time. I don't have any clear tape yet but I think that would probably look the best so I'll have to get some and try it out! I also hadn't considered vertical text, I'll have to play around and figure out how to do that. As for the glue, I haven't had an issue with it getting tacky or melting yet since it takes more heat than most things will put out, but I'm sure an incandescent bulb would pose a threat. The indicators are incan and get warm to the touch, but the bulbs are so small I'm hoping they'll be fine. I ran a test leaving them plugged in for a few hours and the glue didn't have any problems, but it the hot, enclosed dashboard things may be different so we'll have to wait and see. A lot of the time I just try things to see what I can get away with until I find out the limits!

A trick that I've used to shock and amaze my friends to get factory clocks working again is pretty simple. Ensure there is no mechanical damage to the clock. If the clockspring moves freely, chances are it'll work again. Step 1: Clean the points for the rewind mechanism. Step 2: Liberally hose out the guts of the clock with Brake Clean spray. Step 3: Allow guts to dry. Step 4: Liberally spray WD-40 (or similar very light oil) over the clock guts Wait 5 minutes, then apply power. Clock will work. I did this method one night in front of a friend of mine who had TWO AMC Rebel factory clocks. In 10 minutes, I had BOTH working again. The one he installed in his Rebel Machine to this day works perfectly.

Hey, instead of wood screws I do use the plasterboard screws as they have wider thread so it bites more.
@FuzzyDiceProjects11 күн бұрын
Good thinking! I really just used what I had, but I should get some of the coarse thread plaster/plastic screws to have on hand
@marek196c11 күн бұрын
@@FuzzyDiceProjects I do often the same (using what I got lying around), but I found those screws to be best for applications like plastics, J nuts and anything thin really. In your case you could do the wood backing on sides in case you worried about the plastic cracking. Also do you plan on having radio/audio in the car?
@FuzzyDiceProjects11 күн бұрын
@@marek196c At some point I'd like to put a radio back in the car, but it's low priority. There's an open area below the original radio slot that would be a little cubby from the factory, but it's always been missing on mine and I think a small head unit would fit there no problem
@marek196c10 күн бұрын
@@FuzzyDiceProjects got you, but is worth mentioning that if you want a "stealth" installation there are micro amps like Vibe Powerbox 65.4M (make is just example there are plenty of other ones) that you can fit anywhere (with enough space for some air obviously) in the car. That amp (like most) you can combine with the aux receiver like dab radio (if you want the radio, usb, hands-free and other features as well you can opt for something like this "DAB Digital Radio Adapter 2.4" or "tinyaudio c-smart" with control from your phone app) or just a simple Bluetooth receiver. Also idk how is in America with availability of those and dab coverage itself so wroth keeping it in mind. Just giving an idea, but is just something that you may already know.

I have a question why would the fuel switch on the dashboard just be a momentary one?
@FuzzyDiceProjects11 күн бұрын
That's just intended to be a prime switch, to run the fuel pump before cranking the engine over if it's been sitting for a while. The fuel pump will normally be powered by the oil pressure switch when the engine is running, similar to what GM did in the 80's. I was back and forth on it being a momentary or a toggle (so it could run the pump for diagnosis or if something went wrong) but it seemed more appropriate to use a momentary and a rubber band or piece of tape could make it act like a toggle if desired.

I just wondered why you didn't use switches with built in lights? They use them a lot on boats.... commonly available and cheap...
@FuzzyDiceProjects11 күн бұрын
Two main reasons: 1. I have four of those for the offroad lights in my Silverado and have had issues with bulbs coming loose/failing over the years so I'm hesitant to use any without further testing. 2. I bought a shitton of regular toggle switches years ago and have a lot of them left haha
