Great video, did you have to show proof of onward travel to enter India?
@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 7 жыл бұрын
Good question, I should have covered that in the video as well. No, I didn't have an onward flight and it wasn't a problem. But I have the 10-year visa that Americans can get. For the 30-day e-visa they might ask for proof of an onward flight. I'm not sure how strict they are since I haven't done it myself, but for that one I would say it's best to have the onward flight booked.

I used the 30 day evisa and was not asked for an onward ticket. In fact, they got my birthday wrong and I flew there panicked they would not let me in, and it wasnt even mentioned. i had no issues.

I had 30 days Indian Evisa(USA passport) , flew from Bangkok to Kolkata, indigo airlines would not let me fly without onward ticket. So I had to purchase one quickly at the airport, not fun.

Thanks for those two different personal experiences guys, sounds like it's variable, better to have the onward flight booked already. There are cheap flights through Air Asia to Thailand and elsewhere so that's a good place to check. Also you could try skyscanner, plug in "Everywhere" and then it will show you the cheapest flights possible all over the world.

Disclaimer: All the things, which were spoken, about India in the latter half video are TRUE. INDIA is a quintessential paradox in itself. One Tip, I would like to suggest, just say "NO" in a soft tone, and most of the Indians won't bother you, and an educated Indian is as good as any other guy in a western country. Thanks Gabriel for sharing your experiences, Cheers!

Very well said Tejasvi Joshi. Additionally it's a matter of fact that people's behaviour depends on the way they are bought up since their Childhood rather than the degrees they hold. So if you need some help look out for GOod people rather than someone with "MACAULAY SYNDROME" LOL:)

Gabriel, your video was informative. Me being an Indian myself - I have seen so much improvement in the last 4 years within my country. Also an information for foreign tourists booking tickets on train. The Indian railways have special quota for foreigners travelling to India where even if a train is fully booked, you can find a seat under this quota. Visit www.irctc.co.in and register as a foreigner to avail this facility. Also people of this country are super helpful. In Indian culture there is a saying "Atithi Devo Bhava" - Guest is God. Enjoy your trip to India

I had arrived in India several years ago, I was escorting my mother inlaw back to her home and to visit my wife's family. I forgot that my 10 year Indian visa was in my previous passport until I arrived in India. I was not allowed to come into the country and was required to get the next plane out of India at my cost. The Airlines are required to check that I have a visa/passport prior to my departure but that fell through the cracks. Aside from the cost, the 48 hours plus of travel was very very arduous. Now I have read they have a visa upon arrival at some airports. I forget the specifics but it sure would have been nice to have that option when this happened. PS A video idea, 2nd class train "Never" I had a nightmare experience riding in a 2nd class train car, I took a wrong train and when I realized I was heading in the wrong direction (a police man told me that was my train) in order to get back my only choice was to take a 2nd class train car. The train was packed like sardines and a group of eunuchs were in there demanding rupees from each traveler, if they didn't pay they would assault them. I refused to pay and I'm big enough they squeezed on by. But when I got off the train they started to follow me so I utilized an item I always travel with "a Whistle" I blew the whistle and started talking to police and they left. Great videos. Thanks for sharing. Dan
@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 7 жыл бұрын
hi Dan, that sucks big-time. The visa on arrival wouldn't have helped you in that case actually, because you have to apply online at least four days prior to your flight. As for trains, the 2nd class is fine, maybe you mean the 3rd class train? That's the one where people are totally crammed in, they don't seem to limit how many tickets they sell for that. But 2nd class you have your own seat and people who don't have a seat aren't allowed so it shouldn't be overcrowded. Glad it all worked out at least.

Now is fine, I was trekking in Nepal last year through the month of May. I think the monsoon can come in June, but of course it depends on where and when it arrives. I think Manali doesn't get much monsoon so it's a good place to go, and Ladakh definitely doesn't so you can go there anytime in the next few months until around September/October.

Hey Gabriel thanks for this informative Video, but one question i got How much Money i need when im traveling in india for 6 Months cheap as possible ? Thanks.
@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 7 жыл бұрын
About $15 a day will do it, so call that $500 per month equals about $3,000 for six months. Keeping in mind you said as cheap as possible. But that's pretty doable.
@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 7 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but it depends a lot on where you go. Out of the tourist zones then yes, you could find a mid-range hotel for $15 or so. But there's a big jump when it comes to the nicer hotels. $1,000 a month is only about $30 a day and the mid-range hotels in touristy areas will go up a lot to maybe $30 or more, so then you don't have anything left for other expenses. But if you can afford $1,000 per month then you can travel nicely but will still have to think in budget terms to an extent.

