This is proving everyday to be an effective and reliable round. I know more and more police agencies are using the G9 round as their duty ammo. I know most recently, Montezuma Police Department out of Georgia is exclusively using this, and Shane Gosa, who is a member of that agency, wrote an extensive write-up on the G9 and its incredible effectiveness on real world threats, and he quotes: "...and has been proven in actual street encounters (which G9 has)." They have the data and they've seen the damage this bullet does. There is NO question as to whether this round is lethal or not and does what is says it will do 100% of the time every single time.

I have 38 Special +P loads with 140 gr Lehigh defenders at 1000 fps for my Taurus 605 carry gun. From what I've seen they act like a hollow point for the temporary cavity, aren't affected by "barrier" and penetrate more than a like-weight/velocity HP. ETA - wow the temporary cavities of these are very impressive. - always enjoy your vids.

I filmed another video of Gold Dot VS G9 Vs Xtreme Defender but in .380 ACP. I felt in that test, the results between the copper fluted rounds were the opposite results. That being said, the standard pressure Underwood version had a good 50 ft lbs more energy behind it so maybe that is why.

They both perform about the same but g9 is the better bullet with excellent customer support. They also have the better 45 acp load. Sometimes g9 ammo deal sale codes make it significantly cheaper than underwood. G9 has specifically designed their ammo to never pierce through 3a armor lethally which I personally don't like. Underwood is the better loader and can be cheaper sometimes and wins no doubt in 9mm and 10mm with much better performance not because of bullet shape, but because of loading and bullet weight

Very Nice review Gun Sam! If you ever get a chance to do the direct comparison between LeHigh Defense Extreme Defender directly to the G9 ammo it would be awesome. It would be great to see them side by side. I do believe you when you say the LeHigh tends to become less accurate over distance. I remember you saying that before. Its just very visual seeing them both tested together. I will definitely be looking for G9 Defense in 380acp now. As you know 380 has a definite problem with not quite enough mass and speed as 9mm for a expanding Hollowpoint round. ARX and Le High Defense and G9, etc. all have these solid bullets that are not restrained by expansion though. Your testing is always a huge help when looking at defensive ammo choices, Thanks again, to you and observer Will!

If I'm ever stuck with having to carry my 9mm, I'll just stick with my 124gr HSTs of the +p variety. Hopefully I'll never be stuck with a 9mm because I just don't feel safe with 8 rounds of the little 9. I much prefer my 45 acp with the 200 gr V Crowns or one of my 230 gr Punch or Rangers. I'd much rather have 9 rounds of 45 than 15 rounds of 9mm. That's just my personal choice of course. Honestly, the 357 Sig is superior to the 9mm and 45 acp . You've proven that several times. You're the first person to actually get me interested in the 357 Sig. I hope to own one someday, so thanks for the testing and information about a great cartridge.

This ammo veers a little to the left. Learned the hard way when i bought a good amount of boxes to test. Aiming center mass and you'll get the bullets veering to the left slightly every ti.e. This ammo is now a no-go for me and I will stick with HST. The reason this is a lroblem for me is because i would then need to buy more boxes of this ammo (which is super expensive) to train with and adjust my shooting sight picture to account for adjustment of the veering so it aims center mass. Not worth that adjustment, money, and time changing up my training. Just stick with good ol' HST

If you watch ballistic high speed they have a good video showing the XD round and it fails to make continuous contact as it passes through. An air pocket forms in front of the bullet and it starts to tumble. Basically, its a flawed test at that point. No one seems to be talking about this but it should be a flaw all ballistic testers should be very concerned with.

It is something I am aware of to some degree. I have not seen that video, but I have said that I am skeptical as I can poke a football pump in gel and create that same damage. I often tell people that the damage that seems to be from air, I cannot comment on if it really does well in the real world as there's no real world data to cross reference, but the damage in gel with hollow points tends to be from petals cutting, which we can take at face value.

I just found stock of Atomic Ammunition 380 ACP 90 Gr. in nickel plated cases. Its rated at 1100fps and actually seems to be close to its rating too. It did amazingly well in another UTube Ammo testers reviews, in his gel tests with heavy denim. Like Federal HST Deep 380, its been very hard to find stock of this until now. Its 21.99 for 20 round boxes so its very affordable for a HP 380 defensive round that easily hits 12"+ in gel. Just wanted to pass this on to you. Until now all I could get that I wanted was Underwoods LeHigh Defense loads in 380.

Interesting results. I velocity tested some of their "+P factory seconds" out of my P365 last August. I shot a 10 round average and through a 3.1" barrel, I was getting on average 1468 fps. Kinda funny that I'm getting the exact same values you did,. The faster, lighter round is definitely noticeable when shooting out to distance at like 50 or further. Bit flatter shooting vs the slower, heavier rounds more commonly available. It's definitely not something I would regularly train with given the price, but occasionally and for a CCW piece? I'd feel pretty confident with it at least.

I can see the advantage of these in 9mm over the XD's, but I've done a split screen comparison between the cavitation in this video and the 68gr XD's in 357 Sig, and the XD's definitely show a greater degree of cavitation. You never know. A lot of people are under the assumption that more barrel means hundreds of FPS more. Often times depending on the ammo that's not the case. You can't make something weak becomes a ton more powerful with more barrel. I can't comment on something as obscure as this ammo, but I don't honestly think the increase would add much added effect. Most 9mm+P ammo gains 50% more than 400 ft lbs energy from a pistol to carbine, 400 to 600 ft lbs. It's not amazing. Something like a .357 Mag from 4" revolver to carbine with hot ammo is more like 600 ft lbs increasing to 1,200, and that's a lot more.

