When the leather has a glossy look to it , which means.... it's full of body oils, fabric softener, clothing dies, and environmental dirt /chemicals. You need a leather-safe degreaser WITHOUT conditioner in it to clean those gross seats, doors, dash and steering wheel. Use white microfiber towels. You'll see how gross it is when you clean it....

Can you recommend a proper leather degreaser? My Mazda has shiny seats and I’ve tried Dawn/water and a Griots cleaner, neither of which worked splendidly.

Uric acid causes the glossiness. It's a chemical waste product your body releases when it breaks down purines...which are in alcohol. So if you look at a used car and the steering wheel in particular is super shiny... It means that car was owned by an alcoholic.

I have a '98 G Puch. It's amazing. 180K mile daily driver, and hardly anything ever goes wrong with it. Simple enough to do much of my own maintenance, but still with modern tech. It actually feels like it's built well, unlike most cars these days. 3x locking diffs from the factory, and luxury interior. People who buy these and old Rovers like the agricultural feel because it feels real. New cars all feel the same, these are unique. The small size is because it's not made for the Super-Size Me generation, and the people who think size matters. It actually fits down trails, and between trees. You aren't on a couch. You're driving a car. You shouldn't have a foot of space on each side of you when sitting in the seat. The one I was looking at was a 2017 with I think 58,000 miles and the transfer case as well as rear diff were seeping and moist and I could smell coolant. It was a one owner, dealer serviced vehicle for sale at the same Mercedes dealer that car fax showed it was originally sold at and serviced at. What I know about those vehicles mechanically would not fill a thimble. However, when I was stationed in what was then West Germany, I saw any number of the military versions stuck nearly up their door handles. To be fair though, the CUTVs (Chevrolet Utility Vehicles) or Blazers if you prefer had the same problem. Oddly enough, the little M151A1 "jeeps" seemed better at bulling their way through in the same muddy conditions that brought both the German and American "SUVs" to a slimy halt. I'm pretty sure though that it was a weight difference between the three types of vehicles that gave our "jeeps" the upper hand in those mud bogs. By the way, when either the German or American SUVs got really, really stuck we often had to utilize our APCs or even tanks to extricate them.

Yes a thermostat job on an M278/M157 will cascade into a water pump + turbo coolant lines. Well, you CAN just replace the thermostat but you'll be back in there for the other stuff. The thermostat itself is around $300 and that's an internet price at a dealer (approx 30% discount). Take a look at the water pump pulley. If it is backing off the pump (moving forward) you really want to replace that while you're in there. Why? Because you will most likely destroy that expensive thermostat when you are back in to do the WP.

The average working class Joe (or Jane) would be well advised to avoid a potential money trap like an eight year old G Wagon. Without a warranty, even the cost of regular maintenance is prohibitive. This is not a vehicle that you bring to your local service station for Bubba to wrench on; these things require highly trained mechanics with very expensive equipment. And even the smallest of their often bespoke replacement parts are eye wateringly expensive. With electrical issues you're looking at well over $200 an hour in diagnostic time alone. But if you paid $58,000 and find yourself in need of major engine or transmission work, unless you have some very deep pockets you're more than likely to be taking out a, "Doesn't Run / Sold As Is" add on your favorite website for online vehicle sales. You could very easily end up parting it off for pennies on the dollar. Unless you have the means and the wherewithal to buck the odds and roll those dice, my advice is, "Run AWAY!"

@@YuppieMulletsI haven’t seen a g wagon on the road for 6 months but navigators I see every day. Realistically the only Mercedes I would buy would be a r129.

How does it compare to the grenadier? Aren’t they built on similar or same platform?
@dirtandhappiness202323 күн бұрын
Same factory, but they don't share any hardware. The Greni is definitely similar, but the steering is quite, uh, unique. I'd choose a used G-Wagon over a new Greni if the prices were similar.

Friend of mine is the Head Tech at the local Merc dealership. He says all G Wagons are complete shit. The engines are hand built and all hand built Merc engines (even AMG) are terrible. I am sure that will anger the devout out there.

What are you talking about?? Handbuilt doesn't automatically mean worse. 95% of all engines, regardless of manufacturer have their own "known" little niggles and problems that creep up with age and use, and this twin turbo V8 is no different. Once they're taken care of, it'll run proper for a long time. There's AMG cars with this engine over 3-400k miles. But if we're talking AMG engines specifically, the most reliable ones are the M113 and M113K supercharged V8s from the early to late 2000s. That's why G wagons with those motors command sizeable premiums and are highly sought after in the used market

Interesting color as that vehicle will BLEED YOUR WALLET DRY! That being said, it really is a lovely, albeit niche, vehicle.

Are you basing that statement on personal ownership with a G or you just talking out your keyboard ass?
@LukeEdward24 күн бұрын
@@donleamon8653 very applicable and warranted question. Own, nope. Personal friends with a head master mechanic, who is also one of the few certified to work on McLarens, and AMG gulwing cars. Highly trained and decades of experience, who was sired in the second largest ultra luxury markets since the early 2000’s. So, yes, anecdotal, but certainly “qualified” evidence. Also, it doesn’t take a master mechanic’s knowledge to be able to see what “A” & “B” services, service intervals, and parts expense all cost. Please keep your pants zipped up, we’re not impressed.

@@donleamon8653I ask the same question because it’s genuinely warranted. But I don’t get mean or personal. If someone genuinely has personal experience, then I do, genuinely want to hear it. All you want to do is be confrontational. Go cry alone. You get no more today.

I just bought a fake kislux and I love the fact that I didn't have to spend 3-4k on it. Yes, it's beautiful, but it's just a bag and no one cares if it's real or fake. I have a lot of real stuff that no one cares about.
