Good to see you do this simple mod, it's easy , so many people complain about brakes lacking bite, as if its the end of the world and nothing can be done. I'm convinced that most manufacturers fit dead feeling wooden pads for our own safety, god forbid that we should have brakes that actually work (especially rears) in case we should brake to hard and our faces fly off our heads and our eyes pop out! I have had huge improvements on bikes much less well brake equipped than the MT-07 with SBS (Scandanavian Brake Systems) sintered pads. Have also experimented with different brands of OE spec pads in my Ford Puma with massive differences in performance. Great video!

Did you know the philips head screws on Japanese bikes are actually JIS not philips? I just learned this a week ago, that's why philips screwdrivers round out so easy, bought a JIS screwdriver off Amazon and it fits so much tighter in the screws.
@CraftwerksMC6 жыл бұрын
FWIW, JIS screws should usually have a dot on the surface of the screw to let you know it's JIS....
@oil_can4 жыл бұрын
What a revelation it was when I discovered the JIS screwdriver! Could never figure out why screw heads were always getting ripped up. Now that I have a JIS set, working on the bike is so much easier. Mystifies me that Yamaha includes a plain ol' Phillips head driver as part of the under-seat tool kit on the FZ/MT-07. Apparently they want us to rip up the heads!

Jake, I've been riding since I was 6. I got my first 49cc honda crf 2001. I recently got a 2011 yz 250f with the 5 valve head (no efi sadley). I'm going through it as the last person didn't take care of it. The forks are leaking and it doesn't like to idle. I'm slowly getting the grumpy troll back into race shape but you are my inspiration

Pro tip: Take the time to clean the calipers, and especially the pistons and around the lips of the piston seals with nice soapy water and a tooth brush before pushing them back in. The seals will last longer, and there will be less of a chance of them leaking and/or binding up down the road (both literally and over time).

Thought you are suppose to put some copper or anti seize paste on the spots where the pads hit the shiny metal, to counter brake noise en pad binding. And on the pin you put through the pads? Or did I not spoke to a certified mechanic?
@OddBallPerformance6 жыл бұрын
I follow the FSM for my bike. The only type of grease used on brakes will be on sealed slide pins on a rear caliper like is seen here.
@epiphonesg0076 жыл бұрын
Don't put any grease on the any part of the brake pads. Only part that needs SILICONE grease is on those sliding pins.
@OddBallPerformance6 жыл бұрын
Even most slide pins don't require any sort of grease unless they have an O-ring seal on the end of the pin like my Honda's rear brake, and that is just a tiny bit of grease right on said o-ring. Otherwise, the pin should be clean and dry.

For real braking power add some more rebound damping to those forks. But, since FZ-07 forks aren't "adjustable" -- ok so then the closest thing you can do for that is just throw in some heavier fork oil. But that could make the front forks a little more harsh (which may be ok actually seeing as how the stock forks are like mushy pogo sticks anyway lol)

Well that pins not a very tight connection and dust is made be the pads. The pads rattle on the pin. So grease would most likely just collect brake dust instead of help anything.

They are quite literally the exact same bike. Only difference is that it is called the FZ07 in North America and the MT07 on the other side of the pond (UK, Europe, ETC) and to avoid confusion (as with yourself), from 2018 onwards, the FZ is no more and the entire series is MT worldwide

Question. I'm upgrading mine with the same pads and spiegler lines. But my front brakes have been really scary lately. Begining of my ride, the lever will have a normal travel and activate the brake light switch. Eventually it will get really stiff and touchy with no travel and it feels like they'll lock up. Then it will go back to feeling normal. Currently have shorty levers. Swapped back to stock, same thing occurs. Bled the brakes with a vacuum. Same thing. Bled the brakes manually. Same thing. Noticed during bleeding, not a lot of fluid comes out when I open the bleeders. Asking for your professional opinion. Master cylinder, lines, or calipers? Went to my local Yamaha, master and/or rebuild kits are months out from Japan. So I'm left with shotguning the lines and maybe disassembling the master and going through it.
@TheGardenSnake6 жыл бұрын
When you did the vacuum pump was the cap on the brake resolver? Was the brake fluid you used new and unopened? Look around the web for a master cylinder rebuild kit. This bike is was to popular for someone not to have those in stoke.
@charlesgregorio98906 жыл бұрын
@@TheGardenSnake installed the new lines and pads last weekend. No change. Put the bike on the rear stand and lifted up the front end and attempted to spin the front wheel. Could not get a full rotation. Removed the calipers again to inspect travel (compression and extension) they move freely. So I'm assuming the master cylinder is not releasing the pressure.
@charlesgregorio98906 жыл бұрын
I wanted to follow up with you cause I had the same MZS shorty levers. The levers were the cause of the issue I was having. I compared them side by side with the stock and the pivot point is significantly different. The MZS levers were set at an angle that would push the master cylinder plunger in causing the brakes to drag. So I put the stock ones back on and bled them again. Perfect. I don't know if you or anyone else may experience this. Buyer beware.
