A very interesting walk from my guesthouse through the convoluted maze of the old town of Varanasi (Banaras) to the Ganges River (Ganga) of India.

I’ve been in India 3 times and never visited Varanasi 😅 the problem is that India is a huge country and I have 5 weeks holiday each year. 2/3 weeks with my family, 0/1 week solo here in Europe and 2 weeks in India or south east Asia. India is a perfect country for a long trip.

Fun Fact - Reason Varanasi's lanes are so small is because of invaders destroying many cities. So with small lanes they couldn't enter with their big army and some soldiers could be killed. Thereby saving the city.

Kuch bhi bhai? Reason is that the city is so old that over time population grew and so did the space for homes of people which narrowed the streets too much. Even now, only narrow streets are found only in the oldest areas of city.

@@ashutoshhh6614 Are you crazy. Varanasi's lanes are immensely thin. That doesn't happen just because of its oldness. But it's as you said it's the old part which has thin lanes because It was built like that centuries ago. Please read some history.

@@bapparawal2457 I live in Varanasi and am very well versed with its history. The roads were made thinner because there were less people, no vehicles for that width. This city was mess uptill recently. now with BJP right wing government which is focusing also on culture and heritage takes a task to improve it. In 20th century it was such a mess that leaders like gandhi came and become sad to see such a conjusted state of ancient holy spiritual city. This city was never like that in the state we see today all thanks to population boom in india plus no city planning with increasing population by post independence governments and also british government before independence in both era's none of government uptill now try to planned and adjust the city according to population. The problem is that this city needs complete new redevelopment plan as this city now becomes mess and chaos because this is city of Antiquity ancient world. And after Islamic invasions of india these city was damaged more than making it planned according to situation uptill recently.

One note: from what I understand a person does not have to “die in Varanasi” to obtain salvation. Instead my understanding is that the ashes can be distributed in to the Ganga via a series of rituals that results in Moksha. So I believe it’s more of where the remains are left and which ceremonies are conducted that decides this.
@YourFreeBeats
@YourFreeBeats 2 жыл бұрын
Also whoever told you that it matters what side of the river you die was pulling your leg or something…amazing you bought in to that. Just read about obtaining Moksha to get an understanding of it.

32:42. That is a painting of revered Adi Shankaracharya the great philosopher and saint from Kalady Kerala. He founded Advaitha philosophy. Kashi is a great center for learning . He has debated here in Kashi and won over many followers. He walked from kalady in Kerala to Kashi. Those are his four great disciples under whom he entrusted the math ( centre’s of learning for spiritual studies) one of the maths he established is Joshimath

At 30:00 that was South Indian street Gabe and those dishes - idli , dosa , utpam are the breakfast for typical South Indian . This is very surprising to find such South Indian street in Varanasi which is located usually in Northmost of India . Through your video i actually found the South Indian street there so whenever i visit there in Varanasi i will going to have that Tamil-Telugu breakfast there . Thanks Gabe 👍🏻