I would love if you could give me some input on my upcoming trip. We are going all over India, mainly in cities (Goa, udaipur, dehli) but also going to many forts and ‘safaris’. I’ve heard that in places such as Mumbai it’s not smart to walk the streets after dark, is this true? And/or are there any other possible ‘dangers’ we should watch out for as a family? For the most part we will be staying in nice hotels like the taj hotels and flying/ hiring a driver, so travel shouldn’t be an issue. Also, are there any cultural or lawful differences that might surprise us? Thanks

I have been to India 21 times. As a woman I can tell you that the stories of danger in India are greatly exaggerated. Just stay away from very quiet, dark areas, and obscure, out of the way villages. It is the same advice I would give for traveling in the USA or UK; use common sense. India is alive in the evening! Make sure to explore at that time of day.

I am from India. No sir, their is no issue at all in dark too. Their are some areas as every country have, but don't take as hectic. Welcome to india, anytype of help needed from my side. I am happy to help you. As you listed the city, they are tourist friendly cities, you can book cabs for going one place to other. Preferred cab are "Ola" or "Uber" and for anytype of booking(bus, train etc) use" paytm"

Hello Gabriel, Great video! I'll be traveling to southern India alone during monsoon season in July. What type of rain gear would you recommend for monsoon rain? Also, I read that the e-visa lasts from 30 to 60 days? I checked the Indian government website but it is now down for maintenance. Lastly, any recommendations of places to visit, stay and eat (I'm vegan) in Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Bangalore, Mysore and Kerala? Thank you! Michael.
@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 7 жыл бұрын
As far as I know the e-visa is only valid for 30 days, but maybe they changed it recently. Not sure about that since I've never gotten it. As for rain gear just get a basic rain slicker of some sort, something that's pretty thin because it will be hot, so you don't want it to warm you up. Not sure about the vegan restaurants, I think there's an app for finding vegan places?

The big cities are madness, a few days is about all I can tolerate in any of them. India is all about select spots that are really amazing, and for me they're pretty much all smaller towns and villages.

See I live in Kolkata.....it all depends on where you are staying, in which hotel you are staying and which destination you are choosing....in any city if you are staying in some high range three star or five star hotels like HHI, ITC, Hayatt, Oberoi or Taj, you will be totally shielded from the din and bustle of the city.....there are plenty of luxury tours in the city available which you can opt for to avoid the crowd and craziness......so it depends on you how you want to travel in India and how much you want to spend....you will experience India accordingly......India can carter to all kinds of travelers....from super expensive to super cheap....option of choosing destination also varies greatly.... from beach to mountains, from jungles to deserts, from thriving cities to remote villages, from temples-mosques to historical heritage.....it's all on you what and how you want to explore and enjoy this country.....

suvodip chatterjee I am going solo but slow travel for first month in India ... so developed it would take lifetimes to see a small.part ... going golden triangle but allowing a few days in each place by bus and train that way not so hectic and to towns first ... then will join small group as will see more that way ... Agra Jodhpur Jaiselmar Mandawa Kochi to chill a few days trip then to cover Varanesi Foothills of Himalayas Mysore National park Pushkar Gangtok houseboat in Kerala etc ... then train to Northern parts from Kolkata where will stay 3 nights including Darjeeling as love train journeys ... that way some part guide and half tine is free .. mix of hostels and hotels ... go soon cant wait!!

Basically, I mostly book online a day or two beforehand, but in India I usually just arrive and look around (if it's a smaller town), because many of the budget hotels aren't online.

In India now you can use the Oyo room app for booking hotels( it is now highly popular in India), for cab service you can use Ola and Uber, for finding restaurant use Zomato app, for long distance bus booking use red Bus... there are plenty other helpful apps that you should have while traveling in India.....they will make your life easier in this country.....

You can book online for places to stay in India but not sure about the cheap beach huts. Probably the cheapest places don't have online booking. Just try a website and see what's available, for example I recommend this site: www.booking.com/s/01d2cbb6

Folks approach you all the time and persuade you to shops, hotels, restaurants etc. This is because anyone who brings in a customer gets a kick back. This is quite common in India. Its just the way business is done....especially since a lot of shops and hotels are hidden in the back alley, away from main traffic. People make a living doing this. They work the Train stations, bus stations etc, recruiting guests for any number of hotels. If you are travelling long distances by taxi, the taxi driver gets free meals, and a free night bed, if he takes you to a hotel. No questions asked.

ryan persaud this is indeed common..and sometimes you end up getting good deals as well..but my point is that if u already have a good deal..like u have booked a hotel in advance or so..just tell them u already have ur arrangements with you..and yes I agree on the point that some of the touts r actually working for their owners bcoz many hotels are deep in the alleys that one won't notice unless someone advertises them
