Aerial footage of damage along the coast of Miyagi Prefecture (Day after the earthquake)
The Japanese text is followed by an English translation.
Footage: Capture of the damage situation caused by the tsunami along the coast of Miyagi Prefecture. (Day after the earthquake on 3/12) Aerial footage shot from helicopter above Natori City in the south to Kesennuma City in the north.
Before 9 a.m. near the sea along southern Miyagi Prefecture, the borderline between land and sea had become indistinguishable. Sendai Airport’s (Natori City) terminal barely retains its shape while the runway is almost completely submerged.
Near Sendai Bay situated on the borderline of Sendai City (Miyagino Ward) and Tagajo City, fires have broken out among a number of facilities including the JX Nippon Oil & Energy Sendai Oil Refinery Combine, causing a big black cloud of smoke to rise above. There are no fire trucks in sight and one can assume that fire extinguishing attempts are nonexistent. At Matsushima Bay, the body of “Kurikoma,” Japan Coast Guard’s patrol boat (2nd Regional Japan Coast Guard Headquarters) lies tilted, stranded at sea.
The time is past noon and another helicopter is witnessed heading up north along the coast. Above Higashimatsushima City, it is apparent that a major part of Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s Matsushima Air Base has been flooded. Pointing the camera towards the hangar on grounds, a Blue Impulse is covered in debris. Flying over Ishinomaki City, there are numerous ships of various sizes that have been washed ashore or capsized near Ishinomaki Bay (Industrial Port). Scars left behind by the giant tsunami that attacked this town are clearly apparent among these places: The Ishinomaki Factory of Nippon Paper Group whose container has derailed off the freight line, Kadonowaki Area reduced to ashes by tsunami and fire, and the Minato Area and Watanoha Area located past the mouth of former Kitakami River to the east.
The helicopter heads further north, past the Mangokuura Lake where Onagawa Town lies in ruins. From Onagawa Bay to the plateau of Mangokuura (toward Ishinomaki) about 1km across, it is easy to imagine that the dreadful tsunami had taken its toll, swallowing up the residential area all in one go.
Report from helicopter: Announcers Yoshio Shinoda (Okayama Broadcasting) and Tsuyoshi Yanagisawa (Sendai Television)

My heart goes out to everyone affected by it, whether they lost their belongings & homes or if they lost friends or family. I just can't imagine how you all felt, but please know that the rest of the world prayed for Japan that night (I couldn't sleep that night so i was up watching TV when a news story interrupted what I was watching. I was unable to stop watching that night, and I'm still utterly fascinated by the power of a tsunami, so I really appreciate all the videos you have posted. I saw a documentary recently and thy said that because so many people in Japan had cell phones with cameras, scientists have been able to learn more about tsunamis with this one, than all other tsunami evidence combined.

@ Feed ME Donuts, I live near Galveston Bay in Texas. When hurricane Ike was on his way, I told my husband I wanted to leave, not because of the wind, but because of the storm surge that was predicted. We just went to higher ground. Even though we live behind a levy, I wasn’t going to trust it. At one time they had trouble closing the gates. After we got back, we found out the water only lacked one foot going over the levy. We would have lost everything. People need to be aware of things around them and take heed! I am well aware of what damage Katrina did. So sad. A lot of people came to Texas. I remember one very young man stole a school bus and loaded it with people and drove to Houston. He was a brave soul and I thought was a hero. He saved a bus load of people that had no other way out.

March 2019. I'm just seeing this footage for the first time. I thought I had seen all the tsunami films but this one is extra-special and I am so glad I found it. The close-ups and even views from high ground that are posted everywhere else are terrifying and immensely saddening, but this is practically unfathomable in its scope. Miles upon miles of nothing but mud and water and broken wood with a bit of concrete mixed in in spots. I understand that this was one of the places with the highest death tolls but how anyone at all lived through this is beyond me.

I Have watched and studied, with awe, almost every video taken, before, during and after, this terrible, magnitude of destruction hit Japan, in 3/11, and I still feel such sorrow and empathy for the people of Japan. This vid really hits you. They are still rebuilding and done quite well so far! I pray this never happens again, as well as the tragic, Indian ocean catastrophes.😔🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🛐💛

You know the words of comfort people tend to use - "it's gonna be OK", "I understand you" etc...But seeing such an immense disaster, these are nothing but empty phrases. People of Japan, no one can ever understand you. You lost your beloved ones, your homes, your memories, your sense of safety...I don't know if it'll ever be OK, if all the damages - especially the mental ones can be fixed, but I admire you from the bottom of my heart for not giving up.

It's gonna be OK is the right words to say, for saying so will make it so. We've had numerous disasters and each time we come back stronger. Throughout the affected regions, 10 years later now run the fukko-doro, quite literally road to recovery, a four lane highway with best of the counter-quake measures that can withstand magnitude 8 like it's nothing in its bridges and tunnels. The economy is actually better off now.

I gotta say this, whoever built those homes on that island at 7:00 needs to be teaching everybody else how to build. I’m blown away at the fact that not just 1 but many homes are still standing. Now they may have to be torn down but still that’s unbelievable. I mean it’s pretty obvious a tsunami hit the island because there’s still total destruction all around but that’s crazy. I can’t imagine living through something like that. I know they don’t show it but u gotta know that with all that debris being pulled back out there’s gonna be some bodies. Or even people who are still hanging in there doing everything they to survive and there ain’t a whole lot u can do for them! That’s what would kill me over time. Seeing the look on my family and friends faces as they struggled to survive. Probably the scariest part to me is seeing that 40-50ft. wave of cars, lumber, trees and everything else tearing across that open field at 70mph! It didn’t even look real. Swallowing everything in its path.

30:50 i hope to God no one was alive on that debris made island! Just imagine all the people who died, were swept out to see, their body never recovered for the family! its terrible, and the sheer amount of destruction, its mind boggling. Really good camera work, and it shows just how much that tsunami destroyed. Thoughts and prayers for those who were affected by this, and for all those who lost their lives to that earth quake and the tsunami.

at 1:54 it looks like part of the airport collapsed, did it? because i saw video from inside there, and that would be shocking if that was captured on film (they had the earthquake, and the water rushing onto the tarmac, nothing after that). EDIT: Guess it didn't collapse, thank God! 2:25 shows it was just the end of the terminal building.

There is a state park where I live in Oregon with shoals of wood washed up by the tsunami in 2011. They're off the pathways so no one sees them unless they're hiking, and also surrounded by dunes and short pines and the grass is coming up through them now, however they cover large areas alongside an estuary. When I look at it I think of the lives lost and disrupted and I feel so sorry for the people and the animals who died in the tsunami. The same thing would happen here, although they make noises about 'the big one' here no one is really prepared and certainly nothing like Japan was.
