An interview in the 90s mentioned that Poston and Plechette came up with the last episode of Newhart at a couples dinner as an off the cuff joke based on this episode. However the show kept getting wilder and wilder after Larry, Darryl and Darryl became regulars. It had become complete farce by the last season... So my guess is that Newhart himself came up with something like that years prior.
