I've always thought that this game, side scrolling innovations aside, was considered a black sheep of the Pac series. I'm glad to see it has its fans. I've had very few opportunities to play this game myself, only stumbled across the arcade cabinet once and the goal wasn't clear to my younger self. I love Pac-Man though, so maybe I need to give it a fresh look.
@GTV-Japan6 жыл бұрын
Yea, maybe because it was so different and then PacMania came next and kept things in the maze. But it’s good and the one on TG16 or Ps1 is worth a few plays even for casual fans.

Gaijillionaire At least the Famicom version lets you use “normal controls” (D-pad to move, buttons to jump) on Player 2’s controller! I guess it’s supposed to be like the other half of the arcade machine’s control panel.

Half the fun of this game was watching other people play it in the arcade and sharing tips with other people. The skill ceiling was pretty high as well so when you saw someone who really knew what they were doing it was amazing.

Konami would also have that same thing with 573, which is supposed to be Go- Na-Mi (San is actually 3 in Japanese), yet somehow it's supposed to sound like Konami. They used that as a high score in a few arcade games, Gradius III included.

Level 2 has one, same place as the one shown in the PC Engine version of this video, same results. Not only do flowers appear in hidden spots, but pushing certain objects makes colored balloons appear that you can collect for points.

Such a strange game. I remember the cartoon as a kid but only saw a few of the episodes and the music from the American cartoon is in a Japanese game. I saw this one a few times in the arcade, way back when, but passed it by as no one ever played it. When I first saw this game, which was late '80s for me (and late for this game), I remember thinking that Pacman was only good in a labyrinth. I finally played this one recently, but it's such an odd game.

I remember playing Pac-Land for the first time at a Six Flags I went to for my 8th birthday, which was also when I got my NES. I was so hyped, because it was a Mario-type game with Pac-Man, though I didn't know that Pac-Land came first at the time. I was hoping for an NES release, but that never came to be. Then, many years later, I played the Famicom version. All that childhood disappointment of never getting Pac-Land on NES melted away as I saw how bad it looked and played on the Famicom release. At least the TG16/PCE versions exist!
@GTV-Japan2 жыл бұрын
The tg16 one is the best!
@Bloodreign18 ай бұрын
That's because Namco released it far too early on the Famicom, before more advanced memory mappers would be used in games a few years later. I believe a 1990 release would've seen a far better looking game than the one that appeared when it did.

Gaijillionaire Pac-Man 2 wasn’t even a platformer (it was a point-and-click), and neither was Maze Madness. You can actually play Pac-Land on Famicom with normal controls (d-buttons to move, A or B to jump) using the second controller. Honestly IDK why they didn’t add a “GAME A/GAME B” selection instead to choose the controls, because at least then they wouldn’t have had to exclude a 2-player option. The TurboGrafx version fixed that by adding options for “Button control” (use buttons to walk) and “Lever Control” (use joystick to walk), but *still no 2-player mode!!!* 😬😠

The reason the Famicom version looks so terrible is that it was fit into the base 40K size cartridge. They didn't have enough memory for all the varied levels and enemies. Super Mario Bros 1 fits in the same size cartridge, but it's graphics are much less varied, with only 4 types of levels using only a small number of unique tiles each, and the main difference between worlds being palette swaps. Pac-Land just couldn't cut it. If it'd come out a year or two later, when cartridge bankswitching became popular, it could have been as good as the arcade.

Oh yeah I know. I had a friend over here who grew up in a place that he says is now known as Londonistan. But I’ll never visit there for sure. I do say Paccy because that’s what his wife called him in the cartoon show. It’s weird because he is Pac-Man in pac land and everything is pac something. That’s like if there was a world that have everything named after one person. Or like if there’s a person named earth or human or something. They also named her pepper because ms Pac-Man doesn’t really have a name either
