Picked up some of these, will be working remote along the northern border and need some peace of mind. Got some of their hollow-points as well.

Any cartridge branded as "woodsman" or "outdoorsman" or the like is intended as a defensive/hunting round against wild animals where penetration is key and for some reason you want to carry a 9mm instead of a 10mm or high powered revolver. This is not a standard self defense cartridge against bad guys

Depends on the bear. Black bear 10mm. Anything bigger just get a .44. 9mm with hardcast I’d go up to a mountain lion they’re like 180lbs. Places where I camp that’s all I need to worry about.

The Extreme Penetrator 90gr in 9mm is a different round than the Extreme Defender round. Underwood designed them to have different terminal performances. The Extreme Penetrator 90 gr in 9mm is what I carried to handle dogs in my area that nearly killed our dog and almost attacked me several times.
@LukeBrownSM6 ай бұрын
I understand your rationale, but even large dogs require the same or less penetration to put down than men do, and are very seldom wearing heavy clothing or anything of that nature. At most a thick fur coat, which I doubt most high quality 9mm JHP/Lehigh XD/G9 EHP rounds would have any trouble with. I'd argue that rounds designed for defense against humans are best suited for dogs, as opposed to rounds designed for defense against large animals.

I noticed that no real mention of a wound track. The Xtreme Penetrators do leave a track in gel and flesh as I have taken deer with the XPs. That is a good size bullet and should be about 147gr size because of the copper. I have considered the Woodsman for hunting, but the lack of wound channel is concerning.

Look up 10mm vs 9mm for bear defense. Vortex did a comparison using buffalo boar ammo and 9mm went about half an inch further in ballistic gel. They also shot a ballistic grizzly bear head and both went all the way through

.454 casull has been noted to be the pistol in Alaska, but 10mm should easily accomplish the task with a great chance of you walking away if your shot was on target. Don’t forget, these bear can run about 35 mph and longer than you can run 8 in the woods. That means they will cover 50 ft at full gallop in a second. I read where a guy who lived there said if the bear is a 100 yards away and really wants you , he will get to you. There was a video of a guy trying to evade a bear and was videotaping his effort until he concluded it was too late and he shut off the video so no video of his actual death that occurred.

Thanks for your gel test. Looks like a decent round. I would expect a little bit of expansion. But with the shorter barrel it might not. Usually most rounds seem to perform better in a Longer barrel.
@andrewmconrad Жыл бұрын
I was pleasantly surprised with this test. Recoil was manageable, penetration was good.
@TriggerHappy007 Жыл бұрын
These rounds are designed to penetrate things like bulletproof glass or a vest.. they are not meant to expand at all they're meant to punch through anything you shoot at. These are by far one of the most dangerous rounds on the market. It will punch right through an engine block it will go right through a bulletproof vest unless you use steel and even then your going to wish you were dead if you were shot with this. This kind of ammunition falls underneath the Xtreme penetrator category
@Man_Emperor_of_Mankind Жыл бұрын
On a copper solid with a solid point, it's not going to expand against anything softer than iron. They went with a copper sold to prevent deformation, otherwise a lead core bullet would have hit the same depth in gel at a fraction of the cost

Pressure doesn't necessarily translate to velocity. If I use a slow-burning powder loaded to std pressure spec, it will shoot faster than if I use a fast-burning powder loaded to +P spec. If I load with a slow powder to +P spec, then things get interesting. Handloading, baby

There's another issue - pure copper weighs less than the same volume of lead. That means a copper slug of the same weight as a lead slug will be bulkier and leave less room for powder and case capacity, dropping the velocity. This particular bullet design will have a fair amount of its weight out front, so it *should* leave lots of room for powder as opposed to other 124gr copper slugs. 1100fps from a 3" barrel is pretty good for a 124+p.

Seems like the 124gr NATO load that's basically a +p, would be the obvious choice. Though copper solids do have an advantage in retaining their shape/not deforming. It may perform more consistently with a bone strike than a lead core bullet would

That's what this ammo is designed to do it is designed to fly through that is why it has an external hollow point nipple which means it'll punch right through a bulletproof vest!
