A little fun fact about the G36 I always like to share: The G36 has a bayonet lug, but not for the ones the M16 uses, but for the AK series. The reason for this is, after the reunion of East and West Germany, East Germany had warehouses full of AK bayonets, but to safe money, instead of throwing them away, they repurposed them for the G36

When we had training with G36 in the Bundeswehr, our instructors would tell us that the G36 is also a reservists rifle. It was easy to train people on it, as you could use the dual optic to ease up the getting a target, you would point the red dot onto your target and change the optic, so the ZF optic (longer range) would already be there. Apart from that it was a very nice gun to work with. We felt remarkebly cool, if we cooked it by using our hands to slap on the charging handle, rather than pulling it sideways and then back.

@alexandertheok96104 ай бұрын
(overheating and ammunition sensitivity have a common cause: the lack of a casing, which usually has the strength to withstand any handling and heat, and absorbs a majority of the heat from firing the propellant, thus reducing heating of the chamber)
@DSlyde4 ай бұрын
@@alexandertheok9610 no, the casing does not absorb the majority of the heat. That's the common misconception about overheating I was talking about, but its a fairly lightweight piece of brass, even if it does get hot enough to burn skin it only absorbs a single digit percentage of the heat generated. What the case does do is spread out heat transfer from the chamber and prevent heat localisations from igniting the propellant even when the average chamber temperature is lower than the nominal cook off temperature. This is why making the ammunition less sensitive solved the issue, while if cases absorbed the majority of the heat you'd see other issues with overheatinf stick around.
@eazy85794 ай бұрын
@@DSlydethat’s a real long way to say absolutely nothing of substance; if you read the original documentation, overheating of cartridges was an issue in the G11, including both Cook offs and decomposition of the ammunition due to heat. This was solved certainly, but it was an issue for a while
@DSlyde4 ай бұрын
no it's the difference between a fundamental problem with the concept and an issue already solved 40+ years ago. I have read the documentation, including the documents that originate some of the misconceptions and the ones that attempt to correct them. Calling it overheating is like saying your PC overheated because you took a blowtorch to your power cord. Did part of it technically get hotter than intended? Yes. Would every decision made on the issue being reported as "due to overheating" be wrong? Also yes. Also the preHITP propellant blocks didn't decompose at any temperature that traditional propellant wouldn't, because chemically it was traditional propellant.

The continued idea that there's a "controversy" around the rifle is more of a controversy than its actual performance. Ian McCollum of Forgotten Weapons has a good video summarizing the issue. Essentially, competitors of H&K presented anecdotes that had never been tested and out-of-context information to try to portray the rifle as worse than it was -- perhaps so that their own rifle might be chosen by the Bundeswehr instead. An example is the claim that, after a period of sustained fire, the G36 is not as accurate as it was when it was cooler, and that it shoots in a wider group. But this claim relies on the audience on not knowing that every other infantry rifle experiences the exact same thing -- because shooting is hot, and metal barrels expand when heated.
@TheIIIJulianIII9 ай бұрын
To add on to that, the "sustained fire" was equal to like ten magazines being emptied in a row, something that does not happen in real life situations in the first place.
@LightningNC9 ай бұрын
@@TheIIIJulianIII Exactly.
@TrueChaoSclx9 ай бұрын
Yup. And another issue is that many of these problems are with the optic being polymer mounted on polymer, meaning that if you were to lean it too hard against something, it can flex, messing with your zero. This issue with the gun retaining zero doesn't exist on any of the more modern versions or any version using a rail as opposed to the original dual optic. So bringing up the issue with it not holding zero is like saying the AR15 is criticized for its lack of reliability and basing that entirely on its performance in Vietnam.
@HD_HerpDerp9 ай бұрын
honestly the fact that Ahoy mentions the controversy but doesn't mention the fact it was basically just a hit piece makes me question how much research he actually does for these videos. This is the most surface-level research into the subject, like he just read off the Wikipedia page. ... So, I just went onto Wikipedia to check and just as I suspected, most of the information presented in this video is straight from the Wikipedia page, including the order in which he presents the variants, no mention of the more commonly known 'E' export-variants as the page has already renamed them to 'V', and the lack of discussion regarding the actual reason for the controversy since that is also missing from the Wiki page. He also doesn't mention the SL9 variant because it isn't mentioned on the G36's page and is only found on the SL8's own Wikipedia article. All this seems like a rather bold creative choice considering Internet Historian was caught reading off articles only a month ago.