@GunSam
@GunSam Жыл бұрын
The bullet diameters are similar between the two calibers. In terms of foot lbs energy in duty size guns (5" semi auto VS 4" revolver) you usually are around 400-450 with the 9mm+P and 500-600 with .357 Magnum. The one main difference is that .357 Magnum will support heavier bullets with full power like 140, 158, 180 gr will still have 500-600 ft lbs energy but 9mm starts getting weaker and weaker with more bullet weight. Like 115 gr+P+ has more power than 124 gr+P+, the 135 gr has less power than 124 gr and 147 gr is super weak. A 147 gr 9mm+P will max out at like 350 ft lbs energy and a 158 gr .357 Mag as much as 700 ft lbs energy, but when you go down to 110 gr .357 Mag VS 115 gr+P+ 9mm you can get similar energy.

@@GunSam ok...no comparison at all👍
@GunSam
@GunSam Жыл бұрын
In terms of the actual cartridge, a 9mm or even a 9mm+P out of a carbine might hit 600 ft lbs energy as where a .357 Magnum is easily over 1,000 ft lbs energy. The real comparison comes when a 2" .357 Mag snub nose is used, as often times the energy is at around 400 ft lbs which is about the same energy as 9mm+P in about the same size firearm. The .357 Mag has twice the recoil in guns that small though.

Would you recommend the G9 EHP +P 80gr or Speer gold dot short barrel +P 124gr for a 3.75in barrel? From your test it seems I would get close to the advertised velocity for the G9, and the Speer advertises 1150fps from a 3.5in barrel. My concern with the G9 is that it will tumble like it did in your test with the shorter barrel.

Can't say I agree. There's not really much real world data on how they perform against bad guys. There's a good chance they wouldn't work that great, but until I see some data, one thing I can say is that hollow points do work so I am going to keep using them.

★ (2nd post) In your opinion, could you see hardcast, if possible, benefiting from that design at traditional bullet weights and average or +p velocities? Or, is that even a reasonable question?
@GunSam
@GunSam Жыл бұрын
I would imagine that the bullet would deform significantly enough that the flutes wouldn't work all that well. Most of your bullet lead is something around 5-10 Brinell hardness, hard cast is generally somewhere in the 15 range as where copper is twice as hard as hard cast lead. I think part of the design that isn't talked about is the Xtreme bullets are often in 9mm, about 65 to 90 gr as where the Xtreme Penetrator bullet is 115 gr. It's no coincidence that the heavy one goes deeper, so the flutes are sort of an afterthought that help a tad to slow the bullet down. Even though the Xtreme Defender and Xtreme Penetrator have different flute designs, if you made that 115 gr have the same flute pattern as the Xtreme Defender, I think it would still over-penetrate. So my answer is no, because the flutes would probably crush, and even if they didn't the weight would be too high to slow down and not over-penetrate.

Great video!! I’ve got a question for the group. I just bought myself a S&W FPC, and now I’m trying to figure out the best ammo to use. Does anyone have an opinion, or better yet, any first hand experiences with the S&W FPC and this ammo? With the long 16” barrel, and so many more barrel twists than a compact or subcompact, I’m thinking it will work very well, but I don’t know for sure. Any thoughts or opinions?

They are $29.69 for 20 rounds on the cheapest website, others are $30-$32 or so. Most of Underwood's Xtreme ammo is $29.50 on their website, other retailers have it for as cheap as $21.33 depending on the website. Your strong suit is not math as $21.33 times two is $42.66, which is more than $29.69.

@@franklinmarks7845 If you want an ammo that seems to not perform quite as well to save your life with, and that $8.36 more for G9 is way too expensive for your life, than all I can say is it's your life, not mine. I am not saying that in the real world one is better than the other, but even if they are all the same why are we here debating what is or isn't good enough for your life saving equipment when it's all over $8.36?

Someone said the one specific example was from a real world crime show, like the First 48 or something like that. They said the dead body contained an "extra lethal bullet" or something like that (you know how the anti-gun agenda spins things) and coming out of the body it was fully expanded to the typical massive 3/4" thing that they often do in gel.

Not great for self defense short barrel compacts! Full size pistols I’m liking what I’m seeing.Don’t worry about missing from 100 yards. How would you explain fearing for your life if their that far away? The biggest problem I can’t find these anywhere I’ve looked. Mel Gibson is the only one who shoots better at 100 yards 😂🤣
@GunSam
@GunSam Жыл бұрын
The way I have always seen it, is that I would gladly explain I feared for others' lives. The only reason I would shoot that far would be at a very clear mass shooter in a big area like a parking lot or mall or whatever. The distance of 100 yards looks really close in an urban environment, if you asked someone how far away this or that is in a Walmart parking lot, they would probably say 100 feet if in reality it was 300 feet away.
@allenbolen9705

@@GunSam I can understand that but wow need a great backstop. You would have to worry about the public. You probably wouldn’t have a 5 inch barrel at a mall would you? I did some shooting from 50 yards with my Canik with a 4.07 inch barrel. I was happy to hit from that distance. Now I’m going to try 75 yards. If it’s 100 yards I’ll grab my deer 🦌 rifle.
