Gåte absolutely killing it! Epic song telling a dark fairy tale about a girl that is an only child being cursed by her stepmother and turned into a wolf, only being able to lift the curse by drinking her brother's blood. Later she kills the stepmother, whom at that point is pregnant despite being an old woman, and thus she tastes the blood of her brother and the curse is lifted.

Gåte’s music is a dark, mesmerizing and stunningly beautiful take on Nordic folk. Where they flirt with elements from traditional Norse and pagan music as well as from more modern genres like rock and industrial. The chorus is a socalled KULOKK, - the maiden calling the cattle in from the the mountains. The roots of this song is a thousand years old.

Eurovision is huge, Will Ferrel learned about it when visiting his inlaws in Sweden and he was mesmerised (the human hamster wheel was one of the things he saw in the first contest he watched). That's why the movie was made, he fell in love with the contest and wanted to make a tribute to it. I am so excited about Gåte representing us this year and I think they will stand out.

Fun fact #1: The song starts with an old recording of a "kulokk" as a sample, which is a traditional Norwegian way of musically calling the free roaming cows, usually to be milked. There are also other types of "lokk" for other animals. The sample was done by Marit Jensen Lillebuen. Fun fact #2: Gåte had to rewrite the lyrics for the song less than a week before the finals, because they were taken from a literally ~1000 years old, medieval folk ballad. And some old sticklers for rules made a fuss about it technically not being an original song because of that. Yet Gåte managed to not only rewrite the song, relearn the song, and perform it even better than before in just those few days - but also win the national finals! Fun fact #3: Although they won the finals, they did so only by a small margin! The other song favoured to win the competition(a generic, catchy, and safe choice pop song called "Damdiggida") got the most votes from the panel of international judges, while "Ulveham" got the most votes from the actual people of Norway. Because the votes were weighted 40/60 in favor of the votes from the people, Norway is able to send a song we can actually be proud of to Eurovision. Fun fact #4: The "crazy instrument" is a key harp("nyckelharpa"), stemming originally from Sweden.

Eurovision is an annual song contest, and a Very Big Thing! It's been going since 1956, and contrary to popular belief it's actually not just European countries that can enter! Morocco, Israel, and Australia are non European countries that have previously entered the contest. I don't know what the exact rules for participation are though. Eurovision has a history of being broadcast in many countries that aren't participating in the event, and for the US this has been the NBC owned streaming platform "Peacock" the last few years. Though as of this comment, no official announcement has been made about the covering 2024 contest, AFAIK.

Besides from Israel, which I think has been a part of it from the start, Australia became the 2nd non European country to participate after they got invited a few years ago. Turkey's partly European, meaning they're not to be considered a non-European participant.
@TheCreativeKobold
@TheCreativeKobold 9 ай бұрын
I honestly didn't know that about Turkey - then again, geography has always been a weak spot for me. ;) Still, Morocco would be the second non European country to enter, seeing as it's an African country and they entered in the 1980 contest, even if it was only the one time thus far. So Australia's actually the third.

Looked it up a bit earlier, and it's because they're members of the European Broadcasting Union, and all member countries of the EBU can participate. Why they haven't participated again is probably for various political reasons, though ranking second to last the one time they participated probably also has something to do with it. Apparently Tunisia was also going to the finals in 1977, but suddenly pulled out without an explanation - though it has been speculated it might've been because of Israel's participation. (Incidentally, Israel first joined in 1973.)
@QueenGry
@QueenGry 9 ай бұрын
@@TheCreativeKobold Thanks so much for the info! There might be financial reasons for pulling out as well, though, as it does cost a fair share of money to enter this contest. From what I've heard, money issues did for instance seem to be an issue for Israel's participation a few years back, so..

Well say hallo to the long lost Vikings. This poem is 1000 years old, now put in a modern vibe. I love it. The instrument is called Nøkkelharpe (Keyharp). Both Norway and Sweden use it in folkmusic. The name of the singer is Gundhild Sundli and her brother, the founder of the band is Sveinung Sundli, the guy in the skirt who plays the guitar. Good review :)

So not to be confused by Varulven (The Werewolf) which is another old scandinavian folkballad, kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHWbfn57eKiXrsUsi=rGwsGWTBXCoBY6Kn

Eurovision is open for member countries in the Eurovision Broadcasting Union. It is first and foremost a song competition, and not a singing competition. All songs have to be original. I don't think many Europeans want it to become a global event. Precisely because it is primarily a European event, it is not much influenced by the American music industry, and has preserved its uniqueness. The winning songs may be about to turn in that direction, but that is only where the jury has influence, because juries can always be bought with money. The people also have a part in the decision, and that helps to preserve the Eurovision spirit. Australia is a participant. They received a special invitation because over many years they have shown great interest in the competition, and have shown it on TV despite the fact that the broadcast is in the middle of the night down there. If you are interested, there are a few videos explaining Eurovision. ESC Hayden and David Bennett Piano versions are made by people with great knowledge about the competition. Benji Blaakilde's version is more to show snippets of songs from different genres/kinds. Geography Now's version is made by Americans, and although it is popular and entertaining, it loses part of the concept.

The song is based on a 1000 year old folklore telling the tale of an evil stepmother who turns her stepdaughter into various items like a needle, sword and horse, for all the people in the kingdom to use. When the stepmother finds out that the people like her she turns her into a wolf and curses her to wander the forrest alone. The only way to break the spell is to drink her brothers blood. One day the wolf finds the stepmother in the forrest and eats her heart, the stepmother was pregnant, therefore she drank her brothers blood and broke the spell. The instrument is called a Nøkkelharpe, key harp. A traditional music instrument. Gunhild also uses "kulokk", in some elements. Which is how the maidens used to call the cows back in the mountains. Thank you for a great review!

it was started after ww2 to help bring a fractured europe together. it is a song competition, not a singer/band one. it is also not always the most impressive song that wins. the whole point is comunity so songs that bring together win. and yes, some times that is the most mindblowing, but it can also be the most partyish song, or the most fun. for an exsample, just see 1st nd 2nd place last year. cha cha cha was the audience favorite. tattoo won combined (it is desided part by judges and part by audience vote), and was by far more i pressive. but cha cha cha was just fun and silly and memorible. there is ofcorce also the troll partisipants. cuntries that want to be part of it, but don’t want the finantial burden of hosting if they win.