But it was fairly light, ergonomic, foldable stock was really usefull when having it on the back via belt (I was a mortarman). In the range it was fairly accurate, more than enough for a draftee, and it was fairly easy to dissasemble and clean (you push out a few pins to remove the handle, magazine guard, remove back end with spring, and the lock slides right out). It seldom got stuck, parts fit really nicelly, and all around, it is more than adequate rifle. One thing that games do not use is the safety. Safety/fire select was on both sides of the handle, really comfortable to use with both your thumb and index finger (when having index/trigger finger extended, it is just in place to switch to safe). fair to say, ergonomics were intuitive. The g36 melting barrel problem is overblown. The rifle had sacrificed sustained fire for weight from the start. When other manufacturers were asked to make something as light, but better for sustained fire, they were not able to.

The barrels don’t melt, the receiver warps under sustained extreme heat . Thats what they were running into in Afghanistan, they had horrible accuracy issues because the rifles were already hot due to the conditions of the Middle East and then any continuous use would result in ever so slight warping in the receivers that over time would mean the barrels would shift enough to cause noticeable accuracy issues especially when used with an optic. To be fair, they were never designed to be used in those conditions.

The melting plastic was less of an issue compared to its pencil-weight barrel not being up to snuff. Barrel forging technology wasn't as advanced in the '90s as it is now, and so it would lose accuracy faster while firing. It could have served a lot longer than it did, had they just given them modern barrels.

That's absolutely not true. Colt and Diemaco rifles were in high demand due to their excellent reputation with quality control. AR manufacturers still press barrels the same way it has been done forever.

Wasn't the whole issue an overblown, dramaticized political maneuver and not ever an actual problem in the first place?

@@yum9918 Firstly that and also: When HK got the Requierements for the new Rifles it said "suitable for the european Theater and Climate"- Noone was talking about Desert Warfare. Therefore they delivered what they were asked for. I also never ran into Issues with the G36 and i got a couple Thousand Rounds spent on the Platform. Also Haenel was bought by arab Investors so i personally think Kickbacks were involved in the Desicion to award Haenel with the Contract without giving HK the Option to come up with something better.

@@yum9918 Well, I wouldn't say overblown, but... dumb? As far as I understand the situation, the Germans wanted a really light rifle. The only way to meet that spec was for the tons of plastic design. Long term fire wasn't a part of the spec, so when it did come up, well obviously the rifle had some issues. HK did their work and delivered what the government wanted. However the government wasn't realistic in what they desired.

Not really, the G36 was designed to be light, so the Barrel had to be light, which results in it heating up faster and therefore losing accuracy. The whole thing is normal and happens to all rifles (and most of them loose accuracy sooner and/or harder) Forgotten Weapons or InRange-TV did a test with one, that had been assembled completely from original Bundeswehr parts with an original and therefore used barrel and did a test and throughout the whole test it was more accurate than it needed to be. The warping of the plastic body does absolutely nothing as the sights and rails aren't affected, the German government even lost a lawsuit because they sued H&K over both points and H&K proved that none of those were an issue. Also in a Heavy dust test conducted by the US-Army the G36 could shoot over twice as many rounds between failures than both the Scar-H and the H&K 416 and over five times as many rounds between failures than the M4 (mind you the M4 already passed said test) But the optics are crap, sadly that is to be expected from H&K

The G36 had many excellent features that were not rivaled in its time, ‘97-‘06, by the M4/M16. However, take away the overemphasis on ambidexterity and tolerate a much worse trigger and the Steyr AUG accomplishes everything the G36 did but in a shorter package, with a quick change barrel system, over a decade earlier.

