In a 2009 interview with Larry King, the Libyan leader insists he's the leader of a revolution, not a country.
=======
Moammar Gadhafi, who lived and died in violence
Ronald Bruce St John and Special to CNN
CNN - The man who dominated Libya for more than four decades died not far from his birthplace.
Moammar Gadhafi was born in the central Libyan desert south of Sirte in spring 1942. The only surviving son of traditional Bedouin parents, his early schooling centered on religious subjects taught by a local tribal teacher. Tribal social values, together with the religious principles learned at this time, strongly influenced him for the rest of his life.
Around age 10, he enrolled in elementary school in Sirte, where he completed six grades in four years. He then enrolled in secondary school in Sebha, where, for the first time, he had access to Arab newspapers and radio broadcasts, notably the “Voice of the Arabs” news program from Cairo. Shortly after he seized power in 1969, a junior American diplomat serving as an interpreter for the U.S. ambassador in Tripoli noted that Gadhafi spoke excellent Arabic, like a Voice of the Arabs radio announcer.
A political activist from the start, Gadhafi was expelled from school in Sebha because he was distributing pamphlets and organizing public protests critical of the ruling monarchy. He completed his secondary schooling in Misurata, and graduated from the Royal Military Academy in 1965.
Convinced that only armed might could force a change in government, he viewed military service not as a career, but as an instrument for socioeconomic and political change. In the course of his time at the academy, he created the Free Unionist Officers Movement and selected its 12-member central committee, drawing on contacts made in Sebha and Misurata.
The Free Unionist Officers Movement overthrew the monarchy in a bloodless coup d’état on the night of September 1, 1969. Thereafter, the ruling Revolutionary Command Council depicted itself as a collegial body, but Gadhafi was always first among equals, directing events and dictating policy. The language of Gadhafi and the other council members was the language of Arab nationalism, guided by the precepts of the Koran and sharia, the traditional code of Islamic law, and strengthened by the conviction that only the Revolutionary Command Council spoke for the Libyan people.
Over time, the Gadhafi regime created a unique form of direct democracy consisting of a nationwide system of congresses and committees designed to give the impression the Libyan people were running the government.
In fact, Gadhafi, the remaining Revolutionary Command Council members, the Free Unionist Officers and revolutionary committees appointed by Gadhafi tightly controlled the political system from the start, making all important decisions. The functions and activities of the direct democracy system were regulated by law; however, the activities of the parallel sector directed by Gadhafi and his cohorts was not in any way regulated by legal statutes.
Gadhafi was a revolutionary, and initially, his regime pursued a complex, aggressive and often violent foreign policy. Beginning in the early 1980s, a series of setbacks caused him to rethink failed initiatives, and after 1999, Libya sought to return to the international community.
The Libyan agreement to pay $2.7 billion to the families of the victims of the Lockerbie bombing and its renunciation of weapons of mass destruction marked important steps in the reconciliation process. By 2006, the United States had achieved full commercial and diplomatic relations with Libya for the first time in 25 years.
By any measure, Gadhafi’s legacy is a negative one. Politically, he systematically destroyed civil society and banned political parties, leaving the Libyan people with no experience in democratic government. Socially, his authoritarian regime violated the most basic human rights, including freedom of speech, assembly and the press. Economically, he failed to diversify the economy, leaving the country almost totally dependent on income from oil and gas revenues.

Watch the Australian interview. The interviewer asked Gaddafi what would he like put on his tombstone, but the translator didn't want to translate that to Gaddafi, through fear and/or respect. It was the last question of the interview. Interesting, coz Gaddafi was saying to the translator "I heard different words"

Sadly, many people on the "left" still believe he is a terrible dictator. And especially with respect to the current propaganda against Russia, they dig even deeper into the US propaganda. I tried to roll up the US propaganda starting from Gadaffi. Showing he's actually an Anarchist. One of us. Probably one of the best the world ever saw. What I reap, is just ridicule. The saddest thing of all is the horrible way he died. Killed by the very same people that he rose to protect and to inspire. The very same people he fought his whole life for. What did they do to him...? I hope they at least feel ashamed and devastated for what they have done.

haha, what... well, maybe, because i'm not saying yes or no here. But so out of context. What country was that "professor" from then? i'm sure Mr. Obama had more to think about than this old "revolutionary", from some banana republic most people don't even know the name of. you know, just because someone is professor, dosent mean the know everything about life and politics. often they are just a bi product of thier own counties political agenda, like anyone else. even more than others, because they are hired to spread certain opinions based on what kind of religion and country they live in, and that's more important to them than the actual events. That way they can keep thier jobs! Just about anyone can have just as much of knowledge an insightful opinions with good and valid points, not just old professors with grey hairs. That time has passed my friend. maybe it's better to listen to someone, and base your judgment not by what their title is, but who they are as a person. but in the best cases, you dont listen to others. make your own opinion, and by so, you're own view of reality. Based only from what you know and from what you have read, not from from anyone else. dont listen to me, your friends or you're president / prime minister / holy leader. Because that's just propaganda. education is propaganda, internet is propaganda. but life is not, as long as you see it from you own eyes that is.

It makes me so mad at how gullible Africans are. I am a Kenyan myself, and my fellow Kenyans are so corrupt, they allow the alshabaab in our borders. The people of Libya got so easily brain washed by the western countries, that they brutally murdered one of the best African leaders of all time. People easily believe what they are fed....the believe that presidents like Nelson Mandela were great people...so much has happened in our land, yet we hold no history story of our own....we read what biased b.s we get from the internet...if a great president is developing a country, then they are termed as dictators....lazy presidents are termed as good presidents

If people were to go back to their history books and read about why the U.S benefits from oil producing countries being in chaos all the time, they'd stop being as gullible. If they dared read about why the dollar currency stays strong every time, despite other countries like the pound or euro being worth more....it all comes back to oil....and the countries that produce it can never have peace....Nigeria....Libya...the middle east....it's all game of power....and if you dare interfere with how things are ran, then you become assassinated...in the name of "dictator president"...or "terrorist"....

I like how the world can think of Gaddafi only as a tyrant... He is an african revolutionar with a lot of interesting and new ideologies who will prevail at some time again in Libya, he is the reason for the Pan African ideology and the founding of the African Union, he increased the literacy percent, he wanted to create a currency for Africa which would have been in rivalry with the dolar, he convinced some african leaders on the panafrican ideology, he almost formed an United African Army, he supported Mandela in the apartheid struggle and don't even forget about his speeches for an example the one at the UN in 2008 or at the Arab League, where he predicted his death and gave a very smart speech

Gadhafi was a true leader and how mercilessly he was killed is still a shocker to this day. Back in those times, corrupt media propaganda from Democrats created a hoax in Libya to show them their leader, Gadhafi, is bad to take control of Libya. After Gadhafi, Libya will never be the same. Emilio Javier Wouldn’t be surprised if it was a double either one of Gaddafi’s or CIA. Arab leaders are known for using doubles and CIA ... well you know it yourself.

Derek Trotter he did more good than bad and Libya was thriving economy before the west attacked. Some say America will not allow any other Middle Eastern power other than Israel. Why else would they attack Libya, Iraq and now Iran. To fulfill the Zionist leaders dreams and of course they have their little puppets Saudi Arabia with them too

Gadhafi was a real leader. If you don't believe do you're research. He did things for the people what no other politician did. He really loved his people, not the money.
