There's a short scene that shows Walter getting handed the tape on one of the runs. He doesn't go looking for the tape, it finds him. I think it's the cameraman looping back.

So the tape traps people in a loop where they keep getting rewound back in time to relive it being played. I guess Walter killed himself to escape, but that got caught on the tape and lured in the reporter. So the VHS aesthetic is even more literal than usual with this game if we consider people are getting trapped inside the tape itself.

oh god i didnt even realize about the changes when i played this, earlier you picked "julianna" with 2 Ns, so when you replay the game, her name changed from "juliana" to "julianna" + and her portrait image changes when she becomes more "passive aggressive", kinda gives me mandela catalogue vibes, like it's a mimic, copying her. especially since the decoration on top of the door frame made her feel uneasy

Brazilian info from a local, language-wise! The name 'Celso' is pronounced "CEL (as in Cellphone) - so". "Walter" is usually said with the W having the sound of a V, and the currency mentioned in the game, "Cruzeiros", was a currency in Brazil a few decades ago, before our current one (Reais).

There is another Brazilian game inspired by Resident Evil and Silent Hill and which has many puzzles, the name of the game is "Fobia - St. Dinfna Hotel", the team that produced this game is producing a new game "AILA" which is horror involving artificial intelligence. a horseshoe above the enterance to a home is good luck! if it's ends are up, it catches good luck. if it's facing down, it lets the good luck pass through and it wards off evil. since the woman has it facing down, she probably was worried about evil. i wonder why it made Juliana uncomfortable...?

Maybe because she's the one who initiated the tape and got them caught in the loop. She becomes increasingly aggressive and callous in the subsequent loops. It's like the tape doesn't just trap, it infects, or like Walter said, it "haunts," like an evil spirit, and Juliana/Julianna is the one being haunted. There's some strong The Ring vibes to this.

@@leftygoosey So someone else theorized that Walter's suicide attempt was a last ditch effort to break his cycle. I thought at first that theory had merit. However, based on the fact that each of the characters believes that Walter died a different way AND there are two more options that don't match the women's assertions, it seems like even Walter's death/dying is a part of the loop where he's been doomed to repeat it over and over again. And we know that Walter took the tape to the studio to broadcast for all of Channel 8's viewers to see. It seems like the tape may have been destroyed before it could air, and then Walter killed himself, which would align more with the thought that if you don't comply with making the copy/distributing, something bad happens to you. Since even people and animals adjacent to the video viewership are also being put through the loop, whatever efforts Walter was making to warn/stop this from continuing to happen failed. However, it is interesting that the camera man, who views the film through a secondary lense, and the wife and dog, all seem to have less modification to their personalities than Juliana/Julianna, who seems entirely shut down/zombie like by the third run.

I love the little details of this game, like after the first rewind the game gets blurrier and has a little doubling going on. Stuff like that was common when you copied a VHS tape, there was a lot of fidelity loss. So seeing them trapped in what looked to me like a copy made of their first day etc gets so wonderfully creepy for me. Same with the RGB colours being off. I swear, the amount of love put into VHS filters is amazing. Especially since we spent so much time fighting with all of the various TV options to try and remove as much of the noise as possible when we were actually watching them 😂

It's funny, given that I'm old enough to have grown up with VHS tapes and lo-fi telly, that the limits of the technology at the time have become such a compelling aesthetic for me now. What it is about the inferior visual fidelity and the tape aberrations that would have been perfectly ordinary to me as a child, now often make my skin crawl? Glad you played this one Gab, I might've missed it otherwise!

Sometimes, when things are left to the imagination, it can increase the fear and the scope, but when things are too vague, it can feel like there isn't really anything there behind it all. This kind of walks back and forth between those for me.

I loved the whole vibe they're going for in this game. Also, there 2 things that maybe are not material for another video, but they are interesting. You can put 2 codes in the elevator, 1 is for the special scene where you deliver the tape to Walter, which I think is awesome. And the other one was added with the update, where (spoilers I think?) in another run of the game, some items on the house are marked, and that way you can decipher the code, this way you end up in the forest, with an awesome interaction and possibly (this is my theory) a connection with their next game! :D

This reminds me so much about Pennsylvania state treasurer Robert Budd Dwyer, that shot himself after being found guilty of bribes. He declared his innosence literally up to his dying breath, but as he didn´t take the plea deal that could give him 5 years in prison - he now faced the possibility of 30 years instead.