Ahoy is back! What can I say about the G36? Honestly, if there's something HK is really good at that is to materialize and deliver exactly what you asked for, even if the end result turns out to be not that good, or quirky, or far from perfect. One example is the Mark 23 pistol (Ahoy, you SHOULD make a video about this pistol as it's a cult classic): It's an Offensive Handgun Weapon System (damn, that's a mouthful), requested by the big honchos from US SOCOM (even the pistol ends up having SOCOM as part of its name), and the requirements were pretty stringent. HK delivered and wiped the floor with its competitors. Still, US SOCOM and the poor sods that ended up using that thing, complained that it was too big, overengineered, overbuilt, they nicknamed it "the first crew served pistol". Probably HK's answer to those complaints was: "You never asked it to be compact or to have few parts*." The G36 is no different, the german goverment got what they asked for. Maybe if HK added some steel reinforcements on the barrel trunnion, maybe it would withstand more sustained fullauto fire. Still, the G36 was a harbinger, if not THE HARBINGER, of the new era of assault rifles. At its core is an AR-18 style of action (and one that doesn't suck like the Sa80 or doesn't feel like it was put together in a garage or small workshop like the original Armalite AR18), but It definitely inspired guns like FN F2000, FN SCAR, Magpul Masada/Bushmaster ACR, CZ Brno 805, IWI Tavor, HS VHS-2, etc. *Don't request HK to design and build a pistol with as few parts as possible or else you get something like VP70, which looks good on paper (and cool in movies and videogames), but is atrocious in practice. Oh, that another piece of work worth of an Ahoy video.
@ArtjomKoslow9 ай бұрын
As you said: HK delivered as ordered. When the Order was made the Government asked for a cheap, reliable Gun suited for the European Theater and Climate. Noone said anything about fighting Insurgents in hot Deserts.
@Xerxes16889 ай бұрын
@@ArtjomKoslow Yep, after all, "NO COMPROMISE" is HK's slogan. The PSG-1 precision rifle is yet another example of their no compromise, you get what you asked for policy. The West Germany government wanted a 7.62 caliber semiauto rifle to be as accurate as possible, and they got it. HK delivered, but instead of developing a rifle from the ground up (like Walther did with the WA2000, or like the soviets did with the Dragunov SVD), they took the G3 as a basis, heavily modify it to the point that is almost a completely different rifle, but for all that turd polishing effort, they were able to come up with a 7.62 NATO semiauto rifle capable to shooting 50 rounds of match grade ammo and make it group 1 MOA at 300 meters, but all that at the expense of being bulky, heavy, very expensive, having welded on (thus non removable) scope rings and mount and a price tag of 10.000 US dollars when it came out. At least, it's less outlandish that the Walther WA2000 and it uses the readily available G3 magazines.

The dual-optic of the G-36, is in my opinion, it's best feature, once it gives the operator a versatility that no other hybrid optic system can acheive. What I mean is that by having a see-through carry handle with the hability to mout a scope above it, you can, very accurately engage targets, from point blank range to hundreds of meters within the same gun. The reason for that is simple: you can mount higher up an LPVO (Low Power Variable Optics) or even a sniper scope, zeroed for long range engagemants, and at the same time have a low power scope zeroed for just a few meaters and quickly and easely transition between them, depending on target's distance. It's also more confortable than twisting a gun 45 degree to the side (in case of Offset Optics) or looking to an overbore (above the Scope) Red Dot, that tends to be innacurate at targets at distaces below it's zeroing distance. When dealing with close range, the lowest bore axis, the better, while having a long range Optics located high bore axis, allow the shooter to compensate eventual bullet drop and see a little bit further, without the barrel of the gun obstructing part of field of view.
@berbtheherb7 ай бұрын
the integrated dual-optic is a piece of shit the red dot sight is wholly outdated with no nightfighting capability, the sight window is smaller than a penny, the dot itself is too large, and it is not bright enough for bright days not to mention the insane height over bore. the scope has terrible eye relief, insane issues holding zero and fogging up
