The way Rockstar treated Johnny in GTA 5 was really disappointing. Also, the way he's represented in GTA 5 seems really 'out of character' and just out of nowhere. We see in the Lost and Damned DLC that Johnny is a pretty rational and level-headed guy, as was pointed out in this video. He never shows any interest in doing hard drugs or being a degenerate (like Ashley). And by the end of the DLC it seems as Johnny has really grown and matured even more. He's much smarter, wiser, and mentally stronger. He finally tells off Ashley, for example - realizing that she's nothing but trouble and a waste of time and effort. But then in GTA 5, Johnny is suddenly a strung-out meth addict. And he's back with Ashley and seems totally devoted to her and head-over-heels in love with her - going so far as to even get himself killed over her. Seeing what Johnny is like at the end of the Lost and Damned DLC and then seeing what he's like in GTA 5, it just makes no sense at all. I really don't understand what the Rockstar writers were thinking. It makes no sense.

Yes! Thank you! I'm saving it till I review GTA V, but I couldn't agree more. Honestly I think they did it for shock value, origionally wanted it to be Nico (his Voice actor was beefing with them hard over pay) and they bitched out and went with Johnny.

Not an criminals are pieces of shit, you know, even murderers can have their good qualities. Nobody is born evil, and it takes some people a lot longer to lose their souls, if they ever do. Unfortunately though, the gangsta lifestyle is not one that rewards compassion, wisdom, or forethought. People are complicated, especially people stuck in the life, with seemingly no way out. You try to minimize the collateral damage, right up until something breaks you, and you either find a way out, or you become one of the monsters. The thing with Rockstar nowadays, is that for some odd reason they've re-used way too many characters from previous games. Makes it feel effortless and stagnant. While TLAD came before Sons of Anarchy, I couldn’t help but notice that some of the characters reminded me of the SOA Cast. Billy had a bit of Clay, because he was a President that, ultimately never cared about the club. Johnny had elements of Jax, as both wanted to restore their club to its former glory, and lead it in the right direction, eventually becoming President themselves. Brian was a weird one. It’s either Juice or Tig. Because Juice betrayed the club, to protect a secret of his (Which none of the members ever cared about anyway) and Tig, because he was Clay’s Right Hand. And would back him no matter what. But unlike Brian, he actually saw that, his President wasn’t ALWAYS in the right. Can’t say the rest of the TLAD cast reminds me of the SOA Cast. Maybe Ashley, because Wendy had a drug problem. At the very least, Wendy actually wanted to get clean. Ashley just wanted to be high all the time and leech off of Johnny.

I say this knowing full well I'm playing with fire, but I've got to get it off my chest. I've never been real impressed with the writing in Rockstar's games. Johnny Klebitz is just John Marston on a motorcycle, he doesn't have a a son, but Ashley is Abigail minus affection and plus a drug problem. The only way this could read more like fan fiction is if Billy had the same first initial as Dutch, like the other two, then obviously, there's the gang. Honestly I'm surprised they didn't make Abigail addicted to opoids or something when they finally did make RDR2 - because remember she also slept with the whole gang! But none of that actually bothers me, what bothers me is that there are no surprises. You don't ever think to yourself, "Hey you know, they're brothers - maybe this is just a rough patch and Johnny and Billy will get through this and get along!" Which is just an example but you see my point. And even though the writing is monumentally better in both Red Dead games this same predictability carries on into RDR2. The relationships between the Johns (or Arthur as he was later conceived) and their masters is not one that progresses. We don't see their relationship change, we are informed that it has already changed and we very slowly watch it conclude from the middle. These games are long too, they could do it more like a TV show, if they tried. If I'm not mistaken in the Sons of Anarchy the animosity between Clay and Jax sees them in pretty firm alliance a few times before they're tensions finally come to a head. And from just reading the wiki for how it does end between them, I can say: not in the personal way you'd probably expect. It evolves over time. Unlike in these games where it's like: "Hear ye, Hear ye, come one come all, see what happens when an unstoppable force meets in immovable object!" and then one of them just blows right through the other. Dutch is so "head empty: only bs" - he repeats so many times that it became a meme... "I have a plan!" All the writers EVER do is reinforce, they never reinvent, recontextualize, re-evaluate, or recalibrate. Johnny thinks Billy is a hothead who is going to get them killed, so we have to show in EVERY MISSION that Billy is a hothead who is going to get them killed. How is this "great" writing to so many people? When it comes to GTA V I credit them for trying to be somewhat original but is so all over the place that unless your'e _supposed_ to kill Trevor I don't even know what it's trying to be about. GTA IV gets similar credit, and it's more coherent, but is still very by the numbers in a lot of key ways. Their satire is really obvious too, make fun of self-interested, capitalist greed, with cynical over the top characters surrounded by stupid morons who don't know what's going on; representing a whole bunch of their player base who don't get that GTA is supposed to be a joke about the country and not a blueprint for it, and then themselves when they get even more greedy bloating tf out of online mode. They even Gamified Scarface before the Scarface game! Scarface took a lot of well earned crap for ruining the ending, and thus the point, of the original movie, hilariously Vice City, which doesn't even get crap for being a virtual carbon copy of that movie did the same thing, only because it was stolen you had to get to the end to have it ruined. It's not that all this is just bad. So my opinion here is largely subjective, (not always as evident as plagiarizing Scarface) but I feel like people only like it so much because it's not _terrible_ and it's in really fun games. Otherwise would people even care? You know most people don't even play the story mode, even before online, statistically speaking, basically, no one ever finishes them. Stop me if you've heard this one: Your hero is a somewhat vulnerable, highly judgmental, but ultimately amoral mass murderer, who'd rather lecture other people on their faults than recognize and change the err of his ways - You got it! It's every protagonist in a Rockstar game since at least San Andreas! And remember there are only three locations in the entire world and despite the existence of Florida, *Trevor* is situated in one of the other two. One of these unstated patterns is the main reason Red Dead Redemption, and Gay Tony immediately stood out to me when I played them. I thought for sure Luis was going to have to kill Tony by the end. This pattern of work for a guy, have a falling out, and then pop him is so present in Rockstar games that Lamar actually hangs a lampshade over it at the beginning of Five. In Read Dead John took all sorts of missions from people I thought were shady and almost surely going to die, only for many if not most of them to become reliable allies. The plot of the game is more impressive for other reasons, but I've rambled enough. In contrast the hype machine of public perception, as far as I can tell they make great games with okay stories, but as stories themselves they don't hold a candle to the movies that inspired them

@@colindowden2182 Couldn't agree more. Total waste of time. You probably shouldn't have written it then.

i miss when rockstar actually cared about their games, i remember Rdr having a million quality online updates and Undead Nightmare, and GTA 4 getting both TLAD and TBOGT. Now all we get is grindy cash grabs for GTAO and lazy grindy “updates” for RDRO, of course, when we actually got them, like 4 years ago, since all we get know is 50% off canned beans.
