I checked taxi prices in Prague and this is what I found online: "The basic fee is Kč40.00, the kilometer price is Kč28.00." Based on that the 4.4 kilometer ride to my hotel should have been around 163 koruna. Edit: A couple other things in response to some of the comments. No need to get a powerbank, my laptop does that and I often use it to charge the phone. I think it drained especially quickly because of the cold. And you can't replace the battery on that particular phone. I took it to a repair shop in the US once and they said the battery can't be replaced because it can't be removed. So getting a new phone is the way to go.

While in baltic countries you shoulfd absolutely use Bolt. Works in other countries too. Similar to uber, but cheaper.
@PavelD83
@PavelD83 Ай бұрын
It should be something like that even with Bolt, but I suspect the guy took advantage of the fact you just flagged him down without putting it though the app? If you get Bolt through the app, the price is displayed before the confirmation, same as Uber. The fact that the app displays the price is the reason Bolt driver does not have to have the meter...

I looked it up, not sure if u used KVTaxi. From the train station to your hotel, which is far from the city center by the way, you should have paid about 220 ,- CZK, as we say dumm tourist fee is 2x the price. They/you wont bother with calling the police or file charges, ruins the vacation. Basically, an iron rule is to ALWAYS use public transport, while in the Czech Republic, only tourists use a taxi or uber or bolt. It gets you ANYWHERE. One of the best and densest networks in the world. For more info watch this chanell: www.youtube.com/@HONESTGUIDE

You are paying 30€ for a steak with potatoes and water, not even wine or beer, and you are not complaining! That's a ripoff. But 17€ for a convenient taxi ride is a "scam" according to you. Gabriel, as a world traveler you are acting cheap.

@@PavelD83 I didn't get a ride with the Bolt car actually. That was a little confusing because I showed the car and then next clip I was in a taxi. But the Bolt car passed me without stopping, I waited there for quite a while longer without filming, didn't see another taxi, then walked back to the train station and got the taxi there.

The beers you drank from a can are absolutely nothing like the Pilsner Urquell and Budvar you can get in a proper Czech pub which are delivered straight from the breweries and transported/kept in specially designed tanks. While I am not familiar with the brand you had at the train station it was likely transported/stored in the same manner.

Taxi scams are destroying taxi services. Some time ago I was asking for a taxi price in Bulgaria for a 5km ride... 60 leva 😱 (30€). That moment I stopped wondering why nobody was around the taxi stands, why the busses were overfilled and why there were so many mini car trains going every few minutes (witch did shake you like washing mashine, but did cost 5 leva for same distance).

Flagging down a cab isn't really a thing in Prague and other cities. Some can be seen by taxi stands, however the absolute majority of passengers simply call or order a car online. And regarding trains, there's the so-called "One ticket", where you get one for the destination regardless of the operator or time of day

Also an insight to Karlovy Vary-the city and the region itself in general is the poorest in the whole country, so even though the historical city center is stunning, the other parts of that city and region are definitely not doing that great(that reflects even the attitude of those taxi drivers trying to scam anyone-and believe me, he would even want to scam Czechs). The richer parts of the country are definetely the center, southern parts and then area around Brno in Moravia. Silesia is a coal miners area which isnt really doing that great either since basically of the coal mines are shut down.

There are free maps for bus and tram routes, both in paper and even online. You can find the number of the tram that takes you to the train station for example. It was funny though when you took the wrong tram twice. "Oh no, it's taking a turn to the right like yesterday". Great content! 👍😀

It’s great to see you Gabriel! When visiting Slovakia I would most definitely recommend visiting the Tatra mountains. You can take a tram ( Zubačka ) from Štrba to Štrbské Pleso. It’s like a small Swiss paradise but much cheaper. From there you can go to Tatranská Lomnica where you can take a cable car to the Lomnický Štít, an observatory at the peak of the High Tatra Mountains. Good Luck!

I was there last year and it was surely a paradise in High Tatras, nice memories, especially from Lomnicky štit. I also had a swimming pool in Hotel Sorea Uran (Tatranska Lomnica). But there are also some other interesting things in Slovakia like Orava Castle (staging of Nosferatu 1922 movie, near Liptovsky Mikulaš), village Čičmany with mysteriously painted houses, Bojnice Castle, nice cities of Trenčin and Košice, also Spiš Castle between Poprad and Košice is very big and authentic medieval ... Surely a hidden gem of Europe, country of Slovakia.

@@Ojstra I agree! Make sure you pre-book tickets for the 3rd and final gondola up to the peak! You can book them online before you go and I would suggest it as we saw many people trying to get tickets that day and was sold out. The final gondola is quite small so sells out fast, also the facilities at the top can only hold so many at a time but it's awesome up there, there is a little cafe where you can get food and drink and places to walk around and out off past the edge for photos.

