Another point in favor of a gun not always being ideal as a home defense weapon: A friend of mine had the police break into his home on a No Knock Warrant because they got the address wrong. He was nearly shot as he came down the stairs slowly holding a bat (one cop panicked, shot two rounds, missing while he was still twenty feet away, and not moving closer) before the police even identified themselves. At that point he dropped the bat thankfully no one was harmed. They never apologized for their mistake, breaking in his door, or opening fire on him. Imagine if he had been holding a firearm instead? I doubt only one of the officers would have opened fire and I doubt they would have stopped until they hit because obviously they would have considered him a much more immediate threat. I'm not saying guns are bad for home defense but people act like they are one size fits all and they are not. Nothing is.

If police need to arrest someone they should apprehend them somewhere where they are not holed up like people are in their home. That would solve the problem of them busting into homes and starting gunfights like that. People who are not police will sometimes bust into homes and yell "police" also. It's not a reasonable expectation for someone at home to believe it and submit just because the person breaking in is yelling it. I've known of people even dressing like cops and doing that. Police should instead follow the suspect and detain them first unless it's some sort of emergency already that they actually have to break in like that.

I have to say, I prefer the swords over the axe (and maybe the hammer, although the "you can have it laying around" argument is pretty good) because you can only deal damage with the head of the axe. So, if we assume that you don't put that much time into training the weapon, swords are a lot more reliable, also, if you talk about them reflexively putting up their hands, I worry that they could inadvertently block the axe at the axe handle with their arms. Plus, them grappling your sword is harder because of the edge.

In Europe, we've just got solid doors in our apartments, so unlike with your typical US cardboard houses, a wannabe crackhead intruder would rather break his foot than the door. I've seen many a home invasion security cam footage from the US, and almost every single time I wonder how people can be so concerned about home invasions to sleep with their guns next to their bed/under the pillow but apparently not concerned enough to spend $100 to reinforce their f*ing main entry door to withstand some kicks from a street thug.

Now I think is better to punish the perpetrator. Because if not, you end up building a prison for yourself, that's what happened in Argentina: every window has bars, every door is reinforced, walls are brick and mortar, outer walls have electrified barbed wires on top. But having guns is frown upon, and the justice system is hard on the victims and soft on criminals. I don't want to be a prisoner in my own home. I no longer live in Argentina. Never again.

@@LictordeThrax I'm not saying you shouldn't punish a perpetrator. If someone breaks into my home I will do my best that he regrets it. But for my OWN safety, I don't want an invasion to happen in the first place. Having your gun is only the last line of defense and if the perpetrator also has a gun, you end up in a shootout that can turn out both ways (or even with both of you killed which doesn't help you much), so I wonder why so many Americans only think about their last line of defense and not about the steps before to prevent the invasion in the first place or at least to give you more time to get into better position for your last line of defense.

@@angelsjoker8190 My point was, it is better to be armed and have the legal support from the justice system - that is, if you kill an invader you won't go to jail - than a mere "passive" defense. You raise the stakes for the would-be invader, so you make him think twice before even attempting the break in. So you have less invaders (more risk, less tempting the crime), and A chance of defense against the boldest criminals.

I'm glad he is still recommending the Roman gladius style sword. Maybe too lethal but I think you are allowed to be lethal in most countries if a burglar home invades. Just focus on shanking its instinctive there is more techniques with swords you can feint and come roundwise with the edges on the sides, change angles, all that but all you need really for a burglar is the thrust. Likely he will have an inferior weapon: knife, crowbar, baseball bat that you can block with your forearm (yes u get a broken arm but you save your life) or the buckler then thrust.

