So you said you would let us know all the problems you went through before karate combat. I haven't seen any updates on the difficulties you experienced in preparation. It sounded like you separated from your wife.

Adding agility ladder and 9 box grid will elevate the footwork training too. Both ladder & grid will maintain both feet distance apart, with constant drilling like 3 steps right and 3 steps left follow by forward & backward on 9 grid box. With these 2 tools will bump up the reaction speed and upper body weight distribution creating stability while hasten forward & backward rapid movement.

I started light sparring a couple weeks ago and coach made sure basic footwork was muscle memory before putting me against someone. But where drills end and sparring begins, even 'simple stuff' like this can get lost in the moment. "Footwork" was my main 'homework' from my last session - funny enough you posted exactly the reminders I needed before training tonight, haha

Being authentic and generous with sharing world-class materials is plenty enough, Gabriel! Video editing is just a bonus. Love the crispness of your steps! The point about not just relying on calf strength is gold; making full use of tendons and fascia makes a world of difference.

Can you do a video for overhand footwork? Do you suggest a diagonal step with the lead foot before throwing an overhand?

Could you address when you pivot or make an angle towards your left, or towards an orthodox opponents open side, things you should do/not do when moving that way? Against an orthodox fighter it seems you might be open to shots, especially right kicks.

I do footwork drills but I just can't get into shadow boxing. I do everything on the heavy bag. Is this a big mistake? Thanks for all of the great videos Gabriel! You have helped me out quite a lot.
@wynsonrao5177 Жыл бұрын
definitely a mistake. The heavy bag is a static target and your habits will adapt as such, meaning you'll overcommit on strikes, lack balance, and fail to use distance control via footwork. Shadowboxing teaches you to throw strikes with stability and flow, as well as visualize an opponent moving in front of you so you can emphasize movement

I'm having difficulties with what you always say about entering with the head off the center line: how do you do that with the kind of forward bouncing that you show in this video?

Well the outfit is kind of baggy - but Gabriel is working really hard with Locky from Forge Fitness in Victoria doing strength training and has gotten bigger in the shoulder and arms for sure. Not very much - 3 to 4 lbs or so, but he is so lean he looks pretty muscular now in the upper body. Every fight except this last Karate Combat bout sees Gabriel weighing in at 143lbs or 145 lbs depending on the organization he was fighting for, but the next day in the ring Gabriel gained a few pounds while his opponents shot way back up. Look at Gabriel fighting Adamchuck and you will see Gabriel looks tiny and thin compared to him with a 10 lb or more difference. When Gabriel fought Robin Van Roosemalen - Robin made 145 lbs / 65-66kg weigh in but the next day in the ring Robin had 25 lbs or about 11 kg on Gabriel. At that level, these guys are all so good and then you find in the fight you are competing with a guy 2 or possibly weight classes above you. Gabriel wants to be bigger and stronger as if everything else is the same skill wise etc - the guy with 25 lbs will win as they hit so much harder and they take bigger shots than a smaller guy. Anyone who has not discovered and /or just does not recognize that, has simply not really fought someone who is equal in every way to them other than being much bigger. A fighter who is so much better than another fighter who may be bigger is winning due to a big skill difference, but if they fought a top 3 world class fighter who had 10 - 20 lbs on them they would find out really quickly size matters.
