I thought the watermelon story was funny and I guess as a black person I can understand how we would take something like that has stereotypical and racist. But I'm glad that they realized that it wasn't and didn't make a big deal out of it. Because sometimes other cultures across the world aren't totally familiar with what may be offensive to other cultures or people in America. And it's the same for us. If I went to China or even England I would have in the back of mind that this is a different culture and I need to be careful not to offend.
@latifafifilatifafifi11 жыл бұрын
I don't get the watermelon part ,how is that racist ?
@NovaStorm1311 жыл бұрын
Latifa fifi ahhh, its just a stereotype that everybody thinks that black people love watermelon, hot sauce, chicken. same as how people think us Canadians live in igloos and ride polar bears to school and funny things like that, or how Americans speak American and not english, or how all of the Asian culture can only see half of what everybody else sees cause their eyes. Just stupid things like that. So from that story she told they could have been a little offended.
@latifafifilatifafifi11 жыл бұрын
ughh this is just supid ,but thanks for the explanation i appreciate it.
@anaana201211 жыл бұрын
Just to be clear, in England we dont associate black people with watermelon. This is a cold country so people hardly have watermelon here lol.
@th3queenB0911 жыл бұрын
Well what I meant was when you go to another country people there may not necessarily know that something is offensive because of their differing cultures. I wasn't saying this "watermelon" stereotype happens in England I wouldnt know if it did or didn't. Honestly england was just another place I used in place of a different culture . I could have used India or Australia or Sweden lol didn't mean to imply anything by using England

They went to a KTV bar, they are very popular in China. Well Basketball is the biggest sport in China so the Chinese love the NBA players, which obviously has more black athletes. The Chinese guys who are into basketball know all the players. But you have to live in China to know how racist they are towards black people. If you have your Chinese friends, that is cool but when you live in the country, racism hits you hard
@HabituallyObsessed8 жыл бұрын
+MrQlypse1 You can hardly blame the Chinese since they are homogenous society and everything they know about other races, they learnt from American movies. It all goes back to the good o'l US of A.
@MrQlypse18 жыл бұрын
+HabituallyObsessed well, it's ignorance at a very high level. Some Chinese people even get confused when a black American tells them he's American. They would ask, how can you be black and be American? That's when you know, something ain't right
@MsDesiree398 жыл бұрын

From experience I can only say that soul food is THE big thing, at least for the African Americans whom I met living in the so-called South.
@ryee8610 жыл бұрын
William Jones I know you were answering someone else, but thanks for the explanation. I grew up in the States (in the south of all places), and have *never* heard that explanation. But I guess a combination of living in a multi-ethnic hole, good parenting, and living overseas for the past 8 years has either meant that I never knew that stereotype, or forgot it. I mean I guessed it, but didn't know that was a thing.

Yes, fruit (many times watermelon) is served at karaoke bars for refreshments. they also serve it in regular bars/pubs and clubs as well in different parts in China (or even Asia). If you are not educated or well-informed about other countries and cultures it most definitely can be misunderstood as a racial thing. However, now you know it's not intended that way.