@@ElDrHouse2010 Self defense is always allowed, burglary included, but preemptive attacks are not covered by self defense laws (might be by stand your ground or castle doctrine ones, not very familiar with those). I can't remember a single case of people killed by burglars, but do know of a case where a guy killed the burglar with his hunting gun - ended with him being charged for murder. Actually it is extremely rare to get armed burglaries of occupied houses in my corner of the world. You can't find a newish home without anti-burglary doors, all walls are solid etc, if someone is breaking in that someone is probably well prepared and has planed it properly, including getting in when empty. The vast majority of them happen in vacation season when homes tend to stay empty for days. I used to work in insurance for years, we specialised in home insurance, and I don't know of a single armed burglary that we had to deal with, let alone an active shooting. Take the guns out and it all goes down. Thieves are just taking unnecessary risks of longer jail by carrying guns knowing that no one will wait for them with one either.
@jamesw713
@jamesw713 Жыл бұрын
@@goranmekota7540, you are correct. Some US states have laws that say the homeowner has the duty to retreat before using deadly force. Crossing state lines changes the rules for the use of deadly force. Other states with castle doctrine allow immediate use of force to protect your home, because Lazule's idea of protecting your life when someone has taken the steps to break in. Sounds like Icy Mike lives in one of the states that allow immediate force against intruders. I am interested in the "anti-burglary doors" you mentioned in your other comment. How are they made stronger?
@goranmekota7540
@goranmekota7540 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesw713 Depends on the level (there are formalised criteria for anti-theft levels related to the amount of force/time they are certified to withstand). But in general they have steel frames under the wood, reinforced door frames (that go into concrete or brick walls of course), increased numbers of heavy bolts going into those frames all around the door and complex locks (often two of them). Basically a big safe/vault door covered in wood for aesthetic reason. Every door can be broken in, but it requires time and specialised tools that casual thieves usually don't have. Another factor is that much more people live in apartments vs houses in Europe than in the States, which also adds to safety (an additional door to break in in order to enter the building, inaccessible windows besides the ground floor (that is often for garages and store/office space anyway) and too many neighbours to dare use powertools for half an hour in order to break in).

My number one vote obviously in the southeastern US, is a shotgun with an 18” barrel and bird shot. At 15-20 feet, it’s still pretty tight, but isn’t going to go through walls and endanger the people I’m trying to protect. If I’m somewhere that a shotgun isn’t an option, I’d probably consider the hammer, but my first option is a foam fire extinguisher. In the short term, the foam is just as good as mace, and then I have a big red metal can attached to a heavy duty hose. Makes for a nice bludgeoning tool or flail.

I am, just about the biggest gun nerd who ever went to the range, but I still think that people underestimate the cons of a gun. Another commentor mentioned cops showing up at the wrong house for a no-knock raid; wielding a gun in that scenario would likely resulted in unnecessary death. Additionally, guns are politically charge; if your self defense shooting case goes in front of a DA with a political agenda who wants to make a statement, you could find yourself in serious trouble. IMO, there are only really two major pros to a gun that are unequalled by other weapons: 1. intimidation. No weapon has the ability to make someone rethink what they are doing quite as fast and as frequently as a gun. I've drawn a gun for self defense before, did not have to fire it. Simply presenting the person with the knowledge that I had a gun, without even pointing it at them, got the job done. 2. Force multiplication. If you are a tiny, not very fit person, a hammer isn't going to do you a whole lot of good if you can't physically swing it, but a gun still will. A gun does not care who pulls the trigger, it still delivers lethal force, so long as you can hit what you shoot at. like anything, you need to weigh the pros and cons.

TBH, I'm with you. Yeah, it could do serious damage. But that's *could*. The typical carpenter's hammer is awkward for general self defense. Predictable, committal, limited range, simple to block (painful, true). Sure, it's better than nothing, but any well-designed weapon is easier to fight with. Now, a hefty flathead screwdriver is nearly identical to a proven weapon. Or something smaller like a slag hammer is a huge advantage without being awkward. Granted, you need to have experience fighting plus practice with the weapon type to be good with anything.

