G wagon facts : This was first commissioned by the Shah of Iran, who was at the time a significant shareholder of Mercedes. Regarding many articles on the internet yes ! The genesis for the G-Wagon came out of an unrelated but massive 20,000-truck order from the Shah of Iran in the 1970s. A significant shareholder in Mercedes at the time, the Shah's order also stood for a tempting deal. To fulfill the Shah's requirements, the carmaker required external help in its production phase. This led to Mercedes collaborating with Steyr-Daimler-Puch, a military equipment manufacturer based in Austria. SDP built famous war machines like the Pinzgauer, a military transport with available 6-wheel drive systems. Mercedes further extended this collaboration when the Shah suggested that the vehicle be built as an all-wheel-drive SUV for military use in his empire

As a Sergent in RDAF (Royal Danish Air Force) we used these a lot for recon. However....This was in 1990, and they were more like a tractor. Very very agricultural and basic. With a 5 cylinder non turbo diesel engine at about 100hp, the speed was also very agricultural. The upside was, that you could repair them with a brick and a piece of wire.

Mercedes spent A LOT Of money getting those on- wing indicator lights EU compliant for the face lift model. They wanted to keep the traditional look , which was very difficult with the new crash regs. That's why there's no screws anymore.

It was a one owner California (rust free) vehicle in near new condition (its only issue is the front passenger window goes up a bit slow). I think I've laid hands on everything in the current lineup. The G-Wagen just feels two cuts above everything else. You can tell they put real effort into the little things and held themselves to a high standard. A lot has to do with how things on the body/interior feel when you interact with them. It really gives you the impression of solidity that you hear so often about.

Mercedes in general has a ton of electric problems that start happening when the vehicle gets old. A lot of the upgrades though, with the exception of the engine, from the old gwagon to the new one are really easy to put inside the old g wagon for little cost. It might be better to get the old one. Put in some nice upgrades, learn about your car and go from there.

There's a saying in the 4X4community: "one gets two types of 4X4 owners - the one's that owns a Gelandewagen, and the one's that WANTS to own a Gelandewagen". (The G-Wagon was also the very 1st 4X4 to offer from and rear diff-locks to the civilian market - something Land Rover haven't figured out yet...) Anyway, great test!!! Looking forward to part 2 of this test going off-road ;-) Regards from South Africa.

The development of the G-Class started in 1972 with a cooperative agreement between Daimler-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria. The W460 was introduced at a press event held at the off-road proving ground in Toulon, France, and went on sale in September 1979 with three engine choices and five body variants. The first-generation M-Class, designated under the model code W163 is a body-on-frame SUV where production moved to the U.S. plant near Vance, Alabama. Since the original G-Wagon was more utilitarian vehicle, Mercedes had to make the M-Class more car-like for the US Market (No exposed door hinges for example). When I heard they were bringing the G-Wagon back as utilitarian as the version in the 70's( with only a few upgrades) and they expected people to pay many time more then the current GLE line( with is still more suited for the US market, you're not going off-road, you' re going to Whole Foods.).I said to myself nobody who Googled the previous would be ignorant enough to pay that much. I was wrong. The people who fell for this don't research. THEY FOLLOW.

@@damilolaakanni Perhaps. But so much more make the G much bigger than many cars. Width is a big factor, and the G63 is 199 cm wide without mirrors. Very few cars are that wide. Reality is that outside of a Burp or Yukon XL, few SUV's are as big. Length is rarely an issue when you live with a car, but width is. Not quite sure how he adjusted the seats in this video, but rear legroom is plenty big in the back of the current G63. He is tall, but even for his height he seems to have long legs. Wondering if he was just trying to find something interesting to say.
