I'm with Gaijin here. Western audiences aren't going to know the differences between samurai in the 13th century and in the sengoku jidai, so of course it's not going to be completely historically acurate, or else the Mongols would have won (which they actually did) so the so called "critics" have no right to complain. I think the problem here is that these same "critics" are trying to view Ghost of Tsushima as some kind of historical documentory, when in reality, it's literally a Kurosawa film!

If I remember right, in Skyrim there is no intentional script for the foxes to take you to places. Instead they have a script to run away from the player in order to keep a certain distance based on some triangle grid, this grid gets tighter around places of importance and if you chase the foxes long enough they will end up in one these places. Or at least that is how I remember the explanation I saw in another youtube video months ago.

One thing I in particular noticed was during the quest for the armor where you fight 6 Ronin, during the 5 fights before the final head honcho Ronin, Jin does a VERY unique style of Chiburi. Chiburi is the thing you see all the time where the warrior swings their blade to the side to fling off the blood before sheathing the blade..in fact the one you see Jin use most often is called the "O-Chiburi" and is rather common to various schools of combat..however when he duels the 5 Ronin in the Six Blades of Kojiro quest, Jin uses what is called the "Katori-ryū Chiburi" and is pretty much (to my rather limited I admit, research) exclusive to the Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū. I beat that game 100% (aside from banners and crickets) and Jin NEVER uses that chiburi anywhere else in the entire game..it's actually so rare I only found out about it literally about a week or two before the game's release while I was looking for sword fight anime vids on a late night samurai binge...random vid about Chiburi popped up and I kinda went from there. While I haven't played every game or seen every film or anime in existence..this is one of the few games I've actually see it outside the school kata demonstration vids you can find.
@raziyatheseeker4 жыл бұрын
Ah! I'd wondered if there was a name for that "swing blade to side to remove blood" motion. And indeed, that's a great catch. I guess it's based on one of the oldest sword schools in Japanese martial arts? If so, it's an interesting touch that could be missed, especially if someone wasn't paying attention during those fights. Good eye and research!
@ShinKyuubi4 жыл бұрын
@@raziyatheseeker The school says it was founded in 1447 while some scholars believe it's actually 1480..the first Mongol invasion of Tsushima took place in 1274. So I don't think the school by name goes back to then..though remember the game itself uses the time and historical invasion to tell a story..Katana as we know them today didn't really exist like Jin's blade, he would have been using the more curved Tachi during that time..the Katana as we know it didn't start being produced until around 1392 according to Wikipedia. The fact in game we repel the mongol invasion in what seems to be short order when in fact the very first invasion crushed Tsushima and moved on to the mainland in under 2 weeks..the invasion began on the 2nd of November and moved on to Iki on the 13th after conquering Tsuhima..is a historical rewrite.

It's awesome to watch you go into detail with source material like this because you CAN go into detail, there's enough depth to the material to be able to do that. And honestly, I think there's a lot to be said about... what I guess we can call "purposeful stylistic inaccuracies." Yes, technically there are factual inaccuracies; but what IS accurate wouldn't "look right" to the intended audience. So a creator sacrifices facts for the sake of style (You described it as "cultural shorthand"). I think this is a perfectly valid choice as a creator, and made all the more admirable by the creator acknowledging it.

The complaints of historical inaccuracies reminds me of Kingdom Come and how they wanted to make a super realistic game or something, and at the end of the day, it was just a boring game not many people played or talked about. It has something that is more important that getting every exact detail down, that's the spirit. In order to have anything reimagined, it has to carry the spirit of what it's reimagining. That's true for historical fiction, and it's true for media in general.

I'm glad they managed to get so much perfectly right. Anachronistic, sure, but I don't really place "anachronisms" and "historical inaccuracy" on the same level (that's like getting irritated over the presence of a clock in Hamlet). It's only inaccuracies that are introduced to the detriment of the plot that seriously bug me, so even though I love how fun and beautiful the game is, I don't know if I'll get over the whole "poison" thing in that regard. I still remember a lot of the side stories and side quests fondly (especially everything regarding Yuriko and getting the Sakai clan armor, and Lady Masako, and slaughtering those damn dirty shrine-desecrators/fox-murderers), but the story itself taking its "genie out of the bottle" stance by the last act just kind of...well, poisoned the overall story for me. The other aspects of the story using an anachronistic understanding of bushido (Jin's strained relationship with his uncle, imprisonment, and falling out with the shogun) all at least have other justifications for why they occurred (the stuff you covered, disobeying a superior officer, being a potential insurrectionist, etc.), but seriously, NO ONE ELSE IN JAPAN KNEW WHAT *POISON* WAS? Including the Mongols WHO HAD ALREADY POISONED PEOPLE?

there were a lot of terms here that I'd heard before in passing, and had a basic understanding of, but never looked into in detail before, and it was cool getting more insight on that. after the section on armor, I'm curious if you've ever seen Kamen Rider Gaim. it's one of my favorites in the series, and there's probably a lot of info about the various armors used that you could shed light on. for example, what made me think of Gaim was you mentioned the Jinbaori, because that's part of the main character's first proper "upgrade" beyond just using alternate armors.