Really nice town of Karlovy Vary, good to see you are there. Not only in today's Czech Republic, it was also one of the most important spa centres in Austria Hungary and after WW2 with the most prominent film festival east of Iron Curtain (just like it was Sopot, Poland for music). The Czech herb liquor becherovka originates from there, too. However, 3 hours train ride (instead of normal 1) and taxi scam - I hope that it never repeats on this trip. In this case it sounds like $8 difference between "book" price ride and actual ride. That is like one big mac. I am actually more amazed that there is a "stated' ride price and that anyone actually sticks to it. I think I am more triggered by how pricey food is now days when one travels and even when one is not traveling.

From my past trips to Czechia, I was told that most of the locals use Bolt, not taxis, because there's a lot of dishonest taxis with hacked meters. I never met any locals who use Uber there. He might even charge more than 500 kcs at the end of the trip at 15:52 440 kcs at 21:10 still too much. Hi Gabriel, you are so right on about experienced /seasoned traveler still make mistakes. But that's how we learn a lot from going to new places. Regarding the taxi situation, I can say that 'taxi' scams are nothing new. I once got on a taxi ride from Bangkok to the Suvarnabhumi Airport, the taxi driver turned on the meter upon me stepping into the cab. But when I arrived at the airport, I noticed he has turned off the meter sometime during the ride! So I had no idea what the heck was the real price. He ended up charged me 550 THB (approx $15 usd). I later found that price was not too much over the Bolt price. But still, it was a scam on the Cab's part. I learned from that point on I only use App like Bolt in Thailand or Uber in other countries. The apps are great since I know exactly how much I expect to pay.. Safe travel and Peace!

As you are experienced with the taxi scams in some countries it is good for viewers who may be traveling to know. I will be on my 5th trip to Poland this summer and have been schooled by my cousins about what taxi’s not to take and which ones are trustworthy. Since my first trip 2017 the Polish government has cracked down hard on taxi scammers. I have had good experiences with Uber but prices have really gone up. I still find them the most reliable. The taxi issue seems problematic everywhere in Europe. While in Germany last year a taxi from my 5 star hotel would not take 2 of us the short distance to our next historic 5 star hotel because the fare was too short and not to his liking. We complained to the hotel and they got us a quick and friendly taxi apologies all around. So it seems trying to navigate taxi issues in Europe is common place.

@@stevemcgowen You must be pretty new to the channel if you haven't noticed my taste in beer. ✌🍺The problem with Budvar, in my opinion, is that it tasted exactly like all the popular American beers like Budweiser, Coors, Michelob, Miller, etc. And by "tasted like" I mean it didn't really taste like anything. No offense to the great nation of Czechia intended. Try the Rufus, that was a great beer. Tons of amazing beers in Europe, I'm always trying new ones. I love ambers, red ales, stouts, trappist ales, wheat beers. Not a fan of IPAs or super average beers, which is usually the case with the most popular beer in almost every country.

@@GabrielTravelerVideos I had Rufus at the brewery in Ostrava. It's ok for a red lager. As far as pilsner style of beers, Pilsner Urquell is the standard by which all other pilsner beers are measured.

@@stevemcgowen I might go to Pilsen, so maybe I'll get the chance to try it in the brewery. In general pilseners and lagers aren't my preference. They'll do but I prefer more unique flavors.

The thing about Czech beer is that it sucks in cans and bottles. It’s really a beer that is meant for draft and should be as fresh as possible. The Pilsner urquell at the brewery in Plzen is completely different than the stuff in the cans, especially the unfiltered cold beer they let you taste from the barrrels on the tour. You should go there since you’re so close.

When taking a taxi I expect to be scammed unless I know exactly what Im doing, like prepurchasing an airport transfer at an official booth inside the terminal. Other than that, its just very likely it will happen anywhere in the world. Tourists are tired, dont know the local langauge and prices, have a lot of luggage and usually dont feel comfortable enough abroad to make a fuzz, so ideal targets to overcharge. I'd say in Europe in general, never ever take a taxi, unless you are elderly, injured or otherwise incapacitated. A healthy man traveling solo does not need a taxi and the hassle thats almost always attached doesnt even make it convenient. Public transport goes absolutely everywhere in Europe, sometimes it needs some prep, sometimes a bit of a wait, but its always worth it. Oh and totally understand the problems of an old phone. Mine is about 4 years old and its starting to die slowly. However, a $30 power bank might be a solution for those pesky situations where you are suddenly lost. Just did a Google route from the Karlovy Vary trainstation to the Sanssouci resort and it shows that busline 13 takes you most of the way in just 11 minutes. Yeah pretty hard to figure that out in the fly with no internet, I get it, but still.

Hi Gabriel, it doesn't any stranger that you can't make this stuff up on some of these trips. I don't know if you have ever tried a beer called Yuengling beer it's the oldest beer in America and it tastes much better than Budweiser, but it gets no mention you see it in Pennsylvania but rare anywhere else. If you're a connoisseur, you may not be a huge fan of it most these days people are drinking IPA off the beaten path not so commercial.
