Almost a year ago, attendees spent thousands of dollars to Attend Fyre Fest in the Bahamas. They were expecting a luxury music festival but ended up in something closer to a refugee camp with an EDM DJ
But the well-heeled college kids weren't the only ones affected by the scam. Festival employees and contractors, weren't just there for a good time. They were counting on a paycheck. And for many of them, the damage lasted long beyond an unpleasant weekend camping experience.
Here’s what happened to Darrell Thorne, an artist and performer who was contracted by Fyre Festival.

You guys should have focused more on the LOCALS. They're the ones who are truly devastated and have lost the most. The opportunities that this young man had to start over or to reclaim some of his lost,is out of reach for them.

I would love to see a story on the locals who were affected by this trash ass festival. The most important account of the event would come from the people who live on the Bahamian island of Great Exuma who worked to put this festival together. Vice needs to do a video on them.
@bonapartist
@bonapartist 6 жыл бұрын
They probably greatly benefited economically. All they have is tourism, and this was tourism. Otherwise, the island has no meaningful economy whatsoever, they produce nothing besides a trivial amount of food (too little to export). The Sandal's resort was completely booked and other resorts were at the same time; the whole island was booked and refugees from Fyre had nowhere to go. This means the whole island was raking in those sweet, sweet tourist dollars. Without these tourists, the Exuma natives would be utterly impoverished. Thank god for tourists. This and many other island nations would be nothing without them, just impoverished, desperate backwaters.
@danielgreen1475
@danielgreen1475 6 жыл бұрын
As a Bahamian I'd love to see that also! I just was so worried that this debacle would give the country a bad image given how so many people unfortunately lost their money.

Farts McGee hmm sounds mildly racist....
@elizabethgreen7713
@elizabethgreen7713 6 жыл бұрын
Farts McGee yeah, they probably made some money on it but probably a lot less compared to what was promised. Fyre festival never paid them to use the area, resources, etc. Plus the festival goers probably caused some damage; the guy in the video even said he attempted to steal a van. He probably wasn't the only person there who caused trouble for the locals in order to benefit themselves. So yeah, they probably made some money but at what cost?
@morphman86
@morphman86 6 жыл бұрын
Farts: I grew up in a tourist trap. We had 3-5 festivals every tourist season. I didn't see a single penny of these "sweet tourist dollars". A festival hiring locals and then not paying them what they owe is never beneficial for the ones who didn't get paid. Even if it brings in 10 times the number of tourists than before, it still won't mean jack squat for the ones who are owed honest pay for honest work.

If your idea of camping is getting scammed for 350, staying in a tent in a tropical climate rather than a forest, while eating nothing but sandwiches with no meats, but just a slice of cheese. ALSO, a single tomato with water. And let's not forgot a lack of fire, and there being wild dogs being more common than any forest animals. Then you've never had a real camping experience.

those masks give me night terrors. my mom was diagnosed end-stage cancer & had a tumor that spread to her brain. they put her on radiation treatment. she had to wear that mask, and they fix/screw the mask to a table then put you into like a MRI tunnel. it's absolute hellish horror for anyone with claustrophobia or anxiety issues. i could only hold her hand & sing Elton John to get her through it. i kept the mask - it is haunting but it is a small piece of her.

This guy gets it. Artists, especially full-time ones, seem especially vulnerable to scams like these, due to the nature of their paychecks. But, if he says there were NO signs anything was amiss even up until he left, I doubt he did his homework on the organizers. Here's a good vid on it kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3OzmGicqaiArJo

Bro level with me for real if someone said here is a 2 week get away to the bahamas for 2 grand all expenses payed and from all outlets did not look like scam would you not take it? (Ps you would not have the knowledge that fyre would fail) i would totally take that opportunity. also fyre was actively marketed to collage students and lower income people who though this checked out. Im not saying that they were smart for going i just think to say that the attendees dont deserve the backlash because they go scamed.

That's who usually gets scammed. Too many people are too easily manipulated. They trust the news, trust the system, trust the government, trust their pseudo-doctor (because real M.D.s are scarce), accept lower standards, accept lower pay and accept higher prices. Jordan Peterson calls them 'agreeable', others might call them 'nice'. I call them cattle. Over-domesticated, not too sharp and first on the chopping block if anything goes wrong.

To be fair that happens to an extent at almost all concerts/festivals, especially if they're catered towards young people. Everyone knows that and we don't need an expose. A festival that scams people out of a lot of money and delivers basically nothing does deserve a lot of attention though

why the hell do people keep saying the people attending were all rich kids? most tickets only sold for $350 which included literally everything. Sure, some tickets were like $10'000 but there's no evidence that anyone actually bought any of those tickets. I hate how people are saying that the people attending were just spoiled rich kids. No, they were normal middle aged college students who were looking to have a good time

So far I have read 3 articles on the event. 2 articles said the ticket prices started $1500 and one said $1200. I would say that most middle class college kids could not afford to pay for the tickets plus airfare to take a weekend off and go to the Bahamas. I would say at a minimum they would have to be upper middle class. The average middle class college kid graduating with 50-100k worth of debt cannot afford to do such things.
@brockbayley5279
@brockbayley5279 6 жыл бұрын
watch the internet historian video on the festival. as i said, the ticket prices included everything from food, to airfares, to accomodation which, to be fair sounds like quite the deal for a luxury weekend in the Bahamas and most people would (and did) jump at the opportunity. 3 articles probably isn't enough. the video i suggested explains the ins and outs of the festival pretty well including why it failed and many of misconceptions about the festival (eg. ticket prices)