As usual, I generally agree with Mike. I would offer a few counterpoints though. 1) In home defense for the average person, the best weapon (by far) is a short-barrel shotgun. (Including better than a handgun.) Its maneuverable in close quarters, does not require exacting marksmanship, handles simply under stress, and can be readily stored safely at your bed side. Also, as I understand it, shotguns are not prohibited or restricted in Canada. So I would recommend that as the baseline option. 2) If you are seriously in fear for your life from a home invader, what you want to do is get a shotgun and "strongpoint" (create a defensible position) in a room (usually your bedroom or your child's) with your family while you call police. You're probably not going to be moving through your home seeking contact, unless you're not really sure someone is actually there and you're going to confirm or unless you're moving to a loved one elsewhere in the house. This is true armed or unarmed. 3) If you don't want a gun, my recommendation would be to get a quality fixed blade fighting knife. Any variation on a single edged military knife is fine (K-Bar, etc. -- I recommend Grayman Knives or Spartan Blades). You might want a wrist strap for it to improve retention. The hatchet and machete are viable options, but (in my opinion) they're too clumsy too wield (especially in tight spaces), too likely to get tangled up in the enemy's arms, and too easy to get taken away. Alternatively, I think karambits are good because of the benefits of the ring for handling and retention in the dark. Karambits are very easy to use for anyone with a boxing background and -- with a little training -- they do VERY well in the clinch. 4) Definitely work on weapon retention at the gym. You will be surprised how much it changes fighting when your first priority becomes maintaining positive control of a deadly weapon rather than working grappling techniques. In my experience, BJJ loses a lot of utility when weapon retention comes into it, while dirty boxing styles (including Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Kali, etc.) adapt well.

Don't know about Canadian laws in particular, but most non-automatic firearms are not banned in most of the world. They are just restricted in who and where can use them. So for example if you are a hunter you can have a shotgun or a rifle at home in most European countries (and a handgun too in many, but shortened shotguns might be actually banned as they don't have sporting or hunting applications), but if you kill the guy breaking into your home you might still go straight to prison for manslaughter unless you were fired on first or your life was otherwise obviously, provably and objectively threatened. There is also more often than not the legal obligation of keeping firearms under lock, often unloaded, wich fucks up reaction time. It is a misconception that pro-gun folk in the US sometimes seem to have about (most of) the rest of the world - guns are almost never banned outright. There are hunters and sport shooters everywhere. The difference is: 1) it is more difficult to get permits 2) there is more ongoing controll 3) there are more rules on storage and transportation of said arms 4) it is extremely difficult to get weapons on self defense ground 5) it is extremely difficult to get carry permits 6) there are no "stand your ground" or "castle doctrine" laws, anything deemed as surpassing the minimal necessary force (up to equal to the opposing one) to avert immediate danger would be considered as going above legal self-defence. Considering that most burglaries are motivated by material interests and not done by psychos wishing to torture and kill, using a firearm has a very high chance to have a worse outcome for the homeowner than not having one. It is better to get a TV set stolen than to spend years in prison. Armed robberies are very uncommon anyway and the vast majority of burglaries happen to empty houses, thieves like to make it easy for themselves after all, so your guns are probably just another valuable item that can be stolen more than anything. Specially considering that this days almost everyone has reinforced doors and windows, and walls are solid in most of Europe, it takes a pro to break in and they usually take their time and have a lot of inside info in advance.

I think the best non-firearm home defense weapon is a spear. You don't need to get into close range to maim and kill. A home invader that isn't armed with a firearm themselves likely has no answer to the spear besides run at you and pray you're a moron. They get even more effective in narrow spaces like hallways or doorways where your ability to swing is limited, with a spear it's like hitting fish in a barrel. An untrained person with a spear is scary. A trained person with a spear is a nightmare. You can still use them with one hand, they're cheap, and you probably already have one in your home, just in separate stick and knife pieces.

What about fire crackers? The louder and brighter the better, the one thing we are all born with is a fear of is loud noises there's also a chance people will think you're shooting at them and scarper, you have the advantage that no one gets killed and you won't be washing blood off your walls and out of your carpet for the next six months. Although as I understand fireworks are un ironically illegal in a lot of states in America.

