He was the finest Parsifal at the Stockholm Royal Opera too, as well as such a fine Lohengrin, carrying these spiritual roles with his warm, mature heart and dignity. He was an example of a huMan being., and inspiration and enrichment to the world. Varmt tack, Gösta Winbergh.

So very touching with such a powerful and warm and sensitve and more and more tenors. I dont know much about opera and so, but Gösta touched my heart from the very beginning, specially in "Du är min hela värld"...So very tragic when a great singer pass away. RIP Gösta Winbergh

What a great loss! He was one of my favorite tenors. He spanned Mozart, Wagner and the Italian masters....all with the same energy and superb artistry. I was privileged enough to work with him and be mentored by him during training with the Chicago Lyric young artist program. Thanks for posting!!!

His timbre is absolutely exquisite, but he is here, as he to my recollection always was, rather short on breath. Most tenors at this level hold the phrases together far better. But, as said, beautiful it is.

@@kenlund9671 But I am generally not a fan of saying one singer is "better" than another. There is always so much subjectivity involved. I only ever heard Winbergh sing Don Ottavio live and I must say it was pretty much perfection. It was so on point regarding voice color and musicality. He used to bring the house down with "Dalla sua pace" - and perfect very night. (I was working on that production in the opera house). This was all before he had branched out into Wagner but he told me of his plans was so excited about singing the new roles. For years and years he basically only sang lyrical repertory so you are absolutely right that Gedda had by comparison a huge repertory. Gösta was an awfully nice guy, so well mannered and warm hearted and charming person.

@@Yves_Ka ”There is always so much subjectivity involved..” I agree about that. At the end of this answer, I have posted an earlier response that I just wrote on YT about a year ago. I think it coincides with your thoughts. Before.. I have always liked Winberg's voice. After his debut, the newspapers wrote about him as the "new" Jussi Björling. Modest as he was, he just shook his head when it was mentioned in an evening program. In a way, you can see it as a bit ominous because he never became a "new Jussi" in terms of success. It has often aroused thoughts in me, because I have always had a feeling that he had so much more to give, and that it would come loose, even though time passed. Perhaps his humility was too great. Rolf Björling once told me that a tenor should not think or care so much, because then he will not be successful. Nina, his wife, therefore considered that Rolf had half the success in his hand, because he never thought more extensively 😃 Yes, perhaps that his humility became inhibiting, and with it the embers, the fire suffered and more on with that, the climax was never fully reached. He was a handsome man, with an attractive stage appearance, but it was of the kind "one way", so even there the dynamics were lacking. After a couple of minutes you had seen everything. Don Ottavio .., "perfect" .., yes I know. Things that you do intensively and for a long time, you eventually get tired in the end. Actually given and hence a change is called for. Hhowever Wagner.., a dubious choice. More honestly, I think that was completely wrong. Mentioned answer here on YT Jan 2021. As you can see, I have divided it into three parts. Something has preceded that structure. However, I do not remember what it was. I (III) Arguing about the greatest in this genre, is meaningless. In my youth I thought that Jussi Björling was the best singer who ever lived. Anyone that said something else were, more or less, stupid and/or did not understand the metaphysic of the opera. II (III) Today (after 55 years of listening) I do not think he was the best, but I think he made some songs/arias better than other e.g. “Holy Night”. Earlier I also thought that Mr.Gedda way of singing was an academic mumbo jumbo. No force, no real expression etc. Nowadays I think that he was a great artist, with an outstanding voice technique. He forces his voice almost never. III (III) Finally... There are regular singers, there are better singers, and there are the great masters. Who is the best among the greatest is only a matter of taste. However, we must not forget that even the best chess players make bad move sometimes. We feel what we do and we exchange our feelings (e.g. on yt), and I do like that. In one way or another we learn and get inspiration of each other and that is, as I see it, very valuable.

Quite right. If Mr. Winbergh had achieved a breathing technique in line with Mr. Björling or Mr. Gedda he had, I think, been among the foremost of our time. Regardless, he was always "fun" to listen to. I saw him the first time, just a few days, after his debut on the Grand Theatre (Stora Teatern) in Göteborg. Immediately I felt for his warm voice and it did continue from year to year.

Maybe we should not mourn Mr.Winberg's early death so much. He had a rich life, with many fine days. Many are those who almost never have a fine day.

So superb! One of the best male voices of the century. And so good-looking too. And fit, he could move and act on stage, unlike Pavarotti. You have to watch his famous performance as Mitridate in Ponnelle's 1986 film/DVD of the opera by 14 year-old Mozart. Not on KZbin, but a few clips of arias are available. A great DG buy, unforgettable.

Why these over words about a tenor, who is barely known outside Sweden's borders.
@SilverSingingMethod10 жыл бұрын
Here we see again that the claims of David Jones and the supposed Swedish Italian technique are highly questionable. Jones claims that part of this technique is based on holding the tip of the tongue behind the bottom teeth. Nilsson said she doesn't, there are clips of Bjoerling where he doesn't and here we see another Swedish guy who doesn't. Watch from 2:07 on. Clearly the tip of the tongue is retracted back and away from the bottom teeth as it should be. Jones is not being truthful or doesn't know better. Sad.

I have always been fond of Mr. Winberg. It started with that I saw his debut at the Big Theater, here in Gothenburg. Of course, my wish was that he would be among the greatedt, but that did not happen. He had a somewhat dumb academic way of singing, maybe that was the obstacle. . Shortness of breath has been mentioned, which is also true

Mozart is completely different singing compared to Puccini. There aren´t a lot of Don Ottavios that sanged the role of Calaf on stage. This is just an aria he sanged to my knowledge he never sanged the role of Calaf. Winbergh had the most success in the german repetoar first with Mozart and later with Wagner. He had a solid technique but his high notes above A-natural was never thrilling. Mozart includes high tessitura but no notes above A-natural and Wagner is similar with a few exceptions. I saw Winbergh in Stockholm 2001 as Lohengrin and he was really, really good, the best tenor in Sweden after Björling, Gedda and Svanholm.