God, i love me the O-yoroi. Back in pathfinder i played an Onispawn tiefling fighter, essentially a Yakuza tough/monster turned swordswoman through a pseudo-knightly order taking her in. And in her prime, her three identifying features were her outright size/form, being a massive, red part-oni, her sword, an Odachi (because vaguely ronin-esque, and oversize weapons for oni are just perfect), and her modified O-yoroi (an actial armor type in the books). Modified only slightly to be less obstructive for travel. But still being massive, boxy, and GORGEOUS. And yes. She was trained in long blade, long bow, and while she didnt typically have one available, she could hold her own on horseback. (The order was a blend of pseudo samurai ideas, and the hwarang of ancient Korea). All that said, its given me a MASSIVE love for the boxy beauty that is the O-yoroi. And im always glad to see it come up

Well, the legends are great of the samurai and their code of honor that they followed, and the right way they did battle away from civilians in big open fields. If only that was true. Like the knights and their "civelry" it was followed when it was convient to follow. And since history is written by the victor and survivor as long as they won or survived, they could make it sound as dreamy and noble as possible. Especially since they were quite literally writing their own history. But the truth is the youtuber himself said it himself. The "unwritten" code of engagement for a samurai was just that "unwritten." Left to be interpreted in whatever way is bennifical to said lord or diamyo. Samurai attacked the enemy upon sight usally. The only time a sit down ever historically occurred was when either a certain lord or diaymo wanted to surrender, defect, or negotiate. The ideal of retainers, lords, etc. being loyal to the end is great, and all but hardly ever happened. As many lords would have their own men watched for signs of treachery, or bribes from the opposing side, etc. Becouse it happened so often and not just high up officially either entire company's have defected in the middle of battle before. Remember the movies where they would change the banner over then attack the side they were on? Yeah, that actually is historically accurate. As no one wants to be on the "sinking" ship. And sometimes they did it because the song "Oh, I just want to he king" started playing in their heads. And the ideal of gin being harrased becouse of his methods would never of happened. Number 1, he would be considered the ruling lord or dimamyo of the island, considering every other one is either dead, weak beyond belief, or captured. In fact, the whole thing of his uncle harassing him throughout for breaking these codes that really wasn't a hard rule in the first place would have probably just gotten him killed for placing that much disrespect on him. Not to mention, he really wouldn't be treated well after being retrieved. As Gin would find it very odd that his belly wasn't slit open and would want to know exactly what he told the enemy. And probably wouldn't buy into the "he got nothing out of me" response. In fact, a lot of times, it would have been more dangerous for you to have been retrieved by your side than it would have to stay with the enemy. Plus, Gin would not exactly be thrilled to give up his place as acting lord because some old man is back who lost to begin with. And the shogun would not care into he slightest how gin is doing it he would simply care that he is stopping the mongrols there and winning. He would be spinning all kinds of stories and legends about the brave "ghost." Which is a name that I'm actually starting to believe that he really is. He took an arrow to the spine. I don't care what kind of medicine she used he should at the very least be paralyzed for life. He was flung off a cliff after being beaten into exhaustion by the leader of the mongrols there. But appenerly on that beach, he found the power of immortality. He literally heals by phycing himself up on some shoalin monk type of mental training that appenerly gives him the powers of Deadpool. So yeah, I'm not expecting historical accuracy out of it, but I will correct inaccuracy stated on the video. Some may not like what I'm stating, but oftentimes, history is way less dreamy than it's portrayed because, thankfully, we can literally dig it up. And if you don't like it I'm sorry but you know what I'll say it, if so then why are you on the internet? Shouting at the top of your voice, let's all get along and agree on the internet, is like jumping off your roof, expecting to take flight. Cause I'm not going to lie. I felt like I spent 10 minutes on this video being told not to point out historical accuracies or inaccuracies from a channel that makes it living doing exactly that. The comments on here trying to get people not to I feel are more nasty than the comments that have people actually fighting. Passive aggression is still aggressive, folks. Sometimes, people get passionate about history, and most of us are on this channel because we are, it's ok. Sometimes, that passion turns to different views and debates, and arguments are made that's OK. Some of the most important finds in history started out with two people arguing. They don't need Mama dearest coming in to play peacekeeper. Especially when mama dearest is more toxic and aggressive than both groups combined. Disguised as trying to offer a helping hand. Siercly, there are more insults from the "mediators" of this than the sides arguing themselves. Why? Becouse he said the developers said they weren't going for historical accuracy? Yeah these are the same developers by the way who released bonus content with 15 minutes of them patting themselves on the back saying, "Look how accurate and amazing that looks everyone, there's not a samurai game like it here's our inspiration". Or what because the youtuber told them not to, I'm sorry, remind me again how he made his money? Right by teaching history, specifically history right and occasionally going over, said accuracy in video games, or was I the only one who saw the ninja one? To be honest, i spend my work days fixing cars, you know, physical labor, and many of them probably do just as difficult or worse, physical labor. If they want to spend their time going over the history and accuracy of something, let them. So excuse me Mr kettle over here with the other kettles, not really caring about what Mr. Pot is lecturing us about who spends his work days on editing. Is it difficult... Maybe, probably. It is clearly not breaking his back or working him too skin and bones. And before you get mad and go fat shaming fat shaming. Yeah, 90 percent of the world is starving to death. I do not care. Half these people are probably spending 60 hours and more at work. the other half are putting in 50 hours a week of studying and school to be taught three useful things. So if they want to spend their time yelling about the difference of this length of blade vs. that one, let them. I don't care if this is long. Someone needed to say it. Man, it was different back in the day. People did this crazy thing called minding their own business. You might want to try it it'll get you out of a lot of drama. Let them be them, and you be you. People are already suffering from mental exhaustion, overwork, depression ect suicide rates are through the roof. If they take a small bit of happiness over arguing the points of which blade or arrow or whatever is right vs. wrong then let them. Free speech is still a thing. Let them exercise it. Becous something tells me that if they are willing to argue at length over something like that, they are probably not having fun outside of this, so let them do them, and you do you, ok?