3:00 you can kill people who invade your home in Canada. No really look up some cases. In the home is considered much more in the defenders favour. If you shot a gun in your living room and he was armed, especiallywith a gun or knife. You're probably in the clear. Its about proportion and disparity in physicality. If I break in gabe's house unarmed and he beats me to death barehanded he might be in as much trouble as if shot or stabbed me, he's going to have some explaining to do. But if I break into his house and take one punch and nope out and run away down the street, he cases me down the street with the knife I brought when I broke in, and stabs me to death. Yeah he going to jail. He successfully defended when I ran away, so pursuing me is considered unreasonable. It can get a little fuzzy and there are lot of variables but it's not like you're just expected to let the invader take your stuff and make himself at home. As soon as and long as they're in your house any reasonable force required to defend yourself and your property is fine. "Reasonable" is a subjective term, so it depends a lot. But you're not going to jail if 3 guys break in and you use a weapon to defend yourself, even if they do die as a result. Pretty sure... Obligatory I'm not a lawyer.

Ok. Icy Mike does not fully understand melee weapons. Theng Thrand did an experiment based off of Athony Cumming’s Natori Ryu books where he defended his doorway with a spear and even multiple attackers had difficulty entering. Entry is defeat and unless you have enough gun to overwhelm them, you want first to prevent entry. Natori Ryu has an interesting lesson about stabbing thrice to fully dispatch an opponent. War can be very practical. Dimicator is an expert in hema fighting with sharp bladed weapons. Viking tomahawks are not really top heavy. See how he uses hawk and shield and sharp sword and buckler. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2bVZ5x-hZ6fq9ksi=BXuyJ2VzSjHPrvQg

I keep a 5 foot'(1.5meter) dowel staff by front door, and a straw broom/thick wooden handle- outside bedroom door. Haven't ever bought or owned firearm...If I had a family I would consider keeping a firearm. But that hasn't ever happened. I don't know where those bullets might go but I do know where my hands and feet go. Same for staff. Also how many of us have made mistakes in our youth we wish we could take back. What if it's some young 🌱 person roped into doing something by others, caught up into bad situation you make worse. Post 📯 Script Has nothing to do with being afraid of firearms or if I know how to use them. I was Primary Marksmanship Instructor within United States Marine Corps for M-16 and 9mm. I am well versed in what firearms can do and how to make them do what I need done.

Shooting a gun is not that hard. I took my brother right after he graduated, gave him a few instructions on how to hold a gun and aim. He did extremely well at 10yds, 2.5 inch grouping. Yes using a gun under stress is much harder, but so is literally everything. In most self defense situations, people pull out their gun and point it at the perpetrator. That's it. It's enough to make that person go away. You never hear about it because it's not a dramatic story the news media loves so much trying to be the next top news anchor that's just ego hype. It also doesn't necessarily count as a self defense situation so it doesn't get added to statistics. Some people don't even call the police, that it's unnecessary. You should call the police if you had to pull a gun on someone even if you didn't use it. That way the police can find that person and stop them from doing whatever they tried on you to someone else.

Gotta be careful Gabe. Telling people you're not armed or willing to be is a terrible idea. You should get some training with firearms, there is a lot of crazy people out there. Advertising that your home/person is unarmed is not very smart. Gun free zones are overwhelmingly where most mass shootings occur. I would do a follow up video getting some training, it's empowering. Cover your backside.

Best weapon is a gun. Those blades are toys, real quality blades cost $500-$1000 just as much as a handgun. Some shotguns are even cheaper. On top of that any blade over 3 inches is illegal even in the U.S. so you're going to prison for using those. You could use a hammer, but only if you're not intentionally carrying it for self defense. You might ask how would they know. Well if are carrying a hammer for other reasons what are those reasons? Carpentry? So unless you're carrying nails and some 2x4s at the same time then yeah I guess you're good.

I agree a gun is best but I don't think it's illegal in the USA to own a blade over 3 inches. Kitchen knives are usually bigger than that. In the USA you have the right to bear arms. Anyone telling you otherwise is the one breaking the law.
