The instrument is a Nøkkelharpe, folk music instrument used in Norway and Sweden. It is a mix between folk music and rock. They are quite a big band in Norway. The song is based on an old folk tale about a woman being turned into a wolf by her evil steph mother and then breaking free. The chorus is an old calling scream used to gather people and life stock. ❤

Great reaction video - happy you loved it so much ❤️ «Å» is pronounced like English «awe», so Gåte is something like Gawe-teh. And the «u» in Ulveham (wolf skin) is like English «oo», but that was pretty good pronounced 🤓 They are very famous in Norway for their folk music rock and have always been one of our best live bands. The singing in the beginning of the song is "kulokk", tradditionally how we called the cows to us in the contryside some years ago. Some even still use it. The text is telling a 1000 year old folklore story about an evil stepmother cursing her stepdaugter to be a wolf alone in the forrest. And the only way she can break the curse is to drink her brothers blood. In the end she sees her stepmother in the forrest so she attacks and eats her. Turns out her stepmother was pregnant, leading her to drink her brothers blood and breaks the curse. The green light on the stage visualizes the Northern Lights and the smoke can be the snow and visualize the mystery of the forest Love your reaction :) Greetings from Norway

Wow! I'm among the first ones to view and therefore the first to give thumbs on your new reaction video. How great to know that you appreciate this songe. If you wish to pronounce "gåte" correctly think of a regular g-sound as in the English word "gather" then think of the English word "caught", but leave put the "c", so far this gives you "gåt" then for the last sound in that word add the "e" as in the first vowel you find in the English word "else", all together this gives you the perfect pronunciation of: gåte. (Gåte means: riddle). Their song Ulveham means wolf skin. A werewolf is an example of a person in "ulveham", so yeah, the young maiden in the story is transformed into a wolf by her evil and jealous stephmother, that eventually rips her heart out and eats it to break the curse. I can advice you to watch the full version of the song, which is nearly twice the length as the Melodi Grand Prix version which is limited to three minutes. The music genre is (progressive) folk-rock. It's inspired by Norwegian folk music. The instrument is what we call "nøkkelharpe" or "nyckelharpa" as it's called in Swedish and is the name it goes by in English, I believe. This instrument has actually gained status as Sweden's national instrument, which is an instrument that formerly was also much in use hered in Norway centuries ago before being replaced by other instruments. For the beginning of the song you hear "lokking"/"kulokk" as we call it, in English called "kulning" which is a traditional way of calling for your life stock to come down the mountain after finishing grazing. This use of vocal technique has mainly been in used here in Norway and Sweden. I'm glad that you liked the song. The front singer was invited to participate in this music competition last year, but didn't tale the offer. This year she accepted and the song actually isn't made for Eurovision, but goodness me it's a good song also for this competition 😉. @@princeblworld My pleasure !!! 😘When I started writing no other comments yet displayed, as I guess things weren't fully syncronized yet. It takes a little while. So, I explained things which others already had, but without it being visible at my end until later on haha 😁. Sorry about that. This band is well-established and good representatives for folkmusic with a modern touch, where progressive rock and electronica plays a lager or smaller role through the different phases of their band's history. I love the fact they sing in Norwegian. They sing here in a different dialect than their own. It's sung in a dialect from Telemark, while the band itself was established in Trondheim (members are from different places in Trøndelag county) and the man playing the "nøkkelharpe" is from Risør, which is at a different part of the country. (Don't tell anyone, but I went to kindergarten with him and his brother...). Gåte, is an award winning band that made a larger pause after six years before their comeback in 2017. Let's hope they keep making great traditional folk music forever 😁

@@princeblworld Yes, I would say this's my number one favourite song of this year's Melodi Grand Prix. Although I actually liked several other songs nearly as much. Gåte weren't favourites to win according to the betting list before the second semi final performance, but then it all changed. It seems that some of the other participants had been overrared. Saturday is the last semi final, when Keiino will performe as well, so let's see what happens then and if they live up to peopl's expectations. But "Ulveham" has a great winning potential. I would say the best potential of those that already participated in the two first semi finals. Internationally it would get many votes from not only the other Nordic countries, but from elsewhere too as traditional music is close at heart for quite a few people out there and in a modern wrapping it would attract those that enjoys good rock and heavier stuff too. It seems versatile. Having that said I think there are other good contributions as well in our national final, so nothing is decided yet by any means. I'm very pleased that it's going to be a good national final 🎵🎶🥰 the higher number of great songs the better it is!

The voice in the beginning is a old recording of a Woman singinig the original folk song that inspired Gåte to make this song. The original, non ESC-version is twice as long, by the way.

Another example is this short piece titled "Vallåt från Hälsingland" by the Swedish Folk Rock band Garmarna (which the members of Gåte are also a fan of): kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3XYlJiqn8ykr5I By the way, the lyrics of the title track of Garmarna's album "Vedergällningen" tell nearly the same story as the lyrics of "Ulveham", only in those lyrics, it's a boy who is turned into a wolf and not a girl.

Gåte translates to Riddle to anyone wondering. As for "Ulveham".. I'm not sure, "Ulv" translates to wolf at least. She's singing in Old Norse, a language not commonly spoken in modern times and it's more similar to Icelandic than modern day Norwegian

She does not sing in Old Norse. That was our language in the viking times around year 1000. She sings in a conservative form of Norwegian Nynorsk (or a mix with Telemark dialect from the 1800s, when this story is from originally).

Gåte will win for Norway- The letter å-Å is pronounced like the first A in Always. Like the eaux in Bordeaux. The instrument is called Nøkkelharpe - Key Harp. Old traditional Norwegian folk instrument.