katana (刀) is a general term for Japanese-style single-edged swords. katana is a word that corresponds to dao (刀) in China and sword in the West. tachi (太刀) is written as thick (太)), katana (刀). Although tachi is long and thick, it is a kind of katana that can be used by cavalry because the center of gravity is at hand. Around the 12th century, uchigatana (打刀) was developed. uchigatana is written as strike(打) and gatana(刀). uchigatana is a type of katana made mainly for infantry warfare. It was developed from sasuga (刺刀) written as stab (刺) and katana (刀). This has nothing to do with Mongolia. Since these have different purposes, tachi was used even after uchigatana was created. Japan exported katana, naginata, and sulfur as a raw material for gunpowder during the Song dynasty (960-1279), and katana was very popular. The politician and poet Au Joeng Sau(欧陽脩) (1007-1072) has released a work called "Japanese katana Song" (日本刀歌). This is a poem praising katana and Japanese technology. The original text of a history book written by a Mongolian scholar says "倭刀極利"(Japanese katana is extremely sharp)," 刀製長極犀 (Katana is long and extremely sharp). After the war between Japan and Mongolia, katana's reputation increased, so Japan exports katana to Mongolia and the Yuan dynasty. There seems to be a community that wants to spread the false information that katana was invented after the 16th century. "Tachi (太刀) is not katana (刀)."Does not hold as a sentence. This is "miao dao (苗刀) is not dao (刀)," "Viking Sword is not a sword . "It is the same as saying.

so, this is gonna be a LONG comment. but up front, I believe that this game is based more on a blend and balance of Feudal japan, rather than just a specific period of time. and i feel this works out for the better. i'm only about into Act 2 of this game, but i am LOVING it! what i love about it is that the world feels grounded in reality, but has just enough mysticism that makes you feel as if the Kami and the world itself is alive! the way your wind rides at your back, guiding you. the way that the foxes and the birds guide you to new locations in the world. and my favorite part, the Mythic Tales. after every tale, you get some kind of armor or skill that was told about in a Myth, that you now weild. and the best part is that these abilities can FRIGHTEN your opponents! the game makes you feel as if you are more than just a man, you are a new walking, living myth that your enemies will fear. that's why i believe this was the best route to go for. not to mention all the different biomes of the seasons you go though. Again, it's a perfect blend of reality and myth that makes this game feel real. going any further with trying to be 100 accurate probably would have resulted in a game that's less fun overall in my eyes. Also, there's armor that's based off of Sly Cooper... and that's awesome considering what this game is. any more accurate and that easter egg would not work.

another point, this game was inspired by Kurosawa movies, and those are a lot less accurate that this was from what i understand.
